A good arguement for being a support main

Recently, I've been watching a bit more of streamers playing in diamond/masters to try and pick up some tips on how to further improve. I noticed something about their games that I don't really experience. I'm a support main so that role is never autofilled and because of that players on my team are often assigned to the roles they want. Watching streamers playing I noticed that almost every single game had 1-3 players in autofilled roles and would pick really bad champions into the role. Ezreal supports, Nasus jungles, Jax mids and other equally bad matches were a near constant. This was made doubly bad by those players being unfamiliar with the role and playing poorly often heavily feeding pre-10 minutes. Supports were never buying Sightstone and top laners were without TP. A Lux taking TP in mid against a Zed instead of exhaust or barrier. I could name the issues I saw watching streamers all day.

As a support main....this rarely rarely happens. I mean, people still get autofilled but often only 1 person is on my team. As a support main if I get a bad ADC I can play an extra protective support and make up for their mistakes and can get them fed. Most of my games has a top laner with TP and as the support main I always have my eye on vision so our team can make plays and know we will always have a Sightstone. I pick champions like Janna, Lulu, Zyra, and Taric instead of having champions like Warwick, J4, and Leblanc in the support role.

People don't hold positions hostage as I am already filling the role people "hate" even though its not that bad anymore. People that "hate" it normally pick things like Renekton, Pantheon, Ezreal and other non-support champions then try to carry after buying a Long Sword instead of a relic shield or some other gp10 item (wonder why they hate it). In general, as a support main everyone is pretty happy and in a better mood as they got roles the want. Carrying a game can be done from the support role, just learn wave management, how to roam, and communicate with your team and you can carry from support. Support is also a highly flexible role in that you can pick whatever your team needs to round out the team comp for later. It's also highly satisfying to make the big plays from support and although I might not get the kills or the credit we support mains can take pride in our own abilities and don't require approval from others to know if we did good or not.

In short, Be a support main to:

  • have less autofills
  • having happier teammates
  • improved odds of getting ADC fed
  • no holding position hostage
  • better champions in intended roles
  • Players being knowledgeable in roles
  • far far far less troll picks
  • better team comps
  • better self-confidence

Trundle Hey I'm a support. Only clubbems understands me.

Haha, I haven't really tried trundle support yet. i will admit...it looks a bit boring to play but I've seen it be really strong many times.

You also forgot to mention that you get to VS folks who are filled more frequently so your often at an advantage in lane.

StoryDuck1 votes

lol yep. Be a support main, you win more.

I really like this. As a bard support main it feels like your always do so much things that only you notice for the team

StoryDuck1 votes

Yeah, support does a lot more then people think it does. Even back in season 1-3 when support bought 99 wards they still had hidden impact that people just never notice bu support players do because they did it. Peeling is a word thrown out but rarely do people recognize when it happens and that's only the tip of the iceberg of things supports do that people take for granted.

You also have the benefit of

  • Having to depend on an ally in your lane somewhat

  • Rarely get credit

  • Toxic itemization meta

  • Less skill expressive champions (janna isn't as skill expressive as most lets be honest, but that doesn't reduce skill required)

  • Bigger exposure to toxicity

  • Stereotype of never being toxic

  • Stereotype of being challenger level otherwise you "suck"

  • Stereotype of Sightstone

Some negatives that were for some reason not included

Haha, actually most of these are what you experience if you don't main support. if you main support a lot of these issues vanish, at least from my perspective as a support main.

  • A good support can support multiple players and not just ADC effectively carrying a game, I've had many games where I have 90%+ kpr to everyone else's 50-60%. I feel like the carry in those games, I often get treated as such too as I had good presence on the map that others noticed. The entire game is getting to the point the team is dependent upon the ADC so that makes this role the second most important. Even if it wasn't an ADC meta its still a team game and you always need to be dependent on others to help you.

  • You're correct here but you can also learn self-confidence because of this. You learn you don't need others to validate your skills you just know you played well or unwell on your own.

  • As a support main, Ardent is strong yeah but other support items are just as strong when you understand how to use them. This is knowledge gained only through maining support and gaining that detailed knowledge through many games.

  • The Janna hype train is fake. Good support mains know how to exploit her weaknesses and how to play around her strengths. However, as so many people are continuously force into the roll without that knowledge she is really strong. They can also easily pick her up and play well by just...not feeding as she is really easy to learn. A support main does more then just shield and R with her too as they understand the complexity of options she has beyond those. I'll gladly play against Janna anytime, I honestly find her easy to punish.

  • If you autofill support....believe me the ADC is gonna flame you. This is because the bot lane is twice as complex as any other lane and it's twice as easy to make a mistake. Support mains have learned this really complicated role and all the unique matchups that can happen. Supports are played in a role that is vastly more risky then any other due to level discrepancy and gold discrepancy.

  • as above

  • sightstone just good buy no matter what as a support. If you place good vision you can single-handedly win the game for your team.

This only proves my point, what I just said is EXACTLY what they will experience when they start trying to main support.

StoryDuck1 votes

Huh? but if you learn it you don't have those problems....umm...your statement is a paradox and cannot exist lol.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

"when they start trying to main support" as in it will happen until they get used to it/ learn to prevent it. Where is the paradox?

"when they start trying to main support" as in it will happen until they learn it.

you dont "start tring to learn support" in ranked games

you learn in normals

i mean yeah everyone who starts support thinks stupid shit like
"IMA go item 3100 item 3124 Blitzcrank " and start's ksing thier adc and is like "but it works i saw it on mobafire" ( i use THIS as an example... because that was ME "supporting" in season 3)

or some shit like any role it takes a while to learn. not only learning the champsion but the role, when to back... how to determine when you can go is isnt just a matter or "we can kill this champ if i land my Q" but... any DECENT adc and kill this champ if i land my Q.. but can the adc i CURRENTLY HAVE kill him.

you need to be able to read your adc's skill level at the role very fast. otherwise you make make the proper play.. but end up dying for it becuase your adc cant follow up.

you also.. and this is the HARDEST PART of being a support.. is to KNOW when to let your teammate die. you CANNOT save everyone. sometimes if they do stupid shit you just need to let them die and make it so the enemy only gets the ONE kill off it of and not more..

THIS IS BY FAR THE HARDEST PART!!! and even with YEARS of playing support as a secondary role. i still sometimes end up getting myself killed (and others) becuase i tried to save someone i knew was dead.

at the same time.. this is another reason why it is important to recognize skill level... becuase if Gosu is your adc.. and he could have gotten a penta if u didnt leave him out to dry... then its on you. you need to be able to quickly recognize the skill level of your teammates on the champs they have. and make that split second decision whether they can or can't be saved. and that is what TRULY separates a great support from a decent one.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

I am not sure what you are trying to prove, as far as I know you have 3 points

  1. It sucks at the start of maining support for the person starting to main support

  2. Great supports and decent supports have huge differences

  3. No one starts learning support in ranked, or atleast no one should

NONE of these things relate to what I said. What the flip? I said that it sucks when you start maining support. You seem to support that then yeah, you go on whatever you just said.

StoryDuck1 votes

It's an argument paradox. Your argument is that everything is awful. My argument is it makes everything better. Your statement directly confronts with mine saying its awful to play support. Mine is a statement that learning support makes the problems go away. Technically both of us are correct, you for saying learning at first will be terrible, and me for saying once you learn a bit it gets better. There isn't any way to continue a debate because one is focused on only the instant and the other is focused on the later. In essence, you are trying to combine the present with the future. If the future argues in the past then it creates a paradox. We all know that time is a wibbly wobbly timey whimey thing so no need to complicate it.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

That's not my argument at all. Quote where I said "everything is awful" or something hinting towards that. You probably wont, considering you said right after "It's awful to play support" so you sorta made it so I had 2 arguments.

  1. It sucks to START playing support not sucks to play support in general

  2. you said it yourself

actually most of these are what you experience if you don't main support

So by your OWN statement, it will suck until you learn support entirely and/or learn how to prevent said problems. I went by that because you don't instantly main support when you start trying to main support. Sure my comment applies for all beginnners. However, that is somewhat invalid in itself, because NONE of the stereotypes exist only when you start support. It exists for all supports. So good job, I have no idea where the paradox is, because what was the POINT of arguing with me THEN? Clearly you said that we were both correct, so what are you even trying to prove?

StoryDuck1 votes

Learn to not take things so seriously. You're getting hung up on a couple words. Words just used to build up a punchline to reference Dr Who. I'd try to explain the paradox thing but I don't think you can handle it as you seem WAY too invested in just proving me wrong. If you hate support so much then just keep playing Yasuo. Not everyone can handle learning a new role and I don't expect everyone to jump on the support band wagon either. Everyone plays for different reasons and sometime that reason is to just get a good KDA, nothing wrong with that either, just have fun and play your way.

Yaśuo Main1 votes

Alright so me legitimately arguing is me taking it too far after I prove that I said none of the things you said I stated, and this "paradox" thing exists for whatever reason. Again, If we're both correct, what are you trying to prove? You said that "none of those things happen when you learn support" and there's only 2 things that would mean, until you are good at support those things never happen (minus the stereotypes, those always happen regardless) or they never happen. One of those things are obviously flat out wrong (they never happen is obviously wrong) and then you go on this random tangent about "taking things too seriously" when you flat out started the entire thing. That's like punching a guy in the face and when he pulls out a gun, you start saying "it was just a prank bro". What the hell dude? If you're gonna make an empty excuse about it being "too serious" then don't try to argue with anyone in general, ESPECIALLY if you have NO REASON to do that If we are BOTH RIGHT. You claimed I stated 2 things I never said and when you hit that point, you have no excuse AT ALL.

StoryDuck1 votes

Lol, still fixated on making me the one in the wrong eh? I find it entertaining how invested in this you are. No compromise, no humor just I'm right your wrong rhetoric (yes I know you didn't use those words but what you type can be interpreted that way). Well, I don't really care enough and I'm not going to argue with you. I just wanted to recruit more support mains and try to improve the image of the role a bit to do so. No idea why you fight so hard to put down supports and argue to try to make people hate the role. I'll just put it up to post-traumatic autofill syndrome.

Athenes Lulu1 votes

You should add that people will be more likely to listen to your shotcalling, and that a good support can herd his team to victory even if they CAN be bad.

The autofill system is bullshit, I have been autofilled to mid before, it doesnH make sense.
