Could I get punished for this?

I like to play off-meta sometimes. A lot of the time I'll explain myself, but a lot of the time it's just exhausting getting yelled at AGAIN for my pick, and I just ignore them and lock in. Can I get punished for not communicating in this circumstance?

To my knowledge, as long as you are playing to win, you cannot & will not be punished.

What do you mean by "off meta" ? Are we talking about Master Yi Support?

If so - you should be punished.

In this particular case I'm talking about Ashe support

I think the more important consideration is "are you respecting your fellow players". If your Jungle decided to go Sona JG would you feel your JG had a chance to make meaningful impact? Probably not. Picking Ashe support is the exact same thing. You wont be of use because you wont have enough gold to properly gear.

Not entirely true. You're approaching it from a standpoint of "how Ashe plays", which is what many do. If one looks outside the context of precedent, it's apparent Ashe has a ton of utility. A reliable slow, on-demand vision at any range, solid poke for the early game, zoning for later, and a nasty stun for an ult? Sounds like a support to me. Honestly, I've had better games with Support Ashe than I have ADC Ashe.

If you give it your all and you’re not toxic, you can take any champ you want in any role, even if it’s Soraka jungle in ranked promos.

I do this all the time and I've never been punished. It's tough playing off-meta, everyone's always got a reason to complain about it. Generally you're not gonna convince anyone no matter how sound your reasoning is (though there are exceptions). If people start trashing me I full mute at the start of the game and just do what I know works. Chances are they won't even care if you win at the end, anyway.
