I would like to point out that the tutorial still...

Mira Arya Enthe··142 votes·8,019 views

...has Ashe building item 3075 as her first item.

When is this thing getting updated? It doesn't even talk about proper ward placement, the various roles, jungling. How about stop making wacky new imbalanced items for a few weeks, and update the tutorial. Should be a 7 part thing for new players.

Tutorial 1: The basics Don't Buy Thornmail on Ashe (Unlocks Sejauni for Free) 2: Playing Support Ward Mule (Unlocks Soraka for Free) 3: Playing Bottom How to Whine 101 (Unlocks Ashe for Free) 4: Playing Middle Anime Protagonist Wannabe (Unlocks Annie for Free) 5: Playing Jungle AFK farm till 20 (Unlocks Warwick for Free) 6: Playing Top Castaway Simulator (Unlocks Garen for Free) 7: Advanced Tactics and Objectives Surviving Toxic Players (Unlocks a free skin for the above Champions)

"Why no Assassin or Skirmisher?" Not a good idea to give new players kits that are so feast or famine when they don't understand the game. All the kits above are more reliable and easy to use. Almost all Skirmishers and Assassins are pretty feast or famine. This setup will give them a Tank, a Support, a Marksman, a Mage, a Fighter and a Juggernaut. And it will teach them how to use them in their respective roles.

Heck, maybe we should make any player Gold or lower go through all 7 as well. Including myself. Maybe we'd see less 20CS by 30 minutes, less supports calling wards 'pointless', more mids understanding that roaming is important, fewer junglers invading Lee Sin at level 2, and top laners... still being on an island.

Do you agree updating the tutorial to better inform and introduce new players to the game is an important goal?

I agree, but make the jg champ MasterYi instead of Warwick , ever since his rework he's become a lot harder to play mechanically.

Mira Arya Enthe23 votes

Warwick has a much higher skillcap now, that said he is still really easy to pick up initially and is meant to be the noob jungler. His Q needs some work, but other than that he is doing his job well. He also has healthy gameplay and is actually fun. Yi is in bad shape for both balance and design. This is why I picked Warwick.

3TWarrior7 votes

I thought NewNew was the easy to pick up jungler?

Nunu

Malicious Metal11 votes

Nope.

He's simple mechanically but winning as Nunu means having great macro play.

Velzard of Koz10 votes

"Great macro play" certainly sounds better than "Be unbearable pain in ass for enemy jungler, make him afk and destroy the remaining moral of the rest of enemies by catching them in spot bad for you, laughing to provocate them and then make them waste time running around, spamming laugh, trolling, because no player ever picked Nunu to take the game seriously, but to just annoy the fuck out of everything in their path".

RocketRelm4 votes

Actually no, the second phrasing of it sounds way better, if the metric is "how much does this make me want to play X?".

3TWarrior2 votes

I mainly made this comment because unless your opponent is simply an outstanding duelist and gets lucky, nunu will not die in the jungle as compared to the 90% of other champions that can and will die in the jungle

Danjeng7 votes

Warwick is still fairly straight forward, and I would recommend him to any new players trying to learn how to jungle. He is more complex than before, but that's not saying much since before Warwick had the gameplay depth equivalent of a Murk Wolf.

SpaghettiVase3 votes

i think the problem with warwick is more of an issue with the clunkiness of his Q and Ult. He's very basic to learn and good to learn jg with but until he's smoothed out I can see why people would struggle with him.

Golden Tager X3 votes

Yi has a winrate curve comparable to Yasuo. Warwick is there because the sustain makes it easier to do.

SzGamer2275 votes

Yi is horribly feast or famine as a champ. You go in and either kill everything for the rest of the game or feed all game. I agree with the OP, you shouldn't give that kind of champion to new players.

how dare you!

"2: Playing Support Ward Mule (Unlocks Soraka for Free)"

soraka true glory comes from the solo lane, where she harasses with q and doesn't learn w until lvl 13!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and for the ashe tutorial they should have you buy gunblade and sunfire cape with the thornmail :)

This is......a great idea actually i sincerely approve, it's been bothering me for a while that new players get stifled by the lack of introduction to the game and the amount of trolls and smurfs in the lower lvls and elos. A solid intro guide would solve a lot of this actually.

I would upvote twice but i only have this one account because i despise the idea of smurfing :´(

It'd be nice if they could somehow make the New Player Guide accessible from the client.

LordSirChipmunk1 votes

Recall that the New Player Guide has a link on the home page of the website, and you need to go to the website to download the game. I like the way you think, but most players will have seen at least a link to the guide before they download.

By the time I downloaded the game, I had already figured out that I would become an Ahri main, and I knew pretty much the gist of how games were played, just from that guide. :)

Bruh, there's more than one tutorial. That one is specifically the battle tutorial, IIRC.

Can you please acknowledge that? I get this feeling that people post about the battle tutorial to farm upvotes when at least the "actual" SR tutorial teaches you the basics of the game to get started. A few of your points are just, well, metagaming.

The tutorial does its job. The rest is up to the player to learn later. Perhaps another tutorial should be added and unlocked at level 10 for jungling, but we can't overburden new players with too much info at once. This game is fucking confusing when you start out and try to take too much information in.

DrCyanide1 votes

While there are two parts of the tutorial, the first one is so bad and so slow that most people never touch part 2. They could honestly drop the first tutorial all together, add 5 sentences to the second, and have a better experience overall.

You dramatically overestimate new players, the first tutorial is 100% necessary at teaching people the basic control scheme of the game.

DrCyanide1 votes

The control scheme that's nearly identical to almost every RTS control scheme?

I knew how to control the character the instant I stepped into the tutorial because everything was exactly the same as StarCraft (and Age of Empires, as I recall). It's not like the idea of right click on ground to move, right click on targets to attack them is so complicated it requires the 2 minutes it takes to complete that part of the tutorial. As I recall StarCraft 2 covers selecting your units, moving, and attacking in a fraction of the time League takes to explain 2/3 of those concepts, while also giving you story at the same time. There's no reason that 30 seconds couldn't be taken at the start of the second tutorial to explain the essential concepts of the first, rather than making a 5 minute tutorial that covers very little and isn't engaging.

I think a role model tutorial is Overwatch's tutorial. Yeah, they technically cover the basic controls of the FPS genre (move the mouse to look, WASD to move), but they do it so quickly that you're not bored out of your skull by the time the tutorial is over. Then there's a bit more time dedicated to what's unique to Overwatch itself (hero abilities) then they set you loose.

Quepha5 votes

{quoted}

The control scheme that's nearly identical to almost every RTS control scheme?

Yes. The control scheme that's nearly identical to a genre of games THAT SOME PLAYERS HAVE NEVER TOUCHED IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE.

Do you realize that? For some people, League of Legends is their first RTS game ever and the tutorial we are talking about is only recommended if the owner of the account indicated thusly. And the RTS-style control scheme was created to control multiple units and maps weirdly to controlling a single unit.

Dota-like games have a ton of unintuitive mechanics that are completely necessary to understand compared to other RTS's where they make more sense. The idea of a 'lane' with 'creeps' running down it to take 'towers' is all very bizarre.

DrCyanide3 votes

Yes. The control scheme that's nearly identical to a genre of games THAT SOME PLAYERS HAVE NEVER TOUCHED IN THEIR ENTIRE LIFE.

That's no different from Overwatch, yet they manage to strike the balance I'm talking about.

You're acting like I'm saying there doesn't need to be a tutorial. That's not what I'm saying at all!

I'm saying the current tutorial could be made better for all gamers, from complete noobs to people familiar with RTS style controls. Part of that improvement is letting players try things out, rather than locking down everything and forcing the player to sit through 30 seconds of dialog/cutscenes before they do anything.

This independence is something the second tutorial nails compared to the first tutorial. I think that the mechanics that need to be covered in the first tutorial could be moved into a similar format as the second tutorial, if not into the second tutorial all together.

Riot: Stopped reading at 'Unlocks Sejuani for free'

50000000000000003 votes

I don't know about Sejuani, since it looks like all the free champions are 450 tier. Amumu, maybe? He's also an easy to pick up jungler that's strong in lower levels of play.

For reference, the list of 450 IP champions are: Amumu, Annie, Ashe, Garen, Kayle, Master Yi, Nunu, Poppy, Ryze, Singed, Sivir, Soraka, and Warwick. In your current list, Amumu, Kayle, Master Yi, Nunu, Poppy, Ryze, Singed, and Sivir are not included. I think Amumu is a good pick here for aforementioned reason, but maybe Master Yi, Poppy, and Sivir are good choices too, since they have fairly simple mechanics.

Kayle, Nunu, and Singed plays fairly differently from most champions, so I wouldn't recommend these, and I wouldn't recommend Ryze for his high skill floor.

All in all, I like how you arranged these tutorials.

the entire purpose of the tutorial having Ashe buy Thornmail is to actually have it end at some point since the entire point of that tutorial is to get you used to the controls of the game. The actual game tutorial as far as i can remember does not have you buy thornmail if you play as ashe

Just enforcing the tank meta from the get-go.

SpaghettiVase2 votes

Honestly a good idea. I've personally only been playing league for a few months and even after the tutorial I was still going in blind. The tutorial didn't teach me anything that wasn't already taught by any other 3rd person PC game. Battle Training is really useless aside from teaching you about lanes, roles, and turrets which still doesn't actually help you in areas like item building, character roles, and actual fighting tactics. Battle training also always has the same team make up Master Yi and Yourself Top Vs Malphite and Sivir Soraka Mid Vs Nasus Shen and Sivir bot Vs Annie and Master Yi

Whammer2 votes

The reason behind this is so that literally the game can play itself. If you were to purchase a damage item, the player would risk dying as they would have to kite the minions and the trundle, in order to not be killed by them. But with thornmail, you can just stand there and the gane can play itself automatically autoattacking for you and there is 0% chance you die.

x R U K A x1 votes

I agree, I main support now but I didn't know I wasn't suppose to take cs and that I have to ward until I was like level 28, there's a lot about the game that it doesn't teach you in the tutorial mode. I feel like this is also a reason why not many people play support but that's for another forum post.

3TWarrior2 votes

oh, then there's the fun fact that there is no jungler practice in bot matches.

It's essentially a top lane that no one can win until at least level 6 or play a lane-bully champ

riot hasn't even looked at these things since they were first released

even the links to the free champs and skins are hard to find now

So true. One of the earlier times I did pvp, I had literally not heard of jungling and was given the role.

Cue getting executed by gromps and no ganks whatsoever. Riperoni.

Sexy Jack Rabbit1 votes

To be honest I think they would better off gifting you Sona for Free. She's even simpler, and Machine-gun soraka isn't common knowledge. But it's understandable as Soraka is another 450 champion.

I think it'd smart for Riot to give out a champion of each class like you've listed. A little tidbit though is that due to how buggy Tibbers is, Annie is not even included in the free champions you get up until level 10 anymore.

Instead you get Lux, who in my opinion is actually MORE noob friendly then Annie. As she's safer in lane and isn't match-up dependent.

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

Actually lux can get countered hard, and unlike Annie there is skill expression with Lux.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

Yes.

However you must admit that Riot had an agenda.

They have been trying to drill into players' heads from the beginning that you can build defensively on ADCs. :^)

The Ecdysiast1 votes

At the moment you can't build defensively on anyone unless it's 6 thornmails on rammus. And even then the enemy shreds through 3 of them with two items.

TyrekGoldenspear3 votes

But think of it this way,

If everyone builds defensively, then there will be no shredding through anyone.

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

The Ecdysiast1 votes

That's just the converse of the current: if everyone builds armor shred, no one is buying armor.

I still think the tank update is going to come with heaps of %Damage Reduction on kits and in items to counter armor penetration, as opposed to the fair option of actually fixing/reverting the current penetration items.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Building defensive on ADCs has never been viable in soloQ. In proplay there use to be designs with say the old Ashe like building 3 offensive items, 2 defensive items plus boots. But these were always the same two defensive items, BV and GA.

The problem is normal crit dps ADCs are only viable if they scale, just look at how bad they are doing right now because they aren't given the time to scale.

That said you are probably making a joke, but because I am analytical and dense I probably took this long to realize it.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

I in fact was making a joke, but you probably get to have a few moments of analytical density.

After all, the good folks over at Gameplay know I get more than my fair share of dense moments. It's just that unlike you I don't have the analytic excuse. :^)

I haven't been checking the boards much lately and didn't bother to see what the one message was til now.. my bad.. The tristana skin you can get by liking the League of Legends facebook (There is a link on the page about it), alistar used to be by subscribing to their youtube channel, but the link is broken so you now have to just send in a support case mentioning "Unchained Alistar" and the system should give you the skin and champ within about a day or two. And the last one that I know about is for garen and you have to go to their twitter page and there will be a link on the side, I think, about it. I got tristana, alistar, and garen's skins during the fall last year so they should still work as of today. The skins are Unchained alistar, Dreadknight Garen, and Riot girl Tristana, and it will give you the champs as well if you do not already own them.
