I've now had 5 brand new players in provisionals as my support in a row

can we please stop assuming brand new players belong in the top 50% of ranked..? why would a brand new player be able to win in silver? you're literally just making a horrible experience for people in silver and low gold...and unfortunately i'm low gold right now and have to deal with this shit constantly...

this shit?

If they're in your game then they're around your level.

they most certainly are not, i finished my provisionals and went 7/3 and placed G5, putting a completely brand new player on their first account in my games on their provisionals is a horrible idea, they have not had time to learn the game yet, and they often feel bad about the game as they didn't ask to be put somewhere that the average player takes 6 - 12 months to make it to and that most never escape from

it's a terrible experience for everyone, brand new accounts should start at the bottom and if they're winning games, move up incrementally, not start at the middle and move up or down, i.e start at bronze 5 0 MMR, if you win game one, move up to b4 or b3, etc, with a maximum possible of P5 still, that would IMO place people closer to where they belong starting out. I should not be getting brand new players in gold, that is absolutely insane.

Im not 100% sure but isn't the winning team receiving as much elo (elo still is taken into account for the mmr-value) as the enemies team looses? if this is the case, riot actually designed the average elo since the average elo will always be the value that they give to new ranked players.

its not that surprising that their starting mmr will be around the 50%-mark of ranked players. that means if you lower the starting elo you will lower the average elo and by that you will lower the average rank over time.

as long as riot uses some kind of elo-system, they can't get rid of this (they're actually trying by new players receiving and losing way more elo in the first ranked games)

only way to get rid of this is giving smurf accounts a higher starting elo whily giving real amateurs a lower value, but i guess it's pretty hard to have such a good smurf detection just from normal games.

i don't think so, if you're smurfing and your mmr is really high you'll sometimes get 30+ LP, no one is losing that much generally. it's not exactly balanced, and Riot didn't create the average so much as the players do by not practicing, not doing what is needed to improve, and generally all ending up at the average skill level of play

which takes most people at least 6-12 months to be able to do with very few outliers who transcend this skill level naturally, without as much practice and make it to gold or higher within their first year.

you have to do a lot of self analysis, understanding your mistakes and constantly working to not make them in the future, that is square one, you have to have a flawless attitude, you cannot tilt or tilt your team, and you need to go further than that as to encourage your team, you have to learn map awareness, some people have set timers to ding every few seconds to remember to look at it, and turn it off when they find themselves doing it right before the ding naturally, people have to work on mechanics, all of these things are needed and won't come by just doing the same thing over and over again except in extreme cases of playing all day every day where it just has to come eventually, but even then you'll never get out of mid to low gold without actually analyzing your play and fixing errors. The game is in a state of punishment right now, not reward, meaning mistakes lose games more than good play wins them.

They didnt create the average level of play but the average elo. That means if you as a player are somewhere around the 50% of the best mark, you will most likely be somewhere at the default elo. Even if now all players become better and play 1 entire tier better than before, their elo wouldnt change since it only takes your position compared to all other ranked players into account. I suggest reading something about the chess elo system, because it gives some insight in elo-systems in general if something isnt clear since i can't describe this stuff very well.

High lp gains on smurfs are mostly due to the first 50 ranked games giving more elo than usual + higher elo gains for streaks, so if you win 10 games or so in a row you will get so much elo that your rank is very far behind. This is possible for lower tier players in the way of loosing 10 games in a row aswell, but there are 2 reasons you don't really see lp losses that high:

  1. the difference between let's say b4 and the average player is far less than the difference between high elo and the average player, so even the worst players still might win some games after playing placements and not having such extreme streaks
  2. placements itself, if you're a bronze 3 player, you might end up somewhere around silver 5, bronze 4 or something around that after your placement matches, so you're already pretty close to your rank and dont loose much lp. If you're a diamond 2 player, you might win 9/10 games or sth and might end up somewhere around gold 1. Now you're nearly 2 entire tiers below your actual rank and will most likely see really high lp gains.

I agree with your last paragraph, but there's nothing changing the default elo could do against this.

Silver 2 Support main, getting placed in gold games with Plat players recently. ...feels like a lot. This is because there's just not enough support players. The system is just grabbing who they can and throwing them into a match. You think it's bad for you? Try playing a game at high gold\low Plat as a silver and trying not to feed. I know the system doesn't 'punish' you as hard for losing games above your weight class but you can see the MMR and your teammates can range anywhere from bronze to Plat at this point so you can't tell from that either. Yeah its cool I can learn from these guys but if I'm gonna get slammed at this level I would like to actually have that rank too.

Having to queue ranked before a certain elo and getting the greenhorns that probably have no business there, is like trying to bowl with someone that says they are really good at bowling and watch them gutter ball for the entire game.

its not about assuming brand is good or bad supp, those ppl just dont play supp nad prolly are there as fill so they pick whatever champion they can, or prefer to play and still can work as support
