The Direction LoL is going in and why it is Bad

Eternal Torment··10 votes·3,519 views

Since this will be a very long post, It feels appropriate to mention there will be a TL:DR at the bottom for anyone uninterested in the long version

#Introduction to the reasoning

I only came back to LoL a few days ago, and spend most of my time catching up on everything occuring the last 3 months. Changes in the game, in the Community, in everything regarding lol, really. And i see more and more people are complaining than anything else. I took my time to thoroughly study the contents of the Boards to get myself a rough Picture of just what is going on and why it is bad.

I will write both a subjective, neutral context aswell as personal banter to this, so you can skip the respective one part and go to the other.

#What is happening?

First of all, to those who don't really seem to be catching all the changes that have been happening, i took my time to make a rough summarization of what is going on to begin with. So...

  • Balance changes are more Grave

Yes, this game and it's Content, champions items and skills, are still balanced, However, it does not enjoy the stability of a lasting balance. The Thread holding the Balance is growing thinner and thinner, and the trips said balance suffers get worse every patch. Reason for such is mostly one Thing: Fluent endless increase of Maternal Content.

League of legends is growing So rapidly and widely with what it can offer that it Fails to catch up with the full potential and misses the Brakes to it's Limits. There is so much content out there and so many changes, buffs, nerfs, Hotfixes, reworks and Mini-adaptations to champions that it starts to overshadow the main Principle of what Balance is meant to be. There are at least 3 champions currently who are so underused and underrecognized that the community is in uproar about it. Volibear has officially replaced Aatrox in the shitterseat. Noone picks him because every champion of similar role and/or design can do everything he can, but Better. The fact alone that such an occurance with a champion has Repeated within 365 days only goes to show how deep the sea has become compared to how thin the ice covering it is growing to be.

  • More focus on Merchandise

This is something that last month blew all gaming news for every Party, not just Riot. The source-Implementation of Lootchests for literally no free availability. Riot has developed most focus in all These new fancy Packs in the Loot, those awesome new rolls and chances for rare skins you can't even buy normally that it has completely neglected the Free 2 Play part of League's Collection-basis.

The New honor system rewards you with so Little chances for Keys to open chests that you might aswell just screw it. Skins used to be available to free 2 Play-Players a lot more fairly. Big parts of the uproar come that Riot jumped the Trend and joined in on a scandal that has not hurt their Reputation solely because there were worse examples to give. But that brings the question, How long until Riot is on the shooting board?

  • Focus Redirected to competitive Scene

This one is something that was always present, but not nearly as threatening or extreme as it is today. Competitive Scene is taking such high impact on the game that Lower Level Scenes are partially, if not entirely neglected. Every Champion balance, every change, every demand for an update in the recent times regarding the game in itself happened because of the Top Dogs of the ranking letter ALONE

More and more people are personally dissatisfied because the feel of Neglect to the community is growing stronger to each individual Player. It was even addressed just about an hour ago in another Post, Riot used to be a LOT more engaged with the Boards community and reddit. These days however they only show up out of 2 reasons. Defense or offense.

It speaks loud tones when the C&C corner is the only one in the ENTIRE board where you can still share casual chats with rioters in a Post. As much as i might be wrong on this one, the more i spend time on the boards the more it feels like Board Moderation was only created so rioters can take more and more distance from said boards and let others do their work.

On one hand it is good, more opportunities to meet other new nice people.

However, downside is that it gives off the impression of Lazyness. That others are doing their dirty work because they do not wish to.

Communication between developers and Clients, which in this case means the gamer-basis, has become a ruin of what it once was.

  • League Mutating into an Different game

One of the worst issues currently hitting LoL is the way it is evolving as a Game.

The Status of league is mostly now known as extremely fast-paced and "Snowbally", AKA profitable to the aggressive. League of legends, unlike most other MOBA games, possessed in their Years up until Season 7 an Longer period of Time people invested in a single game. Problem is, as addressed earlier, League is moving more and more towards competitive Scene only, which means Longer games are More boring. To up the Profitability by presenting a more attentionworthy speed-driven action-based Entertainment was the measure of Movement they took to change what made Watching competitive boring after 6 stable Seasons.

League of legends, however, creates a very definitive Cliff of contradictory between it's Purposed development and it's newly enforced one. League of Legends is not meant to be fast paced, not meant to be so aggressive. The Development-direction is becoming more one-dimensional and even somewhat predictable, as many of the "leaks" that came regarding balance changes were, if not PBE data, pure guesses, and they still tendencially hit a mark.

It is one Thing to create a negative dinamic, another when it is predictable to happen. The one change people noticed the most was in the new client, the first Thing that was removed when it came live was the Tooltip that gives the expected duration for a game. From then on it was already hinted that league would go down a path where games go either slower or faster, in this case, faster.

And that is in many ways worse than it is better, as listed.

#What does it mean for the Game?

  1. Well, for starters it means one Thing: People do not want so many changes.

League of legends is too fluid and adaptive, there are more and more corrections to the balance every single patch. Just one year ago it was big news if a single patch released more than 8 changes, These days it is common Knowledge that a single patch holds, get this, between 12-16 changes.

16 CHANGES EVERY 2 WEEKS.

What league has lost is it's capability to give Players an Endurable form of Joy. Everything a Player picks up is temporary, so much that most people who quit a game actually do so because they are, thanks to the recent developments, incapable of one-tricking a champion. Being good at one pick has become self-destructive to anyone's personal experience for the game.

Such is only more notable when you look up newer recent guides and, instead of a champion, the guides actually suggest the lanes as a whole. with at least 5 picks to do whenever you can, and 5 picks to avoid as good as possible.

  1. The Marketing-heavy Development is dangerous to all involved.

More focus on Merchandising Lootcrates and Promoting paid competitive Scene are practically shouting for a scandal to occur that would shatter the playerbase to it's seemingly indestructible core. Yes, League of legends is still a free 2 Play game in itself, but anyone who wants a chance at collectibles or to be even remotely recognized for their skills Needs to give out the money to do so. Hell, LoL competitive players and streamers even get Sponsors which are then directed to Riot to promote their Worlds Tournaments and the Continental Ranking Finales for Teams.

Thought a slow process, league is really turning into a fully fledged Marketing Logo. Riot games is a Gamesdeveloper, not a new brand of T-shirt creators. That they try to create a Growth-market through promotion and Sponsored Championships at the expense of anything that is not part of These two Things is very damaging, ecspecially if left untouched for Extended periods of time.

  1. Development further, thought indirectly, promotes Verbally violent behaviour amongs Players.

This is the arguably most stupid point in this list, but read me out to the end. That LoL is growing more fast paced means that the game requires you to make the same decisions you usually do, but faster. Less and less Windows are open for Joy alone to be felt, and such creates a dynamic Charge of stress and frustration. People who cannot enjoy fun with peace are very commonly easy to stress, and that double-edged sword of Efficiency and joy mixed together is more and more occuring within this Game's Community.

It is already a trend to say "LoL is not for fun, it is for salt" because of how popular disrespectful behaviour is due to the exposure of quick series of stress over repeaded, decisive failures within the game. League has, aside from all the other complains listed, most comparably evolved into an distant cousin of the Phone-game "Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War"

In what sense do the worlds biggest PC game of 2017 and a meager RTS Mobile game share a similarity?

Well.....fun is only presented to bullies. The only way to have fun in such a fast paced game is to ruin it for others entirely. League of Legends possesses no more spaces for the experience itself. The very first minutes already decided the entire Outcome and the only way to end it faster is basically by surrendering yourself to the Opponent and just let them do. Be as it may that this game is a Game based on fighting where there can be only one winner, it should be mandatory that both sides possess equal chance in victory. That is one more Thing this game has sacrificed for it's recent growth. Fairness to people's Joy.

#What does it mean to me?

At this part Comes Personal opinion into Game.

What it means for me is one Thing: I Need to give up everything i learned so far in order to learn all the new Things in this game.

I have to give up my current mains in order to Progress, and i Need to learn something that feels wrong for this game, which is teamplay without communication. I cannot for the love of me risk to talk to anyone because i might at any moment be insulted on a personal Level which once already made me quit for months by giving me a breakdown as my parting gift. I cannot share verbal communication out of the anxiety that i will be told/reminded that i am a worthless pile of shit incapable of winning a bronze Level game. (Jokes on me because i am not bronze)

And it hurts. I may have not been playing for that long compared to a lot others, i am only here since early 2015, but for me to look back and say "how Things are today make me regret having started at all" is unreasonably hurtful to think of.

I have learned to not talk to people who are toxic, maybe meme their attitude once but that is it, but that "not talking to whoever is toxic" has become a synonymous sentence to "not talking to anyone" is a very clear and loud message on my part.

#TL:DR

The game's current development is pure self-harming to it's Reputation and community, on both neutral and personal Levels.

League of Legends has created a Crater between what it was meant to be and what it is becoming now and said crater only further expands, without us Players having any chance to be heard regarding what we want from the game and what we are convinced we do not want.

It's Latest development has proven to be unthoughtful and linear in both intention and impact. Thought LoL still has a giant playerbase, the amount of people complaining alone is proportionally growing much more than the amount of people joining the community. and then there is still the amount of Players leaving because of said complains.

#Solutions?

As much as there is only banter and complains to be seen, which one or the other might take as pure dissatisfactory flaming, it wouldn't be much of a flame if there was a solution in suggestion, no?

  • FREEZE THE GAME GROWTH

The shortest, and most direct solution, which however would also be the most risky and extreme one, is to just flat out freeze big development and focus on mending the small Things first.

We had a Season of only reworks, so how about a Season of only Balance ensurances? What this game Needs most is to stop overloading itself, and first bring to fruition what it has delivered so far, which it obviously cannot do if it just keeps on growing.

  • REVIVE COMMUNICATION WITH DEVS

Try to create more converesations and Polls like you did with Caitlyn around June. Set up more Discussions between Players and developers to exchange wishes and offers and meet a middle-ground where everyone can be happy, or at least so a lot less people are unhappy with the changes.

  • PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE LOWER LEVEL PLAYERBASE

Which means trying not to just balance around competitive gameplay alone. Nearly 1/2 of the world's League of Legends Players are in Bronze and silver Alone, whereas the playerbase for Diamond and up makes up for only a small fraction of the Players LoL has to offer. Nearly ALL the LoL Players are below statusworthy or competitive Levels of Rankings, and the higher focus in Skillcurves that excells what they can offer ends up making them less and ame a false sense of Rankings being achievable statuses for fashionsense. That Needs to stop, lower ELO should have at least a lovetap, if nothing else.

#Outro

Writing this was certainly not easy, so i would very welcome it if people gave their opinion about how they feel about league, and what they would expect from Riot in order to be a bit more satisfied in their work.

I said a lot, and have spoken my thoughts and my results alike. So with this, i give my Exit.

And i hope that people aren't too salty with this. I know people particularily hate it when solutions are offered with any complaint, but i hope you do take the time to read and consider.

Let me save you some time, this company is now greed driven garbage, and they have no intention of changing it for the better. You want a solution? Don't spend any money on them at all, no matter what.

This is an opinion not a fact. Please stop spreading your opinions as if they are facts. You are misinforming players and engendering an unnecessary sense of bitterness in them.

Pretty much after they reverted leblanc. Threw yasuo in the trash because fervor is no longer there, and probably many coming reworks I decided not to spend money on skins. Why spend money on a champ that will most likely be changed? So yeah I'm with you, this company gets no more money from me.

The boards aren't exactly the best place to get all your information from tbh, and I don't see how a patch every two weeks requires players to have to forget prior knowledge when the changes can be minor. The only big change is the new runes which put everything on it's head, as expected though.

Games are short due to snowballing, yes, but also because people just give up rather than seeing things through on games that are winnable.

In terms of player behavior, I really haven't noticed much toxicity in my games. Maybe it is because I really don't play ranked often, but mainly people just don't talk in my games.

In terms of communication with the devs, I feel like they talk to us quite a bit. There was the illaoi poll, Dev blogs, Reddit usage, responding to threads on here, etc. In terms of balancing in lower elos, they do try. Not saying it is successful, but they really do try.

Esports is popular and a money maker. They want to increase the interest.

With loot chests and merchandise, they have to be paid somehow. Riot employees have bills to pay like us and they are putting out work. Orange essence from skins probably should be up, but loot chests and paid missions aren't unacceptable or anything.

People in ranked are honestly only toxic when they know for sure all hope is lost in winning, for they understand tilting their teamates is a good way to lose.

I know, i didn't specifically apply that what they do to promote moneyearning is unacceptable, but they should not repeat a mistake that got others with similar ambitions into a lot of Publicity with no positive light whatsoever. EA and Overwatch just had it rough last month with the lootcrate Thing, and i for one don't like the thought of a near future where Riot games is also on that scandal-list

And Rioters do sometimes comment, yes, but compared to just a year ago or so, you'd notice it is a LOT less. In my now 5 days that i am back, the most active rioter i have seen is Tantram, in the PB subboard, because some people hold it necessary to lie about chatlogs which he ever so kindly disproves.

and that you haven't had much toxicity in your games yet is honestly great and i'm happy for you. but, speaking from personal experience, it will happen. all it takes is one push into any direction. one Little comment, the slightest application of pressure, and people blow up like a bomb.

Last but not least, Yes, Esports is popular, but the game shouldn't grow more and more based around it. As i commented to someone else earlier, Meta is just a synonym for Pro builds and Picks.

thanks for reviewing this with a more structured basis than most. i like to have a good conversation

Rayjay Redfang1 votes

EA has always been ridiculous, but Riot is generally fine for now other than emotes costing too much. I'm unfamiliar with how they could relate rather.

With the whole varua thing, there were a lot of responses there. Things like that.

For player behavior, it depends on the people. I've seen some pretty tilting things and people don't talk. I had a game with a thresh mid that fed the enemy yasuo. No one said a word. Also had an adc blitz and tf that predictably lost hard and contributed nothing, but still no reaction. These are normals games btw not ranked.

Meta is impossible to avoid, there will always be "these are the best champs, this is the best build". Pros just figure it out or people like to copy pros. There were off meta things that arose though from pros like mordekaiser adc, adc Kennan, support mf, and that's all I can think of.

You got it all wrong... Riot is catering toward the casual players not the competitive scene.

  • RNG runes
  • Overpowered Runes
  • RNG abilities from Zoe.
  • Inept balance team.
  • Buff to last hitting. (Making it easier to last hit.)

Making everything overpowered so that everyone can play against any skill level. (Lower skilled players can equally compete against higher skilled players due to random elements) There's no skill-gap anymore. Random stuff happens in-game, players cannot strategize against. It's just luck based/pure damage/ all you can eat casual fest.

Riot made it easier for players to last hit which benefits unskilled players who don't know how to last hit properly. So, the skilled players who have practiced for hours to last hit efficiently cannot out farm the less skilled players. The skill-gap has been removed. Also, the game is not balanced.

The competitive aspect of League is over. It's a casual game now.

RNG Is by necessity not applied to the runes. They were merely generalized on who they can be applied to, but they aren't random or luck-based at all. Runes still have set stats that are bound to achievable conditions to fully utilize. Zoe is a rather more accurate topic. Her ability to pop 2 redemptions in a row when building full ap because of a Skill is very RNG and gamechanging, however she does lose a lot of teambased utility because her W is the only Skill aside from her E that can contribute anything to anyone other than herself.

And as for how it is not competitive based. You do know that "Meta" is basically just a translation for "Pro builds and Picks" Right? Before the boards were mini-redesigned like they are, Gameplay used to have a sticky post for years, approved by rioters, which specifically states balance changes are measured and applied based on how well competitive performance goes. Such is only further underlined by seemingly random nerfs and buffs for certain champions right before Worlds kicked in.

Zoe is one single champion who reintroduced noobfriendlyness, however the runes did not. Most runes require a high grade of mastery to apply based on the champions played, and for some cases like Vlad and Ryze, their only choices are utility based runes. the New runes didn't redesign the game to be more casual, they merely served the purpose to remove Runes from the game and redesign the mastery Trees to be more generalistic. Riot does strongly focus on competitive Scene and their promotions, one Little gift to us commoners doesn't erase that fact.

Douglas Funnie1 votes

I highly disagree with this statement.

However, I do agree that Riot needs to stop the game growth. Riot needs to focus on the pre-season balance issues and get rid of the RNG shit in-game. It's complete garbage. They need to stop making RNG based champions. Randomness doesn't belong in a competitive game, period.

Eternal Torment1 votes

I know, runes are a topic we all can agree to disagree to one another, but the game's overloaded growth is one Thing i'm glad i am not alone to see.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

don't equate any champion you hate fighting to being "noob friendly", zoe is definitely not a "noob friendly" champion.

What a long well written article.

To bad everything it mentions is completely untrue, just goes to show you, long posts do not equal good posts.

Everything mentioned is completely untrue?

Explain how Pro builds and Picks are the sole Definition of the Meta?

Explain how less and less people are visibly happy with the changes on the boards?

And do tell me how come some champions receive balance changes right before worlds cough jarvan cough solely for being a pick there, when they have been very stable and balanced for a longer period of time? Plus, now that worlds is over, he is being put back to his place from before worlds happened, too.

Esports and Merchandise are growing most out of everything LoL stands for.

Plus, nowhere do you see me apply that anything listed is set in stone. I am very careful with my choice of words, and have the whole time said that it is merely gonna end up bad if it stays that way. Sure, it isn't so well right now, but that doesn't mean it is all bad, nor have i tried or actually said it is.

Please read the whole post before you just comment with WRONG like trump does.

1-Pro builds and picks are never the definition of the meta, very rarely, In low elo bronze-plat, take it from someone who has climbed by himself to gold for three straight seasons. The best way to climb is to find an high damage, slight utility champion and just kill everyone and try to end as quickly and efficently as possible. look at ALL your friends who are gold or higher that aren't support mains, almost all of them I assure you are playing something that does LOTS of damage as their main champion for ranked. For pro play Utility wins games, for it's a five v five environment where everyone has amazing communication, they literally have a coach where part of his job is being PAID to teach them how to have better TEAMWORK. So if you create an envirnment of ten teams who all have amazing teamwork, the meta is going to alter GREATLY.

Prime Example, in pro play Kalista This bitch has always been considered an unbalanced broken high utility nightmare. Her ultimate makes it impossible to kill her support, she has a potential malphite ult if her support does her job correctly, and in long term fights, she marks people so her suppport can start beefing out damage she can gain a hell load of spears to kill everyone. Is she good in solo play where you aren't in voice call with your support? Nope she is pretty worthless.

The boards being happy? Never once in history has the boards been happy it's literally contaminated with bronzies spam posting "OMG X CHAMPION IS SO BROKEN, RITO PLZ NERF" you never see the diamond players making those type of posts, hell you rarely even see gold or silver players making those type of posts. The boards literally is contaminated by shit bronze players.

Every worlds their is a clear set of goals riot wants to get done to make sure it's a balanced patch, to make sure the champions are on an even playing field. Riot has historically always sucked at worlds patches, and trust me when I say, the pro players do not enjoy worlds patches. Ask any pro player, if they could have it their way, they would tell riot to fuck off and let them play on the patch that they qualified in to get into worlds.

I did read your whole post, your whole post is simply untrue garbage.

nearly a hundred people have read your post, in views your topic is a hit, so why is it you aren't even in +5 yet.

Eternal Torment1 votes

I will answer it from below to above since it is easier to write out the Responses that way, for me at least

I don't care for upvotes/downvotes. They are only a mute version of approval or dissaproval. I try to encourage people to talk, and have thus based my post mostly around it that you cannot disagree without reasoning why. People hate to explain their reasons, mostly because they have none that is structured, fair and neutral, and i designed my post specifically so you cannot mutevote and say "i stated what i think", hence no votes.

As for the Pro Play, You Forget that Players do often make Statements in their streams about complains or not, because people generally spam them with "What do you think of X change, of Y champion" etc. Biggest complains i could scratch together so far is how toplane is designed These patches.

And you miss a lot of people's writings in that case. Everyone complains about something, the unreasonable ones are just the most obvious ones. Bias has dangerously increased on the boards, on that one i give you full right, but biast doesn't necessarily mean bronze. Take a look at Players like Hashinshin. He is high elo yet by attitude could be very well compared to your overly stereotypical bronze-silver Player. To find those just takes some good searching.

Kalista has been a difficult topic even outside her heavy Need to teamplay like you are a married couple in bot. But as far as i am concerned, up until early summer she was looked down upon as the weakest marksman, it was with her Mana restoration buff on her E that she started being better again aswell as the major buffs to tank supports with the item minireworks, with whom she generally synergizes the best out of any botlane champ duo. Kalista has always been a nightmare to talk about, but it wasn't until recently where the nightmare was her power being too much, rather than too Little.

And actually, while we could argue for ages, Pro builds do define the meta by most. Sure, Strongest pick and best Build are something that happens without any Players influence, But noone would know those if not for said pro Scene. They discover the powerrankings between champs and items to begin with, and thus give form to the Image of what we perceive as Meta. Yes, we could be VERY nitpicky and say they don't define the meta, they merely find and expose it, but one way or another the meta wouldn't be without them. So the part where pro's define the meta is still a rock solid Statement i defend.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.

The issue is riot has tried to change the system that the game was based around, and as many people can tell you changing a combat system in a game where combat is the main purpose of the game can have serious balance issues, for example:

If you took a fps which is based around aiming and skilled use of tactical decisions and cover and then tried to turn it into a RPG like system you would have to completely remake the whole game, because otherwise the game would be a balance nightmare (much like league is at the moment ) this is because the game was designed around a completely skill orientated combat system where the only thing you spend money on is skins and new guns.

Where as a RPG system is more ability and gear based and thus is incompatible with the original.

How this ties into league is that they took a system that was designed for a variety of buffs from defensive to offensive which provided a balanced cancel out e.g. take x defensive rune to counter y offensive rune, and tried to turn it into a fast paced, high damage and team-orientated game like overwatch minus the first person aspect.

Which is why we now have this mess called the new runes, riot is making the rookie mistake of trying to be something it was never designed and cannot feasibly be designed to become, as it would not only require a literal rework of 99% of the champion roster but would also require a change of how the game mode works making it basically paladins with a lol skin .

this is why riot should stop trying to become something else and work on making the game better, not breaking it more and more until the player base dies out.

IN SHORT: riot is trying to turn the game into something it cannot possibly become without recreating the entire game from scratch.
