@Riot: Is There any Chance of a Champ with a Perspective Shiting Ability?

For instance, a champion who's ultimate places the camera behind them, and controlling them like a god from Smite, or placing the camera in a first person perspective and controlling like an FPS.

Like Imagine Vayne's Final Hour placing you in first person, and turning her gameplay into an FPS for a few seconds.

No, they wouldn't do this because it's just completely impractical and nothing but a gimmick. Changing the camera perspective really serves no purpose to the game whatsoever.

Being able to see on all sides, being able to see over walls, and other aspects; to say that League is a game entirely based on having an RTS style view is an understatement.

I imagine it would be possible to do something like this, but it wouldn't be balanceable. What you'd give up in functional ability (attacking / using abilities / even just FLASHING over walls for starters) would be crippling. The trade off would have to be obscenely strong; as in basically killing everything you see with 0 recourse or counter play. You couldn't balance something like that.

Okay, let's say Vayne hits R, then WASD controls her movement and direction she would roll when she dashes when pressing Q, and if she aims at a target and presses E, she would cast Condemn. We won't know if it is balancable or not until it is put into the game. You can't balance LoL on pen and paper alone.

You want them to create a champ whose ability changes the perspective of 140+ champions which would require separate coding for each character to be played in that perspective?

SSmotzer1 votes

No. Did you read my example? Vayne presses R. Then SHE goes into first person. She still has access to her Q and E but now she controls with WASD.

Mig891 votes

I misunderstood. I thought your example was forcing vayne to go into this mode. This would be a big disadvantage so I thought you meant for this to be some ability another champ forces on someone.

Are Vayne's projectiles skill shots?

If not, how does she elect to shoot a champion standing behind another?

How does she decide what she wants to condemn if there are multiple targets in the same area, either in a row or behind one another?

How do you compensate for the massive reaction loss of having to pan her ENTIRE camera around in order to hit someone behind her / condemn someone behind her?

If it's third person and not true FPS, how do you treat targets DIRECTLY behind her when she has someone infront of her? Which one will she 'target' when you tell her to 'fire' in this mode? What if she wants to attack the other one, what's your answer for her smoothly transitioning targets before she's splatted like a bug?

While simple math isn't the end all-be-all of balance by any means, things can be eye balled fairly reliably. Implementing something like this, something which comes with GIGANTIC loss of control and.. Well, simple playability, would have to come with large amounts of compensation. So large that said champion would have to be a walking ball of death while in this 'mode' in order to have any use, because they wouldn't be able to do any fine-tuned handling otherwise.

This works in Smite because the game is built, from the ground up, for it to work. League is not, it would be both unbalancable and far too costly design wise to ever be worth it.

Well during the ultimate, probably.

Well Condemn is a targetable ability, so it would be whoever she is highlighting.

That's the thing, you'd have to play around that aspect of the first person perspective, and it makes champions that can easily get behind characters that much stronger. Plus, if it is actually Vayne, she could just roll and go invisible for awhile while she turns around.

I don't think it would be out of the question to try and implement characteristics of other games in LoL. Maybe a champion with turning speed could show up in the future, maybe the third or first person champion could make it work, maybe their entire kit could revolve around using the advantages and disadvantages of the difference.

So the answer is yes?

Frankly, when I hear "Pizza feet" it just makes me hungry. But the answer seems to be "possibly."

SSmotzer1 votes

I mean, they haven't made a champion with "pizza feet" since like 2011.

Their current art style looks perfectly fine in different perspectives. I mean, they even make some skin trailers where the camera is all over the place, and the champions look fine.

Hell yeah!

Jhin Ultimate zooms out and focuses on the are he can hit (limiting vision behind him).

So, yes.

Oleandervine1 votes

His ultimate doesn't change his perspective, it simply changes his zoom. His perspective is still top-down RTS, it hasn't changed to 3rd Person over-the-shoulder or First Person.

...well, not with that attitude.

HeeroTX1 votes

They've somewhat done this for LCS replays (granted, those are replays, but should hold up since it's all just 3d models) so it seems like its definitely POSSIBLE.

Oleandervine1 votes

It won't hold up because you'd go from point and click operation of your champion to WASD operation of your champion, which not only is a jarring transition in a game, but requires you to completely recode how a champion operates based on whether or not it's in ult or not.

SSmotzer1 votes

...don't a lot of champions have unique code?

The transition could be a thing where the character goes invisible and untargetable for a second, then like a red line goes across the screen and expands, turning the whole screen red before showing the first person perspective. Then their Q and E would still be usable, and their W could be a passive ability, so it doesn't mess with the player's mojo.

Micbran1 votes

The answer may be yes but the question you should be asking is: why? What’s the point? If anything, switching to first person/thirdperson over the shoulder cripples your view.

SSmotzer1 votes

Maybe the character gets tunnel vision when killing monsters, maybe they have cool goggles that gives her a hud. Maybe crippling their view is a way to balance them.
