@Meddler: Will we ever have new Champions with Taunt CC's?

darkdill··20 votes·11,277 views

The only ones we've got right now who can taunt as a CC are Rammus Shen Galio . I honestly think there needs to be more taunting going on, but it seems like Riot dislikes the CC as a whole because of how it tends to have counterplay issues or forces the victim into a "kill yourself" scenario.

Is there any hope of Taunters in the future, or has the Champion Design team labelled it off-limits?

I expect we'll make more Taunt using champions at some point. It's a type of effect with some pretty specific gameplay, so as with other specialized CCs we'll probably only ever use it occasionally, in part to ensure those champions with it remain distinctive.

Stars Shaper2 votes

How about the opposite? Forcing champions to ignore yourself?

Akeydel1 votes

wat?

Stars Shaper1 votes

Sort of impossibility to be target of targeted abilities and AAs

Akeydel1 votes

ooooh, i thought you were saying the opposite of "ensuring those champions with it remain distinctive" and that meddler was "forcing champions to ignore himself" whatever that would mean.

Stars Shaper3 votes

Nah I just suggested a "reverse taunt" mechanic :P Something like a mage with actual cast times would want.

Serenity Now8 votes

It's called fear.

Cuix2 votes

Mechanically, no. An opposite-taunt is actually a stasis. Instead of "you must attack me", it's "you cannot attack me".

Dar Raksada1 votes

or poppy ult might work as an opposite taunt (on the players she doesn't ult)

GroundRuleDouble1 votes

A taunt forces you to walk towards the champ and auto attack them. A fear forces you to walk away from the champ and cannot auto attack.

Seems like fear is the opposite of taunt to me.

Cuix1 votes

Except the original commenter actually described a semi-stasis, and then talked with Med about that sort of individualized stasis.

qetzel1 votes

So, for example, Vlad's pool or Fizz's jump?

Stars Shaper1 votes

Not really, those are total immunities. The mechanic I wanted doesn't save you from Area targeted abilities (such as Xerath W,Q,R)

Nucleophilic atk1 votes

So like Poppy's thingy?

Also, those two are not total immunities. They are just untargetable.

ChaosThief1 votes

I think he means you can only be hit by click targeted spells or line based skill shots.

Probably would be easier to just do targeted spells, to be honest.

KidSpectre1 votes

You mean...untargetability? :o Or maybe something like, idk, stealth?

Stars Shaper1 votes

Like that, but being actually visible and that doesn't brake on damage. It needs to be refined ofc. I just put the idea's dones.

RiotMeddler7 votes

An ability that made you untargetable just to one specific enemy could generate some very cool play if paired with the right kit. You'd probably want to have the duration be noticeably longer than other regular types of CC, given 'immunity from one guy who's otherwise free to act' is a lot weaker than 'that guy can't do stuff to anyone'.

Rendering one enemy unable to affect you's not a good skill on a champion that can 1v1 other champions though. The interesting decisions around who you make yourself immune to for a bit and who your target attacks instead just vanish in a 1v1 fight. Easy solution there though thankfully - throw such an ability on a support. Would probably go best on one with moderately low ranges who's relatively squishy, make them dance around a bit within a fight while having the option of temporary safety against the biggest threat.

Hellioning5 votes

How about a CC that makes it so that you and a target cannot effect each other? That might work on a diving champion; similar to Poppy's current ultimate, but weaker, since there are four enemies on the team that can effect you, not one, and you cannot damage the person you're targetting, so it'd be useless 1v1. Might be good in the bot lane, allowing you to ignore the support's attempt to peel, or as an anti-gank device, allowing you to ignore the jungler and run back to your tower.

Would probably have to be on an ultimate...

...I think I came up with rework Poppy's new ult.

Varis2 votes

Came from Surrender@20 to say exactly this. Pleasant surprise to find my suggestion already on the page!

I like this a lot better than "this would be too strong on a champ that can 1v1, so we'll put it on someone who's designed not to do damage." I don't really like that pigeonhole. It should go on someone who you want to target, not someone who's likely to be ignored anyway. Put it on some evasive ADC or mage instead, or put it on a tank so they can slap it on a Vayne and wade into the team without getting shredded for a while. ...Granted, the tank could fill the support role, but still.

This and the other "force attacking" mechanic seem a good combo for a Mind Controller character which is an archetype we are missing.

It also fits a spectral kind of character since possession is a common phenomenon associated with them.

Might be another Darkin? "Hipnos, The Darkin Mind"? (from the Greek God of sleep Hypnos

I long ago envisioned a mind control champ, with a skill that could take control of (or manipulate) pets. But the application would be very limited, maybe as a jungler skill, imagine using the Blue Golem to kill the two smaller ones, while they defend themselves dealing damage to themselves, or Grabbing Tibbers and turning him on Annie, see how she likes that!

(the same champ i imagined skills like a passive that pings whenever you are seen or targetted by an enemy, don't know how it would work, but combined with a dash or invulnerability spell, could lead to some interesting plays - the passive would help detect stealth'd champs and wards too :D)

If the mind control skill had no limit, you could walk around with a blue golem or red lizard and just use him in lane, then kill him if you need the buff :D

Personally i hope that you aim for such kinds of CC for future supports. I know that many players percieve this role to be boring or uninteresting but for me this is one of the most versatile roles with a lot of potential.

Bard is a good example of a support with a lot of potential when used right. His kit is very interesting but imo not really rewarding at the moment as it forces the rest of the team to play around it. But Bard is not the topic here.

Hmm, this gives me an idea for my Dancer Champion Concept's ultimate. Her current one is pretty much a modified variant of Alistar's ultimate, which isn't something I really like, so going with something like this could prove very interesting.

Krfin1 votes

BUT... That is basically a weaker version of poppy ult, which makes you untargetable by four members of the enemy team.

There are at least three ways to use taunt, and only one has been used in League of Legends so far:

  1. Force enemies to attack the tank. Since you're tough enough to take the hits, you just stand there while everyone whales on whoever you taunted.
  2. Force enemies to attack someone who is squishy. This is still a debuff - at best, they get to attack someone they already wanted to attack - but it encourages the taunter to move, leading the angry mob around instead of standing still to get beaten up. Since it's not as crippling as being forced to attack the tank, you could afford to have the effect last longer than on a tank.
  3. Force allied and neutral creeps to attack an enemy. This does a number of things: it pulls the lane and makes it easier to last hit, since your minions are too busy attacking the enemy champion to attack the enemy creeps, it makes it easier to zone the enemy since getting close enough to kill your creeps means they will get attacked, and it can potentially ruin somebody's day if they're close enough for a jungle camp or two to join in.
Serenity Now1 votes

Actually, I could see a good support ability here.

Let the support mark a target, and all nearby minions will attack it for several seconds.

Icestar11861 votes

Idea:

Force 2/3/4/5/all nearby minions and neutral monsters to attach the target. Target takes [something]% increased damage from sources other than the caster. (maybe give the percent damage a small AP ratio?)

Interesting, hadn't thought about that approach. Could be cool on a short ish range squishy champ with some form of ground placements they want to try and kite people through - Singed Poison, Teemo Shrooms etc.

Wait a minute, doesn't Teemo already do all of this? ;)

That's a skill I'm fairly sure we'll do on a kit at some point, probably on a champ with some minion creation ability. Boomer Bile's a pretty fun ability that, if done in the right way in LoL should generate some good gameplay (wouldn't want it to be spammable in lane early for example, given how powerful a full minion wave can be at levels ~1-3).

AbodyHUN6661 votes

What do you think about a soft taunt when you can move, but only attack the one who taunted you. I can imagine a tank or support with this ability forcing the enemies have to commit a lot when they try to hit him a few times in a teamfight, but since they can move between attacks the taunt wouldn't be broken op. The ability could be turned on for a few seconds and affect everyone who attacks the guy.

Champion Skin1 votes

Though wouldn't that ability pretty much be useless on mages? Or does it also prevent ability use?

AbodyHUN6661 votes

Maybe it could. It could be turned into a reverse poppy ult of some kind.

Champion Skin2 votes

Well that could be cool like your targets only being able to damage/CC you? That makes me think of a challenge/duel or something Stand and fight me 5v1 scrubs XD (Though I would add a range to this thing... so you don't just use it on the enemy and run away preventing the enemy from doing anything)

AbodyHUN6661 votes

A range is definietly needed, otherwise it would be the single strongest damage mitigation cc in the game.

Champion Skin2 votes

Well not really... It is weaker then stuns and such as you can still deal damage to one target and you still do stuff like... run away...

It all depends on duration of course

And well it does allow you to mess up and waste your abiilities on targets you can't damage/CC... but well... people can always mess up...

yeah, true.

Sticking with the theme of taunts...

  1. Force enemies to only target you (think a reverse poppy).
  2. Prevent enemies from running away (think Soraka's speed boost).
  3. Take reduced damage from an enemy. Could include decreasing their cooldowns.
  4. Increase the cooldowns of an enemy. Could include increasing their damage.

Taric could use a taunt because he has no gapcloser so let the enemy close the gap.

A charm would fit him WAY better though.

RiotMeddler7 votes

We did talk about a charm for Taric, but ultimately concluded a stun was the better gameplay fit, with the added benefit of preserving an aspect of his existing kit.

MrBuffington3 votes

I know you can't really say much now (especially since things are still WiP), but I hope his stun will be more interesting than a simple conversion to linear, single target skillshot...

ULTRAF0RCE2 votes

saying as taric is kind of the poster boy for point and click cc my guess is they might just make it a more interesting targeted stun instead.

Is it too early to ask if you've come to prefer one precise visual look for him and/or what his ultimate would do?

Every champ has access to taunt it's called verbal abuse the only trade off is that it can target your team too mute hard counters it but good thing its so off meta that you won't see it too often
