What is it with Riot's obsession on making champion's passive have some kind of shield?

Probably because of all the burst.

Also Shen.

There are plenty of sustain passives and autoattack steroids too. It's just what passive buffs tend to be like.

Its a good way to let a champion occasionally dive without making them build entirely tank or letting them dive all the time using high base stats.

For malphite it also acts as a "fake heal" to give give sustain to champions in the landing phase.

There you go that's the real reason.

It's an easy way to say "Hey, this champ over here is one you should probably avoid trading with sometimes"

Instead of making their passive really complex (like Jhin) or simple (Amumu), it's a really easy way to establish very clear windows of power and make it a lot more visible when that champ is safe to go in on. I never trade with a Poppy or Camille when their passive comes online, that's when they're most powerful.

A little lazy? Maybe. But it's effective in conveying what a character is about and where their power lies.

Because it sucks when Caitlyn walks into max range and attacks you once over and over and over and you can't do anything about it.
