Do selfless players really exist in league?

League of Legends Match History

Most of the posts I put on the boards are critiques of poor play by teammates, or complaints about how something (champ, rune, item, matchmaking, or punishment/discipline system is flawed) along with suggestions for how it should/needs to be improved. While there's nothing wrong with arguing for how something needs to be fixed or how to improve an aspect of league, the sum of it all tends to be a heavy weight. So today I wanted to share a happy story.

While I had two selfish teammates in the game above that made it more than 2x as difficult as it should have been to win, I had two great teammates who mostly played smart and one was super selfless. So I was fighting singed top and I knew he was baiting me by the way he was playing. Malz was spam pinging that akali was coming too. But I knew I could kill singed and probably escape. So I stayed and pretended to take the bait. I got singed before akali also ignited and jumped me. I probably could have walked out alive and been okay, but malz tp'd top in order to save me because he thought she'd kill me. Never once in all my years of playing league has a teammate done that for me without having been given a very good incentive to go out of their way to help me like that before. Not once. So akali ends up just barely escaping due to her w and flash. I split cs with malz, and we come out with a 1 for 0 in a 2v2 and get first tower of the game. We had a few other great combo's that game - like a 2 for 1 in a 2v3 tower dive mid onto a fed bot duo and his akali - but that moment just really stuck with me. I see so many boosted players, trolls, and mindlessly toxic people in almost every match... with much of their hate and troll directed at me. Seeing someone do something really nice (tp is a long cd and he gave up some cs mid to help) for me was a great reminder that TRULY nice and selfless players exist... or at least that we can have our positive moments.

Share your best moment of teammate(s) being extra positive/nice below if you have one and let me know what you think.

Selfless? Trying to win isn’t selfless, it’s called being smart. People playing only for good KDA match history maybe don’t care about winning as much though.

That's exactly how most players think - in pure kda terms to decide if you are good or bad and... give ME all the cs and I will carry.

That leads to: false beliefs that a player is good

false accusations of "inting"

lost teamfights because nobody is willing to die to engage the fight when you'd get an easy TEAM win if one of 2 teammates just committed

adc's and others (generally adc in my experience) afk solo farming w/o pressuring anything while team loses base cuz they fed for 15 min straight

more flame and troll play

"I'm losing lane, so I might as well soft int and stop putting in my best effort even if my team could easily win if I let them carry me or help me (in time... not immediately) catch back up" mentality

If you were offered a wheel barrow or a forklift to move 1000 lbs of bricks from one location to another, sure you can do it with the wheel barrow; however, using the forklift makes far more sense. Players these days want to do it all their own and 1v5 and if they can't, then they're going to make sure you don't get to. That's what happens all too often. They choose the wheel barrow instead of the forklift just because somebody else is driving it or because they didn't think of it. Seeing malz's play was refreshing because it was the complete opposite of this. It was 100% about team over self. It was about working together, not playing just to make yourself look good.

I mean look at my last game where i "fed" as J4. Sure I dropped 1 kill. But my ult utility and teamfights and ganks were all good. I didn't kill often, but I often set up a kill or series of kills. I even set up an ace being the only one to die because I dropped a 5 man ult in mid lane and died instantly, but dropped their entire team down to 75% and had them all trapped for our Ziggs to ult and unload on them all for free while trapping them in melee range of our tryndamere.
