What I don't understand about new Garen is the ratio on his E

Miraweave··8 votes·1,700 views

It scales from 46% total AD at rank one to 50% total ad at rank 5.

Why not just 50% at all ranks? It's not like 4% AD is even remotely significant damage, especially earlygame when your total AD is pretty low anyway. This entire thing seems overly complex and it accomplishes absolutely nothing. Why even bother?

Remember that the AD ratio is per tick. Let's say you're a lvl 9 Garen with a maxed out E. At lvl 9, your E now had 7 ticks of damage instead of 5. Each of those ticks gains an extra 4% AD scaling by leveling up the skill. So at level 9, you effectively get an extra 28% AD per E. That is a pretty significant amount.

Yes, but that 50% ratio matters significantly less at early levels. That's the point. The ratio is already 50% at max rank, my question is why it scales up at all when the difference between 46% and 50% is totally insignifigant with the low amount of AD he'll have earlier in the game anyway.

The difference between 46% AD and 50% AD per tick on the rank one ability is less than 4 damage per tick.

That's just the balance we fell on, really. If it were to be 50% at all ranks instead of 46%, that would make it a 20% higher Total AD ratio when you consider all 5 ticks, and the discrepancy only grows from there. It's not an enormous difference, but I think it's significant enough to warrant being there.

46% --> 50% (slightly less then 10% increase)

if you count 5 tics 46% X 5 = 230% 50% X 5 = 250%

230% --> 250% (still slightly less then 10% increase)

I do not see where you get 20% from...

Uh... What is 250 - 230?

Is math really that hard?

Sire Hippington1 votes

math isn't that hard, but language isn't 100% precise. '20% higher Total AD' could also mean Total AD-ratio *** 1.2** rather than _Total AD-ratio + 20% total AD _

Though that X1.2 ratio wouldn't change with the number off ticks, so with a bit logical thinking it's obvious he meant +20%...

20% total AD =/= 20% total damage.

Not only is it per tick, but it's also scaling upwards by 33% against an individual target. The % itself might not sound like much, but let's talk actual numbers here, shall we?

Let's say that you are Garen with 100 bonus AD. What's the difference between a rank 1 Judgment at level 1 and a rank 5 Judgment at level 9?

At level 1, you deal 46 damage 5 times, which is 230. Against a single target, that number increases to 306. At level 9, you deal 50 damage 7 times, which is 350. Against a single target, that number increases to 465.

So, as you can see, there are lots of different intricate bonuses going on here besides the % bonus AD ratio. But even though the two Garens above had the exact same AD, the difference in rank made a huge difference.

The 46%-50% ratio is the single-target ratio. The multi-target one is 34.5 scaling to 37.5.

dunno. but what i know is that the tooltip is bugged and they stil didnt fix it. at least last time i checked.

it improperly calculates the base damage of the spin, and only adds it once, not once per tick. right now the tooltip states the value as

base damage + tick# x ad ratio

when it should be

tick# x (base damage + ad ratio)

Well, it is only 4% but don't forget the number of ticks also scale up.

Idk it's stuff like that that makes a difference

Thats 4% that scales up to 20% to 40% in terms of level scaling.

But you always max E first anyway. It's totally insignificant at early levels and it's already 50% by the time the change in ratio actually matters. That's the point I'm making.

If it were 46% at all ranks I'd understand that they wanted to reduce the lategame damage. But increasing the ratio per rank by 1% when the thing is maxed by level 9 doesn't make any sense. The difference between 46% AD per tick and 50% AD per tick at early levels would barely do anything, and by the time you have enough AD that it would, the ratio is going to be like 49% so it still doesn't matter.

Meh. Barely is still something. It makes him weaker early to a degree. Also, there is base damage that goes up per rank too. Its more about compounding effects to make a smoother power curve.

yeah but when it's a difference of 3-4 damage per tick, and that's before armor reduction, it doesn't make any sense.

I guarantee that the scaling ratio has no noticeable effect on his powercurve in the same way that increasing the base damage of Ahri's Q by one damage wouldn't have any effect on her powercurve.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Leave garen e alone Its pretty bonkers right now lets keep it that way for atleast one patch

ULTRAF0RCE1 votes

just something that wasn't mentioned, it is not going to be overly complex for the average player simply because in game you don't actually get to see what the ratio is for your abilities.

Sire Hippington1 votes

If it would be 50% all ranks, you probably wouldn't max it first. However, i do think garren still is meant to max E first, so the ad-ratios scales with ranks. And while it doesn't feel significant, at rank 10 it's a 32% ad difference over the full duration, thats some difference(at that point, probably up to 50 damage, depending on runes/built)
