Why does Kled have 80% damage auto attack when dismounted?

I don't understand the logic of that, when he's dismounted, he only has two abilities, he's so slow he can't run away. Meanwhile, it's not like Kled does 20% extra damage with auto attacks when he's mounted....Nor does he have any extra armor or magic resist.... I realize he has an extra chunk of health, but in dismount he doesn't even have a full kit, lol. He doesn't have ult or E, so...Why's it necessary to also make his AA do 20% less damage too? That seems ridiculously harsh.

It's almost like the champion is designed to be strong when mounted, and weak when dismounted... Crazy

I wonder this a lot

Makes perfect sense to me. After all, part of champion design involves flavor consistency. Anybody familiar with how mounted knights functioned in reality will understand how much more damage a mounted fighter is capable of than a foot soldier.

In terms of balance, it's not like Kled is weak right now.

A knight wasn't exactly the fantasy that riot was going for with Kled though.

A Knight would be considered Heavy Cavalry. They are heavily Armored, but maintain their mobility simply by being mounted. And using weapons that facilitate the speed and power of their mount. (A Lance) Herc would probably be a better fit for this fantasy, as his power increases with MS. (Though he's not technically a mounted champion)

Kled was more designed as light cavalry. Which don't necessarily make full use of a mounts charge. Rather they are skirmishers who rely on their speed to make surgical attacks. (not necessarily turning that speed into power.)

Realistically, the reduced damage on Kled's dismounted attacks, is likely their as a balancing leaver. Riot was probably worried that a Kled with his Full AD, would be too good at farming minions. (OR regaining his mount in ways, other than attacking enemy champions.)

I just used "knight" as a universally recognized example of cavalry.

Even though Kled is more of a skirmisher, having a height advantage by being mounted allows for significantly more force to be applied to each strike, since in practice he'd be raining blows down on an enemy and adding the weight of his weapon to the power of his strikes, like a knight. Horses IRL can also be trained to rear up and drop down in conjunction with the blows of a sword, which adds the entire mount's weight to each strike. It wouldn't surprise me if Skaarl was adding strength to Kled's blows in a similar fashion.

Think of it like this:

  • I grab a 2 by 4 and hit you with it

  • I grab a 2 by 4, get on top of a horse, have the horse run at full speed, then hit you with the 2 by 4 as I'm speeding past you on top of a horse.

Which one's gonna hurt more? The one that's moving faster into your body.

Even just stepping onto a stool is gonna make it hurt more, too. You get to raise your weapon higher and drop it down farther for the strike, which lets gravity add a ton of force.

Flavor is important.

It doesn’t really matter takes him 4 autos to get skaral back. Then you get a shit ton of health back for basically doing nothing. It’s not a big problem

5 autos and a Q

Damage for range i believe is the big thing here on top of flavor of knights.

Because if he manages to remount he gets all of Skaarl's health back and basically auto-wins the 1v1.

Thematically it makes sense as a mounted warrior.

Gameplay-wise? Kled has potential (and a rather easy way of) regaining up to THE ENTIRETY of his bonus health, during combat. I'd say this sort of balances it out.

And if you look at it another way - when dismounted, Kled instantly gains another two spells (2 stacks on Q) regardless of his original cooldowns, effectively giving him a fifth spell that also has long range, deals AOE damage and lets him dash - optionally to cross terrain, at that.

He's poking you in the kneecaps, I'd think it would hurt a little less than if he was slashing up your face from Skaaaarl
