NOT A SINGLE JUNGLER WITH A POSITIVE WIN RATE VS UDYR PLAT+

Let's stop pretending he's a "bad" champion even if he's somewhat basic in his kit. He has an over 60% win rate early and unlike J4, Rek'Sai, Pantheon, Olaf etc., his win rate is still fantastic even late game. He's hovering 54% past 40 minutes and his mid game win rate is good too. There is no part of his power curve where he's actually doing poorly (unlike say Amumu who starts with a terrible early win rate). This is even more impressive considering how varied his builds and runes are. He's performing this well despite a lot of people picking suboptimal stuff at a fairly high frequency. This champion is actually amazing and I'd argue overtuned in a SQ environment (perhaps underestimated in competitive). He has had the highest or near highest win rate almost every patch this season.

In fact, he is more oppressive vs weaker early game junglers than anything else I've faced and doesn't even really get outscaled. Yes, his teamfighting may be bad but he can create a lot of disruption, split, take objectives solo and is a menace in skirmishing. I don't know why he's still "sleeper" or why no one talks about him.

His ganks may not be the most powerful but there's always going to be someone overextended in SQ and he can chase them down for a basically guaranteed kill. Even if the lanes play super safe, that means their jungler has no priority and can't safely invade or farm his own camps. They will be isolated vs Udyr because lanes can't roam to help when their wave is almost at turret. Many junglers can't even run if Udyr sees them and apart from maybe a level 2 Pantheon, I'm not sure if anyone can actually duel him.

For people saying that he's bad in high ELO, the current rank 7 (PantsAreDragon) has more Udyr games than any other champion and with an insane 68% win rate. Udyr is not fine and needs slight early game nerfs if he's going to still be pretty solid late game. Even something like -3 AD may do something.

BTW: I realize that Vi is statistically doing just as well and has virtually no losing matchups. She even has twice the play rate. The reason I'm so annoyed by Udyr is due to his insane level 2. He can shut me out of the game on weaker picks. Vi at least needs level 3 to be relevant and a lot of her win rate is due to the utiltiy from her R, Q and even the shred on W. She's not usually walking into your jungle early and forcing you out and she'd be taking a serious risk doing it. Udyr is so fast that he doesn't even get punished for it. I think Udyr is much stronger than Vi in the hands of an expert jungler who knows how to abuse him.

tl;dr, but here's my take on Udyr. Udyr is currently only strong because counter jungleing is incredibly powerful at the moment, and no one can duel Udyr. He can just walk into enemy jungle at level 2 and beats any other jungler, therefor getting both scuttle crabs early game and potentially a kill+the enemy's 2nd buff. The only reason why he isn't op is because he cannot gank botlane. It's literally impossible, if he gets hit with a single cc he can't gank it, and bot is the most important lane in the game. Udyr will win most games where his bot goes even, and almost all games where his bot wins, however he will never win if his bot loses. Any jungler with half a brain will just camp botlane and stay away from Udyr with wards, however most people don't understand this. This is why I never ban Udyr and I never had trouble with him. My current strategy is to hover Hecarim (my main) and leave Udyr open, Hecarim is OP but Udyr hard counters him if the Heca player is just a dumb fotm player.

There are some champions that can kill udyr even in early game. Nocturne Pantheon comes to my mind. Well thats not true that its impossible to gang botlane. It is just harder and udyr is one of few jungler that needs to come in mid-trade in most gangs. I think thats why he is harder to pull of than junglers like reksai or J4.

To be honest I found extremly frustrating to play against Pantheon. His passive counter whole udyrs kit. With clever panth play udyr will not land a single stance.

Sure, if you play an even better champ (Hecarim) and one that is also capable of snowballing lanes very easily, it's not a problem. However, camping bot isn't always possible and sometimes they lose even before that. If they overextend and Udyr shows up at the right time, they still die. He can just flash CC and stun to kill fast. He can even wait till his bot trades and CC is blown before going in (perhaps lane ganking). Good luck camping for your Ezreal - Janna vs a safe and smart bot lane. Meanwhile, Udyr takes Rift, cycles your jungle, probably kills your top and mid... gg. This isn't a reliable strategy. It works some games and fails in many others. It's a matchup and game dependent strategy.

Even though he is very powerful, he doesn't really stand a chance against udyr unless he is ahead through ganking. Udyr is a classic counter to Hecarim, assuming that Udyr has maintain the higher ground through counter jungling/powerfarming/ganking

WrÆth4 votes

Jungle main here, I don't think that counterjungling is strong at all right now. Counterjungling is a fantastic way below plat to grab the game by the balls and solo carry because you not only put yourself ahead but tilt the likely mentally unstable enemy jungler and set them behind. I'd say that around plat though, it becomes very hard to counter jungle nowadays without getting collapsed on by 3, even with lane priority. I don't know what it is, but I think the scuttle changes showed everyone how important early skirmishes can decide games so everyone hyper rotates nowadays, even if it means losing waves. On the other hand, perma ganking is completely out of control. Camps don't give enough xp or gold to justify just power farming so the goal for 90% of junglers right now is get level 2/3 and get into as many lanes as possible before 10 minutes, even if it means sacrificing camps. Levels as a jungler mean near nothing anymore because junglers have lost so much ability to solocarry games so the idea is that you play a second support that effects the entire map. At least that's how I view jungle nowadays.

The counter jungling is exactly why I started playing Ivern. As someone who has played an ungodly amount of shaco and lost to udyr, Ivern is almost impossible to counter jg and allows me to secure scuttles. Downside is if your carries arent fed you lose.

Jesus fuck, I just looked at it. 52.7% total average, 52.1% plat+, and a 55.3% winrate in Master+

Illabethe2 votes

lmfao. If you think that's high..... you're delusional.

Game is not balanced around 50%... especially at elos where people are actually doing well (Plat is generally 52-53% overall win rate, and consists of the top 3% of the community, so they ALL have good win rates by default, which adjusts the baseline win rate to not be 50%)

DuskDaUmbreon3 votes

Of course the baseline doesn't always need to be 50 (although I don't really get your argument - Yes the people playing the champion are better, but so are their opponents), but 55% is huge.

The winrate from master+ is hardly a representative sample. You’re likely to have one tricks at this elo, and more importantly sample size in general is a big issue. Citing stats from masters+ is a fools errand.

Honestly, playing melee probably is harder in many ways (not Udyr specifically). I wouldn't consider that just a joke. ADCs have more straightforward play and at least one player dedicated to just helping them. On the other hand, they're also more important so mistakes are magnified.

Nah, J4 loses too hard to Udyr in a 1v1, I'd say Udyr's high winrate is also due thanks to J4's popularity. The others except Rek'sai I half agree, if Udyr gets the jump on them they die, if they're not braindead they outpace Udyr and make him useless. Udyr's biggest strength is idiots trying to 1v1 him.

I haven't tried the others you list but I play quite a bit of Kindred and never found the matchup easy. Your Q isn't enough distance to escape him if he finds a flank and he can still flash stun and basically one shot you. You do outscale him hard as Kindred but it's still difficult early if he ever gets the jump on you. Udyr is actually in the top 5 worst matchups for Kindred statistically (but still 48% win rate for her).

Well actually, pants does play some offmeta champs and do pretty good with them. As of recent I know he's played fiddle, and amumu. One of his matches with amumu was against qtpie, another very good player, and he creamed them.

Let’s remember though that winrate is not the only metric to which we should be attempting to explain a champions power.

I agree with your general sentiment, Udyr is absolutely not weak currently. Statistics show him as performing well all season. But we have to be careful because a champions winrate is not only a result of that champions power directly. There are several things to which contribute to this:

Meta - what are the popular junglers, what items are good and bad and what is in demand right now. We are in a meta where skirmishing junglers seem to be the norm, and Udyr fits that bill to a tee. Practically any jungle item is good on Udyr, and his build path is incredibly flexible. More on this in a second. What are the common picks in the jungle and throughout the game? Well, this is a little unstable but generally Udyr performs well against most junglers and always has so this isn’t really new. More on this in a second as well.

Game mechanics - jungle XP is atrocious right now. It should be no wonder that a fast clearing counter jungler would be performing well. This makes his capacity to solo objectives even more desirable because if he’s not ganking or clearing, he’s taking objectivess. This is also doubled by the fact that he can practically build anything, so it makes him pretty stable throughout the game regardless of how he’s performing as a jungler.

Past statistical analysis and onto observation and intuition:

As much as we’d like to think observation and intuition don’t play a role in balancing, they do. And they should. Stats do not explain every aspect of performance because individual performance in this game varies so heavily that unless you’re controlling for these things hardcore (which you can’t), you can rarely explain it all with stats. This is where professional experience matters. And you can question riots experience as players balancing the game, that’s fine, but I simply want to point out that it does matter.

So let’s ask the question of observation based on one fact:

We know Udyr almost always performs well against every jungler. I mean really, who can deal with him early? He is the classic counter jungler and that has always been his niche. In exchange, he’s a weak team fighter and focuses more on objectives, small skirmishes, and split pushing.

The observable question:

Is he doing things he’s not normally supposed to be doing?

Honestly, no. He’s doing exactly what he’s always done. When I watch jungler streams, especially Trick (when he’s actually playing on his high elo account); when I play games even in mid plat range; I don’t see Udyr doing anything he’s not supposed to do. He’s not teamfighting well. He’s not snowballing disproportionately, meaning he needs to gank and help his team get ahead because he can’t rely on clearing, counterjungling and objectives alone to solidify his scaling. In other words, he’s currently working as intended.

Could it be that he’s doing his job too well currently? Stats say that may be true but are those things explained better by other elements of the game or is it a result of his power directly? Well, it’s likely both but I’d say the meta, game physics and items in particular (this is a big one) explain his presence much more than anything. I don’t think this warrants a nerf...yet. I think at the very least, he should have significant scrutiny placed upon him. And then once riot gets a better taste for him, they can make a decision. But I wouldn’t rush to nerfs, that mindset is how entire classes of champions get power creeped.

Sorry but if the pros aren't playing it there must be weaknesses that we solo queue players don't punish. So I don't think he is a sleeper in the competitive scene maybe just not as useful as your sej, skarner, j4, reksai etc..

That's not really true. Udyr's play style is extremely different from the normal junglers they play (especially in macro). It's not just about his kit. I think he requires quite a bit of specific game knowledge to play well. Moreover, they'd almost never have had practice on him and are probably not even testing him just due to bias as well as the fact that he's not that popular even in SQ. Pro teams have certainly been slow to adapt to strong picks occasionally.

Pro teams can have weaknesses in itemization, theorycrafting and drafting. This was even more obvious when we had the old rune system and some combinations were just clearly suboptimal mathematically. It wouldn't be a surprise to me if they glossed over Udyr or simply consider the massive strategic and comp adaptions required as being too difficult for what is probably not objectively stronger than their current picks.

Anyway, perhaps the delaying of the Scuttler spawn will make Udyr less annoying. The jungle meta is REALLY ideal for him and event he jungle XP nerfs indirectly help him because of how strong his early is relative to other junglers.

Is there any jungler who isn't a metaslave that gets to top 25? The power of champions matters a lot at that level and even more so when you have stat checks at scuttlers so every tiny advantage matters.

Anyway, looking through my history with Udyrs, I will say that maybe I'm overestimating him a bit. They've nearly all had Udyr in their top 5 most played so they clearly know what they're doing. Maybe that's a more significant factor than their pick. He's still frustrating to face though. I'm pretty much permabanning him if we don't have an ideal comp vs him and/or I am picking early.

Pants Are Dragon pretty much explained why he dropped Udyr for Kindred/Reksai. Both of those are far superior gankers and most importantly offer picks to their team without suiciding into the enemy team in slow walk.

Udyr is great for lower elo tho since you can't rely on people collapsing.

Udyr isn't strong. He just capitalizes on level 2 kills better than any other champion. If Udyr is in a game, the other team should always expect a level 2 gank. Which...... most times they don't...... even at high elo.

If he doesn't get those, he's almost always trash.....

Notice that high elo Udyrs pretty much max Turtle more than any other secondary skill, even though Bear is move speed and Phoenix allows double layered damage (Tiger + Phoenix). It's because it's a heal/shield on low cooldown and when leveled it outscales trades.

The fights are actually pretty long when Udyr takes Turtle, but he's just able to capitalize on the survivability.

Disembark3 votes

What are you even saying. Udyr is not a level 2 ganking jungler. Udyr contests scuttle crabs but is an absolutely awful ganker. He is a strong power farmer and invader.

Udyr is a lot like Asol where he has a low play rate, but the mains are very good with him. Personally I don't think he's overpowered and there are a ton of solid counter-picks vs him.

Jax completely outscales him super hard and Jax E nullifies Udyr's damage.

Udyr has no way to deal with Rammus past the early game.

Lissandra is decent mid vs him as she is super hard to gank and lategame a well timed R can instantly blow Udyr up.

Kai'sa and Vayne both out kite him and Udyr has no way to get to them outside of flash.

He legit can't do anything vs Kayle except get melted.

Unlawful Salmon2 votes

From a Diamond Udyr 1 trick he is certainly not op. There are a ton of counterpicks that can easily beat him even early game which is mostly where Udyr gets his leads. Not to mention his lategame isn't that great and he has no teamfight presence. His playstyle is very different from every other champion, and he is really fun to play. To be honest his biggest strength is how little experience people have playing vs him.

Tips for playing vs Udyr:

1.) Don't try to duel him early. 2.) Keep early objectives warded. 3.) If you are a slow jungler make sure to ward your blue (or 2nd buff) and be prepared to vertically jungle for your 2nd buff. 4.) Hard CC and Jax/Darius/Fiora type bruisers are his biggest weakness as he loses to all of them and can't out splitpush them. They all have better teamfight capabilities as well. 5.) Force a 5 on 5 teamfight if ahead. Even if he splitpushes you can just ace his team and he will be forced to back to defend which he sucks at. Most Udyrs will avoid 5 on 5 fights always so you likely will be in a 5v4 teamfight. 6.) Udyr players tend to sit top lane as ganking bot lane is really hard for him. Mid depends on which champ is mid lane. LeBlanc and Lissandra are almost impossible for him to gank. 7.) Udyr is a macro focused champion. Keep this in mind when pathing the map against him. He's fairly predictable as his options are usually limited. 8.) Udyr has no stealth, dashes, true damage, long range poke, wind wall, or even Ult. All he can do is catch you without proper vision and run at you. (or away from you.) 9.) Keep in mind if he builds all damage or off tank. Off tank is more common and has a slightly better teamfight and can solo objectives better. Full damage has a better splitpush and 1v1 potential. If full damage see point 5 asap. 10.) The easiest way to beat him is in champ select. Build a bit of your comp with hard CC and some of his counters. Build a strong wombo combo teamfight comp and look to force early or mid game 5v5s. Pick Rammus. It's not very hard to do!

Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to try and use them. I think my biggest frustration with Udyr is that he can make me irrelevant early. Yi for example has a similar win rate and again almost no matchups with terrible win rates but I feel like I have a chance to get some levels, farm and make an impact. With Udyr, I often feel like I'm at the mercy of my team.

Since one of your recommendations is drafting a teamfight team, how's Amumu as a pick into him? I tried it once this patch and got stomped because I have no escape whenever he finds me and he just sits in my jungle with wards all game. I think he literally went Blue->Red->my jungle. I started bot side with a leash because I thought he would start Red since that's the common buff for jungers. I basically never got out of early game and it didn't help that my lanes weren't strong either so couldn't help me (probably wouldn't catch him anyway).

What do you personally find hardest to win vs?

Far prefer an Udyr in my games over Lee Sin or Xin Zhao who jump on you and chunk off half your health in a matter of seconds.

At least Udyr has to run into you and is easily peeled off.

You can also have your frontline build thornplate/execution and he melts pretty quick.

Yes, because you're laning and don't have to deal with him as much. That's a very narrow perspective. Udyr isn't a top tier ganker and that's not what makes him annoying.

Considering how gank-centric the meta is right now, I feel perfectly justified in expressing an opinion about junglers that I consider far more toxic than udyr.

Of course Udyr is annoying 1v1 early. Yet I don't go complaining to the boards when I get matched against an AP malphite mid cheese or my assassin gets counterpicked by a bruiser which means my mid lane is pretty much over unless I get babysat by my jg 24/7.

I mean Udyr level 2 gank with PTA over any sort of squishy like ADC is 100% easy kill if there no healing or flash

Not a single one with a better win rate vs Udyr, nope... Except...

Jarvan IV Kindred Hecarim Kha'zix Rengar Nidalee Pantheon Elise Rek'sai and on, and on, more than I care to list...

How long until these boards learn to stop using one source to try and prove everything? The world may never know.

Excuse me but this champion has not a single dash or flash in his kit.

By this metric he is INCREDIBLY WEAK and must be buffed. >:(

Dash or blink*. Flash is a summoner spell that is also classified as a blink.
