Question for all the one tricks out there - how did you pick your champ?

BlueBilberry··2 votes·1,998 views

Thinking of focusing on just one or two champs to focus on and hopefully improve my play. So here's the question for any one-trick champ players out there:

How did you make your choice? Did it actually help your game? And, lastly, if it did help, what have been some of the drawbacks of focussing on one champ?

Here we go again.

Learning how to play and understanding the gameplay patterns of varying champions can only help you. Do not pigeon hold yourself into a position where you can only comfortably play/perform well with one champion, especially now that** autofill **is a thing for all elos

Counterpicking and playing champions that have synergy with your team's other picks will help you climb faster than being a useless one trick pony, I guarantee you this. What don't people understand about this?

I understand what you are saying. And obviously, you are not an OTP. And obviously you regard yourself as being an expert on LoL. But that was not the point of the question.

I was more interested in the reason for their particular choices - play style, utility etc. - sort of like how a chess player chooses certain openings (as part of their repertoire). I didn't mind if whether they were bronze, silver, gold, platinum or even wood players. The question was not even addressed to how people "get gud" - which seems to be what you were implying.

Thanks for your input anyhow. :)

OTPs exist because of their power scaling and cool downs.

OTPs are easy to play, Easy to master, and easy to climb with.

Here's a funny story... one of my friends recommended I played this moba, but I didn't know which one. So I looked up the playable characters to see which interested me more, and when I saw broodmother I saw a literal spider, but when I saw elise I thought she was just some spiderman chick with no real spider qualities but theme.

I downloaded dota, my friend said "league dumbass" and then I went to league instead, decided to pick up elise cause why not, and she was so much fun for me to play, her kit was awesome as I could still be a spider, and her character quotes, lore, and everything about her from her animations and her appearance was just so yes..

So since I only played elise while leveling up, she become my most reliable and comfortable pick when I transitioned to normals as she can both carry and be very safe with her escape. She just felt satisfying and very reliable for me to play, never let me down unless I played poorly. However when I went into ranked, any other champion I tried to play I had little experience on, and just spammed elise cause mains > that 9th time kindred adc. Over time as I played ranked more, I got more stuck with elise being my only good champion I don't get nervous about picking.

So as I just spammed elise I embraced I sucked at anything else, and transitioned to being a one trick and never regretted it. However as time went on I began learning how to do more things properly, which expanded my champion pool and now today I'm more of a jack of all trades master a none but elise rather than an exclusive one trick elise.

So how'd I make my choice? I liked my champ's design, and had fun with her, and thus played her.

That makes a heck of a lot of sense. And thanks for giving me my chuckle for the day. (Good story.)

Simple answer for everyone in why they chose a champion, where you must ask yourself two questions

1-Do I find this champion fun?

2-Am i constantly useful on this champion?

A-You must have fun for this is a game, so if you are not having fun, no point in playing

B-You must feel useful, other wise how will you win?

Zed 300k on two accounts I felt zed fit my personality ( like the filthy weeb i am) and i have always been decent and wanted to be better at the 1v1. Zed is my all time favorite and making/watching zed outplays still brings me tingles. The main drawback i am having right now is that zed doesnt fit well in alot of team comps and he kinda is outclassed by other assassins that work better in comps ie: lb, talon. But he can still do well in the right hands.

I thought Irelia was trash until I got stomped by a 2k elo Irelia player. Tried her after and thought she was fun. That's basically it.

Veigar is and always has been my main regardless of who I play more.

I understand my champion inside and out, I know his weaknesses I know his strengths and I know what I can and can't do with him. Alot of people call Veigar a one trick champion but I disagree wholeheartedly. I've taught myself to play Veigar in middle and as a support, buying Sightstone and redemption because I'm not there to win the game myself I'm there to help my team with my stun all while having a large chunk of damage to peel assassins and other adcs off my own.

This may seem long winded but one-tricking is rarely a sign of good growth as a player. Pick a champ, learn them inside and out, understand your champs limits and what they excel at and you'll eventually start decimating your match-ups regardless if the enemy is your counter or not.

I picked with champions to main I enjoy playing.

Ahri A champion I'm who I main in mid lane mostly. I enjoy her ability to for out-play potentials and mobility. I'm currently learning to improve playing Ahri top and support more effectively since I can't always get mid. As I would like more chances to play my main champions more. So far, I'm getting good enough with Ahri that have 70% win rate with her in Norms so far.

As I mention I picked for the reason that I had the most fun with. But it really start out with my first game as Ahri during my leveling process was because that she was on the free list at the time. Made me wanted to play her more often, thus started to save IP for her. http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2077518933/230598164?tab=overview

Is the champion fun? Do you want to get better or is it just fun to mess around? Can you make the champion work for you or does it fit your playstyle?

I was trying to one-trick Yorick , but I got tired of my bot lane feeding non-stop and not knowing how to stall or push objectives and losing the game because of it, so now I am just going to main Support until Auto-fill goes away... Anyways I picked Yorick because he reminded me of Old Malzahar before that garbage rework. If a game has a necromancer class you better believe ima be it, i have always been drawn to minion horde classes/playstyles and Yorick does that better than anyone else in League.

That was why I wanted to play him.
Step 1 was actually playing him and finding him to be hilariously fun! God damn did i love those little mist walkers leaping at the enemy. Made me smile every time.

Step 2 was deciding whether I wanted to get better at him because as it stood i was having fun but i was doing terribly. After awhile I decided I was tired of losing on him and wanted to learn how to win, his strengths and weaknesses.

Step 3 This was tough because the recommended builds and rune/masteries were just not working for me. Then I started to experiment on different masteries and runes, with different items. My friend suggested Warlords and Death's Dance, so I tried it, fell in love with it and started building from there. I don't know if my build is the normal build for him, but i didn't look at any guides and it is what i came up with just by playing.

So thats kind of what you want to think about when you want to One-trick a champion. Don't really think about climbing in Ranked, think about if the champion is fun and if you actually want to learn the champion because you want to get better.

My boyfriend said I should download league as a fun game to play together during school as we were long distance for college. He said I would make a good supporter as I generally like to help others out without sealing the show. Soraka was free the week I happened to start playing league and I bought her when she was no longer free. After I played Soraka for several months (because I was uncomfortable learning new champs with completely new abilities) he suggested that I should use my saved up IP to try a new champion. I liked the heal on soraka, I felt like I could help out my teammates a lot with it. So the champion that was similar was Nami

I instantly fell in love with Nami. Just today I got over 800K points on her. (obviously would have more because I played her long before mastery points were a thing)

I also fell in love with her lore and overall design.

My advice would be to figure out what kind of skills you like on champions and find the one that has all of your favorite. Personality similarities with you and the champion is a huge plus that makes it easy to play the same champion over and over again.

Some drawbacks? I am a little uncomfortable playing other champs (working on it though). I try to pick champions besides my main in normal games so I can get some practice and hopefully get enough experience to take new champs to ranked. I also get super intimidated if the other team picks Nami. I feel like I have to outplay them because they took her from me. But I'm learning to outgrow that, and trying to predict what they will do.

Another drawback I just thought of, if your champion that you decide to main becomes meta you could experience bans. Also if they get a big nerf that could be devastating too. So far I've been lucky with Nami.

I pick Zilean as my one pony trick. In 10 days I got went from Silver 3 to Gold 3. Playing same champ helps to get a better feeling of prons and cons, the range of smartcast, synergy with other champs, counters etc. Never gets bored of playing him since he has a huge kit of movement manipulation. Also is a nice feeling when you can revive a MVP to finish off enemy team or constanty zone out enemy team by spamming bombs. I find out that Zilean alone can protect tower vs 3 opponent.

I one trick on my main account. For it it was more just loving the character, the lore, the skills, the overall experience when i blew my combo on a person. Also love the way it can push or solo multiple people even when slightly behind and making people say "WTF".

I want to one trick for ADC but with the role being so flip flop all the time people always have a new GOD LEVEL adc and constantly start picking or banning the ones i get real into.

XinZhao I picked him to one-trick because I hated playing ranged characters and really just wanted a melee character that could jump on people to attack them. He was free on the week I started playing, so I bought him with some of the 400 free RP Riot used to give out for new accounts. I have never regretted it.

I've had quite a few mains over the years (been playing since before Xin Zhao came out). Old Sion (AP and AD), FoN Singed, Old Skarner are just the few that stick out the most.

Now I main Darius and am picking up Renekton as a pocket substitute. This is mostly because, strange as it may sound, I like playing a lane bully, and having some form of CC and sustain is just too good to pass up.

Sometimes you find a champion that you find fun, even when losing.

I'm a Gnar main with a close second being Kennen. First I wound up playing mostly top lane because I really liked solo laning but my buddy who tought me played mid, so I got top. For me, Gnar was always one of the coolest champion concepts in the game I saw so I picked him up because his kit looked cool. As far as why it stuck, I quickly discovered that my play style worked best for team fighters who have solo kill pressure. There are few champions who fit that bill better than Gnar. Kennen does effectively the same thing just as a carry and not as a bruiser. Even further, I find that I'm good at engaging and finding fights/picks so having a champion with strings engage potential was a good move for me.

The challenge, of course, with any one trick is learning how to beat your counter matchups. For me that's Irelia, Yasuo, Jayce, Wukong and Kennen (at least right now). It takes some practice and some adjustments in how I play/build to make it work but if you're simply better on your champ then they are on theirs, you can outplay and win the lane.

I do agree with what someone else though that being a one trick is tough with the potential for bans/not getting your role. If you are truly thinking about going one trick, the best thing you can do is find a champion who can go in multiple roles who isn't God tier right now (although that changes all the time so that's tough). You also need to do research into the champion and see what it's weak into so you know what matchups you have to be more cautious in.
