How is it possible to hit gnars q max range?

So I am trying too pick up gnar and I cannot fine anything that explains how too increase the range of his q, instead of a little short throw. If you know how too do this I would really like the help with this

His Q loses distance once it hits a target (like minions), so odds are you are hitting creeps and its stopping it that way. I play a lot of Gnar, feel free to add me in game and I can help you learn.
