why was Trinity Force changed in the first place?

was it to open up item viability on more champions? i liked the former build since it would help scale into late game via zeal

edit; ALRIGHT IM SICK AND FUCKING TIRED OF PEOPLE WHO DOWN VOTE OR UP VOTE WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION WHY

Here is the Patch Notes info regarding the change: "As Sheen's offensive AD upgrade, Trinity Force promises mid-game dominance through double the Spellblade damage of its component item. By contrast, Iceborn Gauntlet is the upgrade for champions that can take advantage of its utility. That separation’s been a bit fuzzy this season, with many toplaners picking Iceborn to straight-up outduel their opponent. While this was partially due to Iceborn being overtuned, we also realized Trinity Force was suffering from a lack of focus.

The best Trinity Force users reliably proc Spellblade on cooldown - Jax, Irelia, and friends wield equal blends of abilities and basic attacks to deal damage. That combat pattern is key: it means Trinity Force users don't rely on hyperscaling basic attacks to fight enemy champions. With that in mind, Zeal is a marksman-shaped peg jammed into a fighter-shaped hole. It fits... just not perfectly. Stinger is better suited for the job: attacking faster and casting spells faster squares with the goal of maximizing Spellblade uptime. With new focus, Trinity Force is better than ever at fueling the mid game pain train for champs that want to play the Spellblade game"

jax not relying on hyperscaling basic attacks

Makes sense, Jax relies more on his Empower or third hit, not the direct strength of his AA.

Jax is mostly on-hits, so unless crit works with on-hit damage (which it doesn't, iirc), Jax would be better off with CDR instead of crit.

He doesn't

He doesn't build crit or armor pen

You're literally removing 2/4 multiplicatives

Ahristocats1 votes

then what are we complaining about? if it's better with cdr it's better

FalconPawwwwnch1 votes

I assumed you implied he hyperscaled with AAs, I took that to imply he preferred crit

So I simply said otherwise

Ahristocats1 votes

first armor penetration is a good combination with trinity force sheen proc on jax, i played multiple time black cleaver+triforce+sterak gage when jax wasn't garbage

second, crit can actually work depending the situation, item 3046 for instance for dueling power,

my brain remembers crit on triforce with jax and i don't remember that it used to be garbage cdr on triforce broke triforce for mutliple champions like hecarim, while not doing anything for jax

I know right, the new one just seems to scream "YAY JAX AND IRELIA SPIKE EVEN BETTER"

i try to make it work on kog'maw but i really don't need the extra 10% cdr

Why do people go Triforce on Kog? Isn't his base AD shit (he's ranged after all)? I mean, I guess he can proc it consistently if he spaces out his abilities, but he kinda wants to Q first and E to lock them down as he W's.

Oh right his ult. Nevermind.

his ult costs over 9000 mana though

To be fair, it was kinda riot's intent to push TF towards Bruisers. Champions who were designed to spike after 1 or 2 items.

Admittedly, it did kinda screw over some niche cases who benefit both from sheen proc and crit chance. (Corki, Gangplank, etc)

Not before the triforce rework.

To better bind it to the bruiser champions that typically bought it while also removing the RNG aspect of their fights. They consider high crit chance on fast auto attacking champions to be a relatively healthy type of combat because the number of crits across a few seconds of dps are fairly predictable, but a low crit chance on a champion that auto attacks only a few times means a fight can really easily swing one way or the other depending only on if the crit happens to proc.

But somehow Jhin is still considered one of the most balanced champions in League.

Variance isn't unbalanced, it's just not consistent.

health is not balance.

Why was trinity force changed in the first place? I mean, there were more fighters who used it originally than wierd ADCs. It also gave champions like yasuo and GP an extremely unhealthy powerspike.

Something you kidlets clearly dont know; Trinity force didnt have crit in the first place. It was added and then re-tuned to AD rather than hybrid, which made it a LOT less desireable on its original users. Its current state was it being CHANGED BACK to be desireable for its original users; Fighters and AD casters.

I thought it originally had AP stats? AP =/= CDR

It was like 30AP, 30AD, 20% attack speed, 250 mana, 250 health, 10% CDR, and 5% movement speed i think?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Was there an early iteration with CDR?

I recall Trinity Force having roughly:

  • 300 Health
  • 250 Mana
  • 30 AP
  • 30% Attack Speed
  • 10% Crit Chance
  • 8% MS

Yeah. The iteration before it didnt have crit chance at all... Because stinger had 10% CDR on it. The change made to it was that stinger was replaced with zeal.

Theres been three stable versions. Only the second stable version used zeal. The others used stinger.

Trinity Force started with Crit Chance when it was introduced

CDR was first introduced to the item in Patch 5.22 when they changed Sheen to have CDR rather than AP.

I don't see any mention of Stinger in the item's history until Patch 6.11

shrug Guess i was wrong? Doesnt really change the fact that trinity force wasnt a "crit item" originally, and when they made it a crit item it had next to 0 desirability on its intended users.

Well it was a crit item??? Because you know when they made the item it had crit. So it was originally a crit item.

... its second iteration was a crit item because the AD was increased, the AP was dropped, and the ciritcal strike chance was increased. The current iteration is a fighter item; attack speed and CDR.
