is there any ACTUAL purpose to giving Garen such absurd damage?

with just item 3044 in the early game he did stupid amounts to me as malphite at 197 armor, I think the problem here is letting his kit have a free black cleaver that can stack with the actual black cleaver. (their stacking goes separate but add up into a combined total)

but why did they give him such a stupid amount of damage? this just seems unfair when he also has a way to reduce damage, shake off slows and just heals fucking stupid amounts just by avoiding combat for a few moments, I get he's meant to be for beginners but geez, he's almost as bad as MasterYi, for beginners but ridiculously strong

Correct. Garen does have a kit for him to be used to fight against other players.

If garen doesn't do damage, then he is just an armor shred and mini silence...

I haven't even played him once so I have no bias in his favor...

I think I know why. He’s a been recipient of buffs that artificially make him viable.

By that, I mean the game has evolved around Garen a LOT in the last few years and so they’ve got him ‘roided out via numbers to ensure he’s playable. Other champions who have received straight numbers buffs (and possibly other changes) to survive the evolving game:

Nasus Dr. Mundo Vayne Singed in 2017 (I believe they walked back on some of it after the passive rework) Lux

Singed's biggest change was just his glue trap is now a grounded + slow effect instead of just slow, really he's not much different beyond that, Lux should never have gotten that ult cooldown refund, while idk wtf they did to vayne and mundo

Garen's last buffs were three months ago. The patch the buff hit on Garen had less than 50% win rate, and during the next patch his win rate went down further. Then patch 8.11 hit, and everything hit the fan, and Garen's win rate started to rise.

Not really the sort of result you get from being "'roided out".
