Just let us pick what we want, It won't take long. I really want the old runes back. That would be really interesting in combination with these runes.

The adaptive force is a long time problem for me because it keeps on giving me early stats I do not want. The old styled runes would solve that problem easily and I can also change the laning phase to my own playstyle and liking, which I miss.

the only problem with the old rune system was the fact it was gated behind account level and IP cost. instead of just removing that and leaving the runes as is, the screwed the pooch with runes reforged which has lead to a balance nightmare.

You're kinda half-missing the point of the Runes system. The pure and simple stats are only half the story, the ones from the Keystones and Minor rune choices are typically just a form of extra stats meant to influence your playstyle. What's the difference between AS runes and Lethal Tempo? Lethal Tempo only works against Champions (or procs off champions) instead of 24/7.

Riot messed up horribly introducing Runes Reforged. Like, I can't fathom how they thought this system, which ruined WoW, would be good for League. They should have never listened to the person who introduced it.

It also doesn't help that the new stat shards so massively favor offense in an already damage-centric meta.

How about instead of an "offensive" "defensive" and "flex" path, set up a Major rune, a Minor rune, and Scaling rune? It would still allow for the kind of flexibility of the old rune system without the minutia of a 0.8 difference in armor to eek out a level 1 trade.

So you could have like

Major runes 8 armor, 9 MR, 50 health, 10% AS, 9 adaptive force, 3% Move Speed so celerity can be replaced with something useful on more than 2 champions, 5% bonus starting mana/energy just so Shen doesn't get left out like he does from the flat energy boost on the new PoM

Minor runes 4 Armor, 5 MR, 25 health, 4% AS, 4 adaptive force, 5% CDR

Scaling runes 1-17 armor, 1-18 MR, 4-80 health, 1-10% AS, 1-13 adaptive force, 12.5% bonus critical strike damage, 1-10% CDR

I took into account the (basically) universal 8 AD and 9 Armor increases to base stats from pre-season 8 as well as the removal of mpen to negate MR runes. The end result for builds should be around the equivalent of taking the remaining open runes (half a red, 6-9 blues based on the stat, and quintessences)

The result is (if going for, say, full AD) starting at the equivalent value as taking a full page of flat runes of that stat, and ending with taking the combination of strongest flats and strongest scaling runes together.

For CDR, I went with the "5 flat and 10 scaling" approach that was common for midlane mages like Orianna, and threw in couple other fun missing runes like crit damage for Caitlyn Ashe Jhin Shaco Tryndamere Yasuo Fiora Senna and anyone else I'm forgetting that has unique interactions with crits and crit chance. No 1% critical strike chance though, sorry grifters looking for randomly trades level 1 for no reason; you'll have to keep picking Tryndamere for that.

Is anything significant missing from here (taking into account that yellows and 8.5/9 reds are locked from the season 8 changes)? I know things like gold, health and mana regen, and respawn timing are still missing, but those weren't exactly vital to a unique playstyle like move speed or crit damage are.

I was fine with old rune system. it was more balanced than now.atm with runes is just shitshow where half champs are op and others are useless

When you look at it objectively, most of the stuff you used to get in old runes you can get in the new runes or stat shards. The only stats you can't get anymore are:

  • Crit Chance

  • Crit Damage

  • Bonus Energy Regen

  • Bonus Experience

Honestly when did you ever use these stats in the old rune system? Maybe for some cheesy 1% crit or bonus xp for early level 2, but otherwise you used the same basic pages 99% of the time.

Old runes + Jungle = nightmare until you hit 20's or higher. Some champs couldn't even hope to clear without a good page.

I think people were more ticked-off by the fact that runes used to cost IP, and how people were sort of pigeonholed into buying page bundles with RP--lest they slowly accrue them with IP (which was a huge disadvantage for solo-laners and junglers in particular, given the growing number of champions in the game & the bigger incentive for playing a broader pool of champions), rather than the meat-and-potatoes of it. For a long time, the weekly free-champion pool was also quite small in proportion to how many champs were being added to the game, and being a new player & having to familiarize oneself with all these new characters & kits while being gated by IP-paywalled systems contributed a lot to the daunting new-player experience that so many players had to dredge through.

I also liked the pre-Runes Reforged system a lot more. There were things about it that were pretty unfair (how much mileage certain already-good champions got from stuff like movespeed/spellvamp quints & arpen/magic pen stuff) but, overall, it suited every need of every champion to some extent whereas the new system has more resemblance to Masteries, which often felt like a dysfunctional mish-mash. You could often get pretty creative with your rune pages as well, in the context of trying to shut people down with an unexpectedly tanky or bursty loadout, which I liked a lot.

I wish we could go back to it as well, or at least some iteration of it :(
