Vision Reduction: Why is it so rare?

Graves and Nocturne presently are the only Champions who can reduce your vision radius via Smoke Screen and Paranoia, respectively. It's a very powerful mechanic against ranged carries and target mages like Ryze.

However, the mechanic seems not to have been explored by newer Champions in the roster. I'd like to know why that is.

Braum and Yasuo are the only ones with projectile-blocking, Trynd and Kayle are the only ones with absolute immunity to damage, Sivir and Nocturne are the only ones with one-time spell shields.

It's just a matter of uniqueness. I think Riot employees would rather create champs with more diverse abilities than re-hash abilities that are already pretty common.

Tryn doesn't have immunity to damage, he just can't go below 1 health

Omnipherious3 votes

Doesn't that technically mean he's immune to damage while at 1 hp?

C9 Squeeky 4 votes

That makes Tryn immune to death, not immune to damage.

Omnipherious1 votes

But... he's immune to death because he's immune to damage at 1 hp -.-

From a programming perspective, perhaps, but his R tool-tip says, "Tryndamere instantly receives Fury and becomes **immune to death **for 5 seconds during which his health cannot fall below 1."

Drunk Old Man1 votes

Yes, but that also implies that he's immune to all damage greater than zero. =)

No, trynd will still take the damage but his health won't drop. I believe that the main difference would be that you could life steal off of a tryndamere at 1 health but you couldn't against an ulted Kayle. Haven't tested that out but it makes sense.

I suppose it comes down to the definition of "immunity" we're using in this thread, then. I'm referring to definitive immunity, but I think you guys are referring to the status effect of "immunity" in the game, which is unique to Kayle's ultimate and Zhonya's active if I recall right.

Skencer1 votes

Interestingly enough trynd isn't actually immune to death. If you jump the enemy nexus then the super turret will kill you even with your ult active. it's quite lame.

Drunk Old Man1 votes

I have tested that. I think for a while Kayle ult didn't save you from that either, but I believe it does now?

You won't life steal off of him once he reaches 1 health, he literally becomes immune to damage that will put him under 1 health.

Sort of, he does regen passively still and I've yet to run into a tryn that didn't have some kind of life steal. You still will but its not going to be anywhere near before.

You fail to mention poppy :)

Poppy's R gives immunity only to champs she hasn't targeted, so she doesn't really fit the description.

ganon00701 votes

yes but its still closer to kayle's (talking about immunity) as it also blocks cc, where tryndamere's ult does not

Big Fake Tits1 votes

neither does kayles

That's more along the lines of, say...

if (attacker != targetOfUltimate) {     return 0; // Void damage; }

=)

I would like to point out how hard it is to play against that.

It works for Nocturne because he has to be up close and personal to hurt you anyway. This means that the vision reduction is isolating you, but it isn't outright taking away your ability to fight back.

It works for Graves because he is both an ADC, the class that is naturally the squishiest in the game, and has a play style that generally wants him to get up close and personal. When you take both of these factors into consideration, Graves has to offer just as much in return to the opponent for that vision reduction.

What it probably should never work on is a siege/long range mage. All that causes is that you can't see them while they poke you down presumably outside of your vision. You can't use your targeted spells on them for obvious reasons and it's ineffective to use skill shots because you're so prone to missing at that point.

It's entirely possible vision reduction may be introduced again in the future, however you really need to realize that the niches it can be allowed into the game while still being healthy from a balance point of view are few and far between, and both Nocturne and Graves are already taking 2 of these niches.

Short-range supports could have it.

The same reason why only Teemo and Quinn have blinds to make a champion special in there own way

MarhsallLee672 votes

Similar to Blind, Block/Dodge, and projectile-blocking walls, if the vision reduction mechanic was made available to more champions, it would become a serious problem. Imagine going up against a team where every single one of them could reduce your vision in some way or another.

same reason why only Teemo and Quinn have blinds to make a champion special and make reasons to play that certain champion

Omnipherious1 votes

Simple Answer The mechanic isn't explored a lot because it runs the risk of becoming a very big problem.

Long Answer Let's use mobility as an example. Dashes and MS steroids didn't use to be 'normal' or 'required' for certain types of champions. Even so, many of the popular/common picks have mobility as some part of their kit. If a champion does not have mobility, they better have CC. If they don't have either, they better be so good at something else that neither of those matter.

Miscellaneous Mobility replaced hard CC as the thing that isn't necessary for a team but so useful that you're probably better off picking someone that has it anyway. Look at this timeline http://timeline.leagueoflegends.com/. Start taking note from Xin Zhao onwards. Look for all the things that are relatively common in today's picks - steroids, knock-ups/backs, dashes, sustain, %HP damage, etc.

They put them into Doom Bots as a possible passive.

I think they ended up disliking the mechanic on Graves, and the global vision deny is super iconic of Nocturne.

I think they have maybe one more way to work the mechanic in, which would probably be in the Teemo rework in which it removes the targets vision for a few seconds, but the problem is either

A) It's way too good - You can't fight back, you just take abuse and fumble around (total vision denial even on stuff attacking you) B) It's way too useless - You see what's hitting you, you just fight back.

Graves Smokescreen have the ability to move out of it, and Nocturne is only map and ally vision denial.

A targeted vision denial would be A or B. If it was B, you could only use it when running away, if it was A it has no counterplay.

Anywho, this is probably why they haven't put it on anymore champions.
