Patch 5.16 Solo lane Mordekaiser feedback thread

Malicious Metal··45 votes·10,440 views

I woke up early in the morning around 6 and after patching dove straight into the undertaking that was Mordekaiser top lane. And.... he isn't half as bad as people made him out to be in fact he's actually pretty darn fun to play BUT... We all know what comes after the dreaded BUT (Hehe, he said butt) and you're right, there are a few things that irk me and make me want to bash my computer with a spiked mace but moving on to the subject and ultimate goal of this thread: Give constructive Feedback for SoloKaiser!

Gameplay: Morde's still Morde. He's still got that cold, heavy metal core and his new playstlye kinda fits him. He's this hulking Murdermachine coming for yo all. He gets kited easily and once he gets focused down he's easily dispatched but those were olde Morde's weaknesses at the time as well. So what changed about his gameplay in Top Lane?

1.** He's a far better duellist!** People underestimate the damage this guy can inflict with his mace of spades, which is now the ACE he got up his sleeve(Hehe. Puns..) His Mace isn't just for show anymore and actually hurst like a Motherfucker. His E shield gain per champion hit also cements him in the Juggernaut category, being one hell of a threat in melee range but falling short when dealing with pesky, cowardly marksmen and mages

2.** His Waveclear's weaker** Remember old Morde castrating minion waves with a single Q/E combo? That's a thing of the past in solo lanes but down bot his waveclear's as great as it was before, which leads me to the adamant opinion that He needs to get access to Harvester of Sorrow in solo lanes. The heal's great in bot, where, as much as it makes me question my own believes, actually manages to go toe to toe with the other marksmen down there while still being kinda fun.

  1. DOVAHKIN Even from top lane his dragon presence's still great. If he decides to roam down mid and bot he easily manages to snatch a dragon clone and his DPS on dragon is phenomenal with his improved Q. The Dragon's a bit clunky though and inhibits him from using his ult defensively for the heal and shield gain.

  2. Build: I absolutely adore the new build options, usually rushing a Rylais straight into a Trinity force and then going all bruiser-y with SV, Zhonyas and even a Deathcap. The trinity force's sheen effect makes hi duelling even stronger and he gets really fast with the movement speed. Disregarding spellvamp's an option and it finally isn't a necessity anymore, removing the awkward feeling you got from bulding the bloody thing.

  3. Teamfighting, teamfighting: Morde's become one hell of a beast in teamfights where his allies provide him with all the cc he needs to succeed. His strong point's definitely late game skirmishes where he shines with his damage and tankyness.

Conclusion: Give SoloKaiser his W and we're sold RIOT!

~M.M, a hopeful Mordekaiser main.

EDIT!: Just played 15+ games with the new Mordekaiser and can safely say that he fulfills the vision of being a heavy metal Juggernaut. During Teamfights you don't even need to worry about getting to the backline, just destroy everything unlucky enough to stand in your way be it tank or squishy alike. Morde's a steamroller and the enemy team's asphalt. His lategame packs one hell of a puch and he's able to simply mow through enemy ranks. => I even managed to get a penta in my last game as Mordekaiser simply by smacking away at the enemies, not a care in the world while shredding them on the spot! THIS IS MORDEKAISER!

Heck, now you may think it's a perfect rework but it ain't that simple. His early laning as top lane Morde is really tricky to pull off if the enemy's not melee and his waveclear is kinda bad atm without his W to help him. Heck,** give him his W** and he'll be able to jungle as well. Making him truly a Metal conqueror, master of all lanes and Overlord of the rift.

Mordekaiser now holds the lofty distinction of having the strongest single attack in the game (scalings wise), clocking in at 666% (you read that right) of his AD in damage. 100% of his AD + 250% from infinity edge + 46% from crit damage runes + 270% from Q

EDIT: Well at least in a world where my math isn't wrong it's actually 566. I don't know where I got that extra 100. I guess I wanted to believe they gave him potentially 666% damage on purpose

BUt your math is based on theory. 20% crit chance doesn't make an abiltiy scaling double. That's not how math works.

Crett7 votes

what? morde's third hit does 270% of his ad as bonus damage. that + an ie crit and runes is 566%. the ability's damage isnt affected by crit at all. it's just added up

Personwithhat2 votes

One of THE most broken abilities of all time.

Does insane damage, now gets an OP pet dragon, etc.

and people want BUFFS?

Morde was hell to lane against before with his !@#$ spell-vamp.

Now he's even worse.....

You do realize there's actual counterplea involved when dealing with Mordekaiser? Also, this isn't a BUFF. It's a QoL for his solo lane since it won't really affect his team fighting, duo lane and general damage output :P

He out-sustains most laners once he gets his hex.

And now he does 566% damage with ONE ability.

So balanced, right?

New Morde doesn't even get spell vamp anymore. Besides, he didn't outsustain his opponents but rather out shield them since the spell vamp only mitigated the health cost, the stat on it own being only one third as effective on AoE

Destínum1 votes

Sorry to burst your bubble, but only the bonus damage is multiplied. Therefore, the max AD % he will do with one hit is 370. It's still a shitload, but not quite as insane.

Crett1 votes

I know that. The bonus damage is factoring in Infinity Edge's bonus. It is 566% AD, but about half of that AD isn't from Q

Destínum1 votes

What, you're saying the bonus damage can crit? Because I am 99.99% sure it can't, unless a red post has stated otherwise.

Crett1 votes

I'm saying it CAN'T crit. It's just an autoattack bonus, so the damage also factors in the base attack itself, which is where I'm getting the crit 292% thing from. (increased by crit damage runes)

Destínum1 votes

Ah, alright. I guess crit runes are a thing.

Except its 3 auto attacks... So over 3 attacks vayne could have crit 2 times and on the 3rd proc'd her W dealing over 3000 damage...

exactly, actually in most teamfights where your team is not steamrolling the other team, youll be dead even before you hit the Q 3 times

What irks me the most is that when Lee sin mains qq'd about his wardhopping removal it was kept "because of the overwhelming player feedback" but when Morde mains said they don't want to duo lane and for the love of god let Morde solo, he gets shoved into a duo lane anyway, and is probably the most gimped champion ever if he wants to try something else than his intended purpose of duolaning.

Has obviously never played Soraka. She can use her W for killing herself and nothing else. At least Morde's W doesn't take away a percentage of his HP each time he uses it.

How ironic. The Paladin of Pain's heal is not only free but also heals an ally while still being FREE.

I actually play Soraka with my sexy Reaper soraka, and let's be real here, if you're going solo lane Soraka you're going for that banana terror with AD and not AP Soraka.

And my point actually still stands, getting W makes Soraka heal off of Q hits so it's not a total waste (though it's kind of a one point wonder on solo raka)

Played various top games with him. Here's my feeback:

  1. He has less starting health and kills himself more quickly by casting spells.
  2. He get's kited by melee champions.
  3. His shield drops too fast. Is almost a nonfactor during early trades.
  4. Lifesteal on him is a waste of time. Spellvamp is still decent considering his Q counts as spell and not AA.
  5. Overall his scaling feels really messy and rushing Rylai takes a while and slows your build.
  6. He feels decent by mid game and lackluster at late.
  7. Overall, the experience has been like predicted and highly unsatisfying.

Played two games at bot and he felt really weak and boring.

This version is nowhere as fun or strong as the old one. He is just a really inconsistent powerhouse that easily gets behind when not stealing or getting kills for that matter. Time to find me another fun champion or start playing other mobas.

Mind you, my definition of fun is not playing the same op champion that everybody is using. More like taking underplayed and underrated champions and make them shine.

I will be content when they give back his W and admit that the Dragon ghost is a one map gimmick. A strong one map gimmick that can get a penta, but a gimmick all the same. sure I'm not getting range on his Q nor am I likely going to get that 3rd Q outside of teamfights and minions, but the E works enough to give him some kind of safety. I don't see him getting many kills during laning phase and honestly I still think he'd make a better support than an adc (even more so with his Xp passive). In the end, I believe riot did fail in what they intended (they just added ADC and a position he can go... if you really want), but he didn't get assassinated in the process.

Well the changes are pret-ty decent in themselves, adding some power while pushing him into the Juggernaut direction BUT practically forcing him bot is a really bad thing. He already gets a lot of benefits from going bot, namely being near dragon, having a support to help him early, having a buddy to escape ganks easier and the added w passive to outlevel the enemies. Making his W such a situational ability is a flawed concept and should be tweaked accordingly to add power to his solo lane while leaving going Bot a viable option. All about that #Diversity, y know? I feel like a damn preacher, repeating myself over and over, being adamant about the fact that we should get out Harvester of Sorrow.

And yeah, Drake's really gimmicky, especially in those kind of moments where you go "Fuck, I'd rather would have had my ultimate there than the damn dragon clone..."

They could make it so he can steal a super minion on Dominion!

maybe he could run off the map for 5 seconds and comes back with his dragon ghost. lets see you capture THAT turrent. Gangplank: mord, their all coming for your turret, you want some help? Mordekaiser: Na, I just hit lvl 6, I'm good. DRAGON, TO ME!!

Alright I apologize for I haven't taken the time to read all of the comments but I'll leave my feedback here as a Morde main who has been with him for the whole ride since season 1 and has hundreds of games on this champion. Hopefully I am not being too redundant with what other people have said.

First things first I hate these changes. Second things second I am 200% salty about these changes. Third things third I apologize for ranting but I am so tilted right now (there is a TLDR at the bottom).

I'll start with what I'm not upset about:

New Dragon is the coolest thing ever. New dragon passive gives amazing drag control. Change to Q was sooooooooooo good. New item build paths are awesome and offer lots of versatility.

Now I'll start with all of my problems:

Morde still gets kited very easily and unless your team gets crazy engage or your opponents are bad. Even if he makes up for this in late game by being so tanky you can't kite him anymore, the items you have to build to get him to be that tanky means your damage is low so when you reach the mid/back line you don't do a whole lot and you have no cc to make your suicide run worth it (as opposed to champions like Ryze or Olaf, who get tanky late game and bring tons of damage and cc to the mid/back line)

Extremely easy to abuse at level 1-2 by anyone with range even if you have an engage support and you almost are guaranteed to give up early lane pressure, making your passive not nearly as effective because you are too zoned out to get cs, and usually allowing your opponents to get a quick level 2 and force you off the wave even more.

and the big one:

I'm a solo lane main, I play mid/top. I don't like bot and I don't want to go bot. I also don't feel like learning a whole load of new matchups in order to properly lane bot with Morde, and I don't want to swap my main lanes just for 1 champion even with as much as I love him. You have now taken my main champion, and made him unusable in my main lanes, more or less nerfing me directly as a player. You could give Morde infinite damage on all of his abilities and I would still be upset about you taking my favorite champion out of my favorite lane.

You can argue all you want about how his new kit has lots of damage and doesn't need the w to win solo lane but it isn't true. Again with my example you could give him infinite damage on his abilities but he will still never win lane against a good azir or xerath or several other champions who when played well will never give you a chance to get close or charge up 3 whole hits of your Q. Also without W his jungling becomes so bad that even if you can successfully clear camps you'll never be as fast as reksai or grags or elise or any other of several picks who will simply be better alternatives.

Side note:

Can anyone at Rito who worked on new Morde give me proof that they have rank 5 mastery with him? Because every high elo Morde main I know is very upset about these changes and I want to know if any actual Morde mains were consulted before his whole kit was changed, because I imagine many of them would have taken issue with this immediatly.

TLDR: I play Morde a lot. I play Morde at high elo. I have played the new Morde. I have played against the new Morde. When people know what they are doing it is easy to shut down the new Morde kit. Even when Morde gets strong in the late game other champions do the same thing and are stronger/better at it. (Except the Dragon, that thing is seriously awesome, but it's not enough to compensate for his exploitable weaknesses)

TayIcknay1 votes

It's almost like some champions are more viable than the others.

Big Lincoln3 votes

would rather not have the dragon tbh, waste of power budget and just a bigger "win more" mechanic

but damn, all I want is to be able to use W when i don't have someone fused into my back

They already said the dragon doesn't really affect his power budget IIRC. Idk how that works.

Agreed! Let his solo lane have 4/4 abilities. Even if it's severely nerfed without an ally it will be much better than not having an ability.

It's already functioning way better with an ally nearby by default. The damage's not that high anyways on its own but in conjunction with the shroud latched unto your ally it deals DOUBLE damage, making it great in team fights and in duo lanes. There's literally no reason at all to give SoloKaiser his W back :9

I'm confused on what to start in a solo lane so i just went amp tome, probably a meh choice but it still worked and i did good

Du Ma Mi2 votes

The problem with giving him his W to self-cast (In Riot's eyes) is that he deals a lot of damage with it now (Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's quite a bit more). IMO, his damage when self cast (without an allied champion) should just be toned down, so that you still have decent waveclear, and a small heal, and it keeps your shield up for longer, but you can't just outduel a Darius at level 4 because you feel like it.

Silverthane1 votes

i did expect and predict that he would be a better top laner because the Q power is very strong and it would give him better dueling potential. however in mid lane i would expect him to take a greater hit since most champions are ranged or have better mobility and cc than him. bot lane i have no idea but ill take your word for it.

if you don't mind me asking are you a where you a mordekaiser main? and what is your build for top and what is your build for bot. Also which supports do synergize best with morde? also read spell vamp isnt required anymore? i was thinking of still building it but when i played him on PBE i noticed the heal i was getting was mediocre with the Q procs compared to what i got with old morde not to mention the shield gain as well.

I was/still am a Mordekaiser main and this will most likely never change at all. As for the build I utilize now after the rework; I rush Rylais and then build straight into a Trinity force since he synergises extremely well with the rage and spell blade passive. From there you can either build full tank, full damage or bruiser, the latter being my favored option. Spirit visage for the MR/Health/CDR and the increased healing from his ultimate and then a Zhonyas since it's just such a great item. My last game where I just so happen to get a pentakill with the HueKaiser I didn't build my usual Deathcap but went into a Guardian Angel. I consider SV, Rylais, Trinity and Zhonyas core to my personal build but the sixth item is situational. Need more UMF, get the cap. Second shot? Guardian. They have a lot of Ad damage dealers? Randuins or Dead man's plate.

And yeah, Mid's scorched earth for Morde. Works well bot and to some extent top, both build generally the same; tanky AP

I was getting this impression when I was testing him in Bots. He's too slow to dodge ranged harass and his E damage... basically doesn't exist anymore.

Which is a shame, because I've always built him as full AP burst mid.
