Well, I would say ward a lot, but also try to take a guess where the enemy jungler is. Always be wary of at least one pre-6, if they're a heavy engage like Lee or Hecarim, chances are they'll gank sooner so be ready to protect your carry in those cases. Caution pings help if the enemy isn't acting right like they go sudden offensive or defensive.
If you manage to kill your lane, push out then try to roam mid if you can. Otherwise try to drop a sneaky control ward. My thought process has always been a game of Conquest when it comes to map control. Pretty much try to "secure" areas to allow your teammates any advantage such as dropping a stealth on the enemy red/blue depending on the side, keeping dragon warded, or even clearing out another.
Check your map constantly, even if it isn't your lane, try to take a read on what might be going on. If you see mid disappear, chances might be good they'll be coming to gank. Bot lane missing along with mid, check on dragon. Support is missing, counter rotate them. After laning phase, you should always keep an eye on the carry and peel/protect them as needed. Again, it's a game of conquest so if you see an opportunity to run up to top lane, take it.
Be sure to always keep an eye on your carry even if you walk 5 feet to ward that bush (you'd be surprised how often my carry will have this idea they can 2v1 easily without me). Try to weigh fights before they happen, can you save some people or will it cost too much? If you can be sure that you can get the lot of them with only a death or two, then that would help a lot.
I play a some Leona and she's great at engages, disengages, along with utility. I suggest you give her a try, an amazing Leona can quite literally lock down an entire team while peeling for the carry. It'll teach you about what's a good fight and how best to approach a situation as you'll be the one going headfirst into the fight.
