Is there any reason to get Rod of Ages over Hextech GLP-800?
20 extra AP after a delay and a bit of extra HP/mana doesn't really make up for the active.

I think the only champions who would get Rod over GLP are the ones who want Protobelt since stacking Hextech items is bad returns.
Sol used to run Rod until GLP came out. Now it's very poor to get Rod which is a shame. It just doesn't offer enough.
Agreed. It needs to be a stupidly-strong item for that stat-stick nature to actually be worthwhile, but Riot's afraid of that sort of thing causing power creep.
As such, maybe RoA should be removed because it crowds GLP's space.
Which is a shame because in longer fights Sol still has a mana problem but you actually don't have room for any other mana items in your build. Sol suffers from having a fairly strict build. GLP, Swifties, and Rylais are all mandatory. But you also need spell pen, and a lot of it because he has poor scalings, so you need both Void Staff and Liandrys to do any kind of decent damage, but at that point you have one item to choose and more often than not it's Ludens because you want more move speed. His theme is interesting but there is a reason Riot wanted to rework him less than a year after he came out.
Roa needs to be stronger and have its old passive back that restored health and mana every time you leveled. It's just bad now.
Or GLP-800 needs an AP nerf.
Hextech GLP-800 would be find if it was reduced to 60 or 70 AP from 80.
How many champions even build GLP-800 besides Aurelion Sol?
At a quick glance on op.gg, all the Catalyst mids besides Sol build RoA.
Even Kassadin, who you'd think would appreciate adding another 35% AP active to his rotation.
