So mages are better better assassins than assassins and comparable supports to supports...

This simply isn't true.

Mages that have assassin levels of damage still aren't assassins, but even if they were those mages wouldn't be supports.

When you complain about mages being assassins you have a few types: Like leblanc, who is actually an assassin. Like Syndra, who isn't an assassin because while her damage is better she has no reliable way to apply it unless you just walk in to her range. Like ahri, who isn't an assassin because she can't 100-0 a squishy that's a level behind her and has no mr unless she's extremely fed (i.e. she lacks the damage to 100-0 in one combo, she either needs to be ahead, needs you sub-60%, or needs to use two or more spell rotations meaning it's not an assassination given that's at least a 5 second cooldown between). Note that no one would call any of these supports - people will typically tilt if you try these.

When you complain about supports you have a few types : Annie who's weird, but may sort of be both. She's flexible. Still very immobile though. Although tibbers is busted Like brand/zyra who aren't really supports so much as a second apc with sufficient base damage to bully a duo Lane without gold (these guys clearly aren't assassins though) Like Lulu/Lux who have plenty of supportive spells and transition to damage if wanted - but again clearly aren't assassins.

So who exactly is both an assassin and a support? My list is 1 long - Annie, and only when she has flash up.

Some correction for your statements. In the client you can go into the champions tab.

Ahri Mage Secondary: Assassin

U cant say she isnt an assassin, Riot says she is at least to one degree or other. 100-0 in one dive isnt what makes an assassin. Its a combination of burst, and mobility (or stealth) that makes a character count as an assassin.

Its why certain marksmen are counted too.

Tristana Vayne Twitch Marksman Secondary: Assassin

Well sure, but if you want to take that approach then the argument is trivial: Is there any champion with the combination: Mage, Assassin, Support?

Clearly there isn't, because Riot only lists two roles.

Now, as to Ahri specifically: These definitions haven't been changed for ages. Pre 5.2 Ahri WAS an assassin, hence that title. Her charm gave 20% damage amplification and allowed her to 100-0 squishy targets. Post 5.2 Ahri is no longer an assassin by definition. She can be built like one (at least when ahead), but nonetheless she's no longer an assassin but "an ultra-mobile kite mage."

As Riot said themselves in patch 5.2 notes: "Fantastic Ms. Ahri's success as a support-killing, pick-making assassin has always been tied very closely with Deathfire Grasp. With the item gone, however, it became obvious that Ahri's unique role in the game was losing focus, so we set out with the goal of moving her back to her original vision as an ultra-mobile kite mage. Technical improvements and updates to Fox-Fire and Spirit Rush should make her feel smoother to play, while Orb of Deception's new mobility effect allows her to both outwit opponents in close duels or remain elusive as she repositions in a fight."

As to your definition of assassin, you're largely right. They need the ability to 100-0 though. No one would play an assassin if all they could do is 100 - 10 their victims; they need to be able to finish them. I mean, even though an assassin by definition has the mobility / stealth to get in and out, they are still taking a risk by going in that they will get locked down and killed. Why take that risk if the reward doesn't measure up?

Taken from the "assassin" wiki: "An assassin is an agile champion that specializes in killing or disabling high value targets. Focused on infiltration, deception, and mobility, assassins are opportunistic hunters who find favorable moments within a fight before jumping into the fray. Regardless of the size of the enemy team, assassins specialize in positioning and artful killing. They strike when the time is right – no sooner, no later."

My definition of assassin at least is the ability to 100-0 a squishy paired with the ability to get in and out despite other non-squishy enemies nearby (if the squishy slightly mispositions, etc...). Most "mage assassins" that the OP is complaining about lack the latter point (ability to get in and out), while some miss the former. I suppose I'm missing the disabling part, but with the amount of lifesteal on ADCs I don't think you can disable one unless you kill it...

I like a lot of your points, and its true that Ahri did lose a fair bit with the damage amp removal. She did get some AP scaling and base damage buffs, and her Q MS buff for compensation. Still laning against her vs say a Talon or Zed? You people are going to act like Ahri doesnt have a poke, poke, poke GAP CLOSING ALL IN! play pattern like them? Really? If Zed or Talon are behind, they 100-10 a target... I guess that means theyre not assassins if they fall behind.

Anyway, nice points, but we have to be careful with having our "own definitions" as to what stuff is. That just leads to "LALALA I CANT HEAR YOU" moments in discussions.

Greetings Summoners!

Back in the end of September, we announced The Nine Tails Fox much to the excitement of our community. Well the time has finally come and after much anticipation, we wanted to reveal the gameplay style for Ahri, the Nine-Tailed Fox.

Ahri Ahri's gameplay style revolves around mobility and managing position to aim her spells. When played properly, Ahri darts around teamfights, picking off wounded stragglers and harrying soft enemies.

This is largely accomplished through her Spirit Rush ultimate, which allows her to dash multiple times before going on cooldown. Ahri can either use all three quickly to chase, burst, or escape, or she can spread out their uses to keep enemies guessing and juke around the battlefield. Combining this with her high magic damage and her Charm ability to lock enemies down, she can strike from unexpected angles or bait enemies into over-committing to disadvantageous situations.

Ahri's major gameplay decisions are based on her assessment of risk/reward. Her burst is high, but must be in short range to maximize it. This creates a dynamic that requires her to endanger herself to reach full potential. Play it safe and have more light damage, or commit and go for the kill? Use your dash for damage, or save it for escape? The choices are constant with these opposed strengths and weaknesses.

Her kit is really designed to appeal towards opportunistic players who prefer characters with a lot of action, and especially players that like to lull enemies into overconfidence, only to capitalize and punish them. Ahri's dangerous, seductive nature is something we're happy to deliver for players who like to toy with their enemies before destroying them.

I know what the wiki says for assassins, and Ahri plays like an assassin. She has every trait, all the assassin hallmarks. Yeah her damage took a hit, but they replaced it with a truckload of mobility. If shes so much of a kite mage, why does it feel like a kite that is trying to catch up with you to kill you!? Hashtag: Murder Kite (in theaters this summer). Like an assassin, when she decides its time to go in, she does so with damage dealing-gap-closers like Talon and Zed. Looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, albeit a slightly less muscular duck, still pretty ducky... Im going with duck... an assassin duck... note to Rito, new champ needs to be an anthropomorphic assassin duck.

Well if all that didnt sway anyone, and the addition of assassin ducks wasnt slightly funny, then Im done. You guys can take your "ultra mobile kite mage" and have it. Im not calling her an assassin just cause of the label in the client, but also because her playstyle hasnt changed that much.

I have to agree with pretty much everything you said sans 1 point: "You people are going to act like Ahri doesnt have a poke, poke, poke GAP CLOSING ALL IN! play pattern"

That's EXACTLY what she does. And it's why I don't think she's an assassin like the others. Ahri needs to poke poke poke first. Since when does a Talon or Zed poke the enemy ADC a few times before going all in? Never. Ahri has the ability to do it. Maybe that makes her an assassin, she's able to get targets down low enough before going all in.

I think Ahri CAN be played like an assassin. You CAN build her for lots of burst with item 3285 item 3152 item 3089 item 3020 item 3100 item 3135 . Most players prefer to build her like item 3165 item 3285 item 3020 item 3089 item 3135 item 3157 (I just looked that up, I expected the last item to be item 3116 but I guess the nerfs stopped that). She doesn't quite have the burst there then, not enough AP or item actives with AP ratios to get her there.

Regardless though, she still could be defined an assassin. I guess the point then comes down to "when's the last time someone has seen an Ahri support played seriously?". I personally build item 3116 on her and play her like a kite mage though - that is until I'm 6/0 and start assassinating people with the lead.

The tag system used in the client is outdated. Riot is using a new classification system now and Ahri falls under the Burst Mage subclass, not Assassin.

mage is also about the biggest class, because you know, mage is a very generalized term.

Everyone can burst harder than assassins right now. Fighters can burst harder than assassins while being tankier and also with more CC.

SpongebobIsLife3 votes

This is the current issue with assassins. Along with the fact that if they get behind, what do they have? Nothing. What do mages have ? CC and utility to set up their team. There's just no reason to pick any assassin mid lane.

Arakadia2 votes

Katarina and LB aren't in a bad spot. And Fizz, while not strong without ult, has his bs ult hitbox which makes him too stronk with it.

2Charmnot2Charm1 votes

But still if leblanc and kat screws up what can they offer to the team other than damage?

Leblanc has two snares so i guess thats something.

Their wave clear when defending their towers is also risky to do since they have to be inside the minion wave to do it, while mages can clear the minions from a safe distance, so unless your team has waveclear from the adc or top lane role good luck.

CR Q lasts for less than a second.

Veigar is more mobile than him for over 75%, considering base movement speed and Luden's.

Over Innsmouth2 votes

I'd argue Syndra is more mobile in a pseudo sense, given that she can cast a lot of her stuff without pausing to stop moving and that makes her remarkably slippery.

Erm, Katarina and Leblanc are assassins, no mages. And I wouldn't call Cassiopeia, Vladimir and Viktor mobile just because they have a ms boost....

That would be the same like saying DrMundo Garen Trundle Udyr ShyvanaVolibear are mobile and they are juggernauts.... immobility is their weakness.

TheCharmingCharm4 votes

Last time i checked, Katarina and Leblanc were assassins, not mages :3 Not to mentionCassiopeia is the opposite of mobile.... even though she gets movement speed with level she's still extremely immobile.

Danjeng1 votes

Cassiopeia isn't that slow. 400 base MS is as fast as Pantheon with T2 boots. Her spammable Q also gives a pretty big 50% MS boost. That's some Ryze level shit. She's no Master Yi, but she is not the "opposite of mobile". Far from it. She's actually quicker than majority of other mages (I think she's a battle mage is why, but I'm not sure about classification).

Extremely slow would be Anivia

Arakadia1 votes

Blue square really does need ms buffs, its not even funny.

TheCharmingCharm1 votes

Even if she's not exactly slow, I still wouldn't call her mobile. MS buffs doesn't really make champions mobile, she still has no escapes, and a simple slow is enough to catch and kill her.

IKR Syndra Lux Velkoz Ziggs Annie Cassiopeia are mages BUT they can kill you FASTER (AND SAFER) than assassins AND they don't even need to get close like Rengar Talon Katarina .

Orangesilk2 votes

To be fair, Cass isn't really safe, her range is short. I mean not short enough to be in direct danger from melee champions, but short enough that OTHER mages can nuke her before she can hit them.

Balance.

Arakadia1 votes

Cass can kill you faster than an assassin? Thats complete bull. Even Koz and Ziggs are going to have a hard time bursting you.

Additionally, all the mages you listed are extremely immobile, even zigg's mobility is his only hard CC and is unreliable, and are skill shot reliant, except annie. None of the mage, except Annie, are able to easily land their damage reliably like old Talon, Rengar, Leblanc, etc.

And your for some reason getting upset over the fact that burst mages are bursting you.

Overall, your forgetting how someone like Rengar can take a dragon, and a Syndra can't, and how Rengar is much more reliable and slippery than someone like Koz.

PokladnicaZla1 votes

It's funny because most of those mages can be dealt easier if you buy boots. They actually are immobile (aside from Zigg's case) and most of them actually have skillshoots.

I think you need to make a more fleshed-out argument. Sure, mages are strong, but why? They're designed to always be relevant. I sure as hell don't feel op when I'm playing vel-koz, but I never feel useless. If you just nerf him into the ground then he will either lose his carry potential or lose his utility and actually become useless. What do you think should be done? Which mages specifically?

Irelia Bot1 votes

I don't have too the game does it for me.

Adriqnohee1 votes

There is no support class, there is just champions that go bot with the ADCs/Ziggs.

Arakadia1 votes

I don't think that this is because mages are true strong. I think its because SOME mages work too well as a support such as Brand, and most assassins aren't in a good spot. Also, damage creep.

Slazll1 votes

Well couple big problems main 3 unbalanced champs/positions eh eh jungle, very linear map progression cause it's clearly best to gank bot every game easiest turret dragon and the most kills for ganks, and finally the very linear build paths for most mid laners, adcs and supports atm. I recommended only adc items cause that's really the only class Ik enough about to theorize items for without being completely broken, but it's clear we need more item variation in mid and support as well. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/UA1YhFzw-adc-possible-fixs
