Why does Gnar have percentage health damage?

U4fyn2vZzW··51 votes·8,713 views

He already has some amazing AD scalings and safe poke, can kite really well, has more cc then most tanks and then completely ruin your day in his mega form, does he really need percentage health damage in the form of magic damage ? And to add icing to the already overpowered cake, he's resourceless.

He would be way more bearable if he couldn't just destroy you regardless of if you tried to counter build him.

Thinking of building armor? Lol screw you.

Thinking of building health? Nope

Thinking of just going straight damage? Good luck, most Gnar's have realized you can go full tank on him and still outdamage most top laners with your poke and base damages.

After he's done zoning you from farm with his resourceless poke and putting you on the defensive, he transforms into his Mega Form and continues to zone you even more with tank stats and his ultimate.

Gnar, unsurprisingly because Riot's balance team has special needs, can also do a tank's job far better then what was intended for him which was to be a tanky AD brusier .

** There's no reason to pick a competent Nautilus/Shen/Sejuani over a competent Gnar, they both have the same functions except Gnar does it better in everyway. Nevermind his amazing base damages and scalings, but the fact that he gets so many free stats and can deal monstrous damage in his "tank" form with just a trinity force. We have a champion that was intended to be a top lane bruiser that can build all tank with just maybe ONE damage item (Normally Trinity Force, which gives good tank stats) and still outclass multiple tanks in every way with his superior cc, amazing damage, amazing mobility, epic engage, mixed damage, versatile kit.**

I remember when Riot's balance team talked about how bad it was for champs to have 3 damage types in their kit. At the time, they were talking about Darius and Irelia, who have a lot of physical damage, but also some magic damage. not a lot of magic damage, but enough. Then they also have true damage. They said that this was bad, and a major design flaw; both champs have seen many nerfs since then.

Here's the thing: Since then, Riot has released many champs with the whole "multiple damage types" that makes it impossible to build defenses against. At least vs Irelia you can build health and armor, mainly item 3110 item 3143 and item 3082 for the attack speed slows. Against Darius, you can stack armor and health, and while less effective because of his passive Armor pen, it still lessens his damage.

But these new champs, mainly the newest 2, Kalista and Gnar, are impossible to build defenses against. Never mind their kits in general, which many consider to be overloaded, but just in regards to their damage. They are both ranged AD building AA reliant champs. They have AD scaling skills which deal considerable damage, and their AA's do a lot of physical damage too. So you should build armor and health to counter their damage right? Wrong. Because someone thought that it would be great to give them %max health magic damage procs in their kit. And not low proc damage either. Its freaking 20%. So now, to build defenses against these champs, you have to build Armor, MR and Health, and have enough of all of them to get to effective health levels because they are going to be building damage early (or all game in the case of kalista)

Its horrible design by design, Riot gives 0 fucks about power creep, they will talk about one thing in regards to older champs and then put it in the kits of newer champs and defend its existence. The level of double-standard is hilarious

You do know that if Mini-Gnar didn't have percentage health damage, he'd be useless. He would have to build full damage and not be a bruiser which will make his Mega-Gnar useless too because then he wouldn't be able to jump into the front-lines of a team fight.

I played against a good Renekton yesterday as Gnar and could never proc the 3rd attack on him, and I did no damage what-so-ever. Mini-Gnar needs it, especially since his Boomerang CD was increased on all levels.

the Anarchit3cht5 votes

Basically this. If you're letting Gnar get 3 AAs(or 2 + boomerang) on you the problem isn't with Gnar. It's with you. I played against a Darius and much the same thing. I'd only ever get 2 stacks on him before he'd walk out of range or pull me in. I mean, when I managed to get my stacks on him I would potentially be able to beat him, but considering he knew not to let that happen--or if he was going to he'd have to out trade me--he did pretty well. Either he backed off and let it expire or he pulled me in for a boat load of damage. The funny thing is that if you jump away all it really does is put you at perfect range for his spin. He might have to take a few steps but when he has applied his slow that's not asking much.

The % health on Gnar is only "OP" on people who let him continuously apply it. To give an example, one of my first times playing Gnar I fought a Nidalee. I'd get my 3 stacks on her repeatedly until she was dead. The one time she killed me? When she didn't let me get my stacks on her. I didn't get my MS boost, I didn't deal any particularly great amount of damage to her(I was building tankier for team fights) and she was able to outmaneuver me and kill me despite my lead. Granted, I was diving her and that's why she killed me--but I came out successfully the first 5 times I did that because I managed to get my stacks. Without them, even with being so far ahead, I lost the fight.

You don't need to be the biggest lane bully ever designed. GNAR IS RANGED. You can farm under turret safely and stall for late game if you had to. Meanwhile Renekton won't be nearly as good lategame, and he can't farm under turret as safely because he will be poked to death unless his jungler helps him. Why does Gnar have to be god-tier at every stage off the game? So many champions top lane fall off at some point like Garen . Or have a weak early game like Nasus. Many have problems escaping ganks, and are kited to death Darius. WHY DOES GNAR NEED TO ALWAYS BE GOOD AT EVERY STAGE OF THE GAME? Its as if people think Gnar would be worthless if he weren't a lane bully. Is being a mobile, tanky, safe laner/pick, resourceless, and CC monster not good enough for you? Gnar has to be a lane bully to?

No there is no reason for this. Its absurd, outlandish, and far from the realms of balanced.

meatjunjun3 votes

He has these tools because the transformation from his mini to mega is not 100% controllable. It's not the same as Nasus's ult where Gnar can choose exactly when he wants to turn. To remedy this, good mini-Gnar players will try to keep his meter as close to 100 as possible without reaching it. Reversely, good players will not engage at this point or will run away and wait until Gnar goes back to 0.

Have you watched the LCS these past two weekends? The teams against Gnar never initiated while he was mega. But initiated during the seconds when he goes back to Mini and can't gain rage bar anymore. This is Gnar's MAJOR weakness which the good players/teams will exploit and will usually win the team fight.

Now if you cry and go, "but I should be able to jump in and fight whenever I please", then that's all on you.

Here is the thing about gnar, he is the squishiest champion in mini form. I feel like people don't capitalize on this enough, or just play somebody that can't play against poke altogether. Any champion that can jump on his face and ruin his day in mini form wins, such as Irelia JarvanIV Pantheon. However, there aren't enough champs in the top lane than can do this.

Even though he is countered by those kinds of picks, I still think his kit is overloaded with %health damage on nearly everything, free stats, crazy scalings etc. I feel like the best way to nerf him is to either reduce the scalings and the %health damage altogether, maybe even take some base damage off of his late game spells and put it on the lousy 5 base damage on his q. That way he would get some compensation for these nerfs.

U4fyn2vZzW4 votes

That would be all fine and dandy, if he couldn't just slow you with his Q and either just walk away or E away.

Grouchy Poro5 votes

Slow means nothing if the enemy is already on top of you and has layed down some cc like they would if they were smart. Honestly, yes, Gnar is good at countering champions who cacan't preform reliable engage combos but those that can stomp his fuzzy face. Riven shits on Gnar as can anyone who can bully then zone.

U4fyn2vZzW6 votes

You named Riven, want a biscuit?

What about immobile top laners? You know like Shen, Olaf, etc.

These are the type of champions that Gnar gives hell in lane, they can't do anything to him, they get destroyed, end of story.

As for Riven, I've played against many Riven's as Gnar and I've yet to lose lane. Whenever she goes on him he can easily just E away, if she's zoning him from farm he can use his long range Q to lasthit, and if he rushes Sunfire/Randuins she cannot do anything to him. He has more then enough CC to handle Riven when she goes in, but most Gnar's insist to rush damage instead of tank.

Teemo is similar to Gnar in many ways.

  • They both have annoying poke.
  • They both destroy melee champions.
  • They both have magic damage.

The difference? Gnar can dash away for no cost.

Listen, all I'm trying to say is to counter Gnar a large portion of it is play style. The Missing Link will shit on anyone if they let him, and some champions can't avoid being shat on, but he does have obvious counters. Yes he has percent hp damage but at the cost of needing to use auto attacks which will often have him in a position to get jumped on right up until late game. He's like any adc really; he'll shred your face off but only if you put yourself in a position he can do so in. You talked in your original post like he was immune to being touched. IF you're chasing yes he has perma slow but he only has one dash and if you can get him after that he's toast.

First off if there was an obvious counter to Gnar it would be used in competitive play. Instead people pick the obvious Rumble MaokaiSion and Irelia then hope for the best. Second off you basically stated "yeah if you don't have a gap closer you auto lose". Sorry people like to play Garen Udyr Darius etc. Finally you pretend Gnar is squishy! Sorry but when he has over 300 armor and 3300 HP even as little Gnar he is FAR from squishy. Well that's late game sure, what about in lane? He walks under tower and you wasted your time, and possibly summoners spells. Hell you can pick champions with gapclosers like Tryndamere and he still would kite you silly.

All i'm hearing from you is pickRiven and cheese bad Gnars who build damage in lane. Great advice... against free week Gnars!

Yes i am complaining about a champion design being a poor design choice in the first place. 10 points to Gryffindor for understanding the obvious. Furthermore are we not allowed to complain or criticize poor design choices? Of course we are. If Riot designs a champion who's passive negated all physical damage dealt, should we just accept it? No that's preposterous. If that's the case return Jax to his beta state, because that's "what he was meant to be". Lets buff Irelia back to her original numbers too... after all she was "meant to be that way".

He already got a nerf to his boomerang CD. Now it's 45% on all ranks and won't reach 60% until you max his Ult. This makes his early game a lot harder for him to proc his 3rd attack.

Also, aside from his %health proc, he does no damage in Mini-Gnar form, and that's the only thing that gives him the strength to fight. You take that away, you'll force him to build full offense, and this will make his Mega-Gnar useless inadvertently. Because if he doesn't build defensive items, he won't be able to jump into the front lines of a team fight.

Anddddddd what else does he have? His Q does a max of 125 (+ 115% AD). His E does a max of 180 (+ 6% maximum health). To compare him with another champion, Sion, who has a 140 (+ 14% maximum health) and a 300 (+ 180% AD). Without W's proc damage, mini gnar isn't doing literally anything except being very slightly annoying (like Teemo, except without any of the traps, or strong DoT, or dueling power). Percentage health means Mini Gnar is a viable threat if he can autoattack you 3 times, which means when he's mini form you can't completely ignore him.

Altricad20 votes

Sion has an quick dash that extends over 700 range now? That's new.

Gnar definitely doesn't need his % damage to be MAGIC. It's bullsh*t, it's like giving Teemo a gapcloser. Right now, teemo is balanced by the fact that gapclosing champions can beat him, and gnar is literally teemo v2 in lane. Now with un-itemisable stats and good teamfight utility.

I'd be happy to see him nerfed to oblivion since he invalidates the whole class of bruisers like a certain blind monk LeeSin

but i'll settle with his % damage being changed to PHYSICAL

reyjkl1 votes

Nobody messes with mega Gnar. Hes just too tanky and can pack a punch vs squishies. If little Gnar was buffed it would ruin LCS gameplay.

OyddAWqJ5r4 votes

His poke does minuscule damage unless the W is procced. His W is really the only thing that does damage besides his Mega-Gnar combo. His cooldowns are also extremely long early game and his range is extremely short.

But if they took % damage away they'd give him more base damage/scaling in compensation--which in turn turns into his endless Q poke doing more damage and being the obvious option over going in and landing 2 more 425 ranged basic attacks. Also squishies would become more susceptable to Gnar. Overall it's a buff. % health is more balanced for Gnar's role than higher flat damage. And besides, if he is focusing the tank/bruiser then that means the tank/bruiser is effectively performing their job of keeping more dps off the squishies--which has become their main role in the meta where mids and adcs melt everything near instantly. Those 2-3 seconds of tanking really do change fights.

doubleguac5 votes

His poke deals 125 (+1.15 AD) damage. Even factoring in its low cooldown, that's a neglible amount of damage past the 15 minute mark.

His only other active ability in mini gnar form is a jump.

He also has one of the lowest base AD values in the game.

Mini Gnar's entire power budget is loaded into his W. It is pretty much all he has, aside from a modest slow. If you seriously nerf his W, you are left with an incredibly squishy champion who has no burst whatsoever, deals low sustained DPS, and has only a modest slow in terms of team utility.

His W is strong because it is all mini gnar brings to the table.

Gnar was designed to be a combination of two champions who have obvious strengths and weaknesses. Mega Gnar has tons of AoE CC, deals surprising burst, and is extremely tanky. Mini Gnar is incredibly squishy, but kites well and deals high sustained single target damage on account of his W.

If hyperactive was seriously nerfed, Gnar would turn into a champion with a borderline useless base form, who would always try to transform as fast as possible in every situation.

BTW, I'm not saying Gnar doesn't deserve nerfs. I'm just answering the question you pose in the title. Mini Gnar has % health damage because sustained single target DPS is pretty much all he brings to the table. Virtually his entire power budget is loaded into his W--the rest of his kit in mini form just serves to help him stay alive and kite while applying hyperactive stacks.

As a Gnar main (I have over one hundred games on him, just not all in ranked) I can say that his kit can be overloaded at times.

For instance, with just a Bork and Randuins I managed to 1v1 the enemy Cait without going mega.

But let's go over the pros and cons with Gnaruh!

Pros:

  • Slow on Q
  • %-based damage
  • Movespeed with the % damage
  • A short range hop that gets bigger if he hits something
  • Another slow on Q (Mega)
  • An AoE stun
  • An AoE knockback and potentially a stun
  • Lots of free stats from his passive in Mega form

Cons:

  • Weak lanephase if enemy has any skill in dodging/standing behind creeps
  • His hop can be averted with CC
  • Hop is on a long CD, capitalize on it
  • He dies super fast if building damage (especially in mini)
  • He does next to no damage if he builds full tank
  • His utility is all dependant on his Mega form, smart people know not to fight him in Mega and to engage afterwards or when his rage is low
  • His only real strenght is teamfighting with Rage so he can go Mega, a splitpush comp or a pick comp that can avoid fights renders most of his kit useless

It's not about what he has, that he has free stats and whatnot, it's how you adapt to the situation. If you're a tanky toplaner you're sure to pick up some MR on the way for their mid anyway (or Corki) and you, as a tank, will more often than not get Mercs for CC reduction (his two stuns) and it also gives a shunk of MR.

Yes, when he is in Mega he does a tanks job really damn well, but outside of the 15 seconds of uncontrollable mega he has no utility for his team and barely any damage. If his rage-bar is yellow, disengage. If his rage-bar is white/not filled in at all, you can engage as long as his carries die before he builds up his rage.

There are several ways to counterplay Gnar. Lanephase is just one stage of the game and once lanephase is over it's all up to the two teams to utilize whatever they've got to their fullest potentiall.

The thing about gnar is he isnt as oppressive as he may seem in the early levels, or before he builds any resistances honestly. Laning against a gnar from my experiences at least is kinda like laning against a teemo. He can dish out absurd damage if you let him poke you with free harass. If you try to fight back you can actually win. That being said though it can be incredibly easy for him to bait you into a fight where his jungler can just end up ganging on you and he gets the kill from a distance. My suggestion, dont use a champ against gnar that cannot respond to his auto attack poke. His AA range isnt that good, and you can successfully shut down a gnar with melee champs. I've done so with Irelia, fiora and panth to name a few. Champs like Riven, Lissandra, Swain, and Kassadin can also bite back and potentially win as well. You can fight back a gnar with a lot in a 1v1 tbh, it's just a matter of you knowing your own champions limits you choose to use.

doubleguac2 votes

Hyperactive is incredibly strong because virtually all of mini gnar's power is loaded into that one passive.

Mini gnar has no ultimate, and no active W.

He has two active abilities: a jump with completely negligible damage, and a low cooldown skill shot slow with low damage.

Boomerang throw deals 125 +1.15 AD. Even factoring in its low cooldown, that's a pitiful amount of damage past the 15 minute mark. For most of the game, boomerang throw's base damage is pretty much neglible--from a DPS perspective, all that really matters is that it adds a stack of hyperactive.

Mini gnar also has one of the lowest base AD values in the game.

Gnar was designed to have unique strengths and trade-offs in each form. Mega Gnar has tons of CC and tankiness, and surprising AoE burst. Mini Gnar is incredibly squishy but is very good at kiting, and deals high sustained single target damage because of his W. If you take away his high single target sustained DPS, he has nothing left.

I agree that hyperactive is incredibly strong, but it's also pretty much all he has, outside of a slow. His W eats 90% of his power budget in mini form. Aside from his W, mini gnar is an incredibly squishy champion with terrible damage and a modest slow.

The whole point of Gnar's design is to combine two unique champions who excel in different areas. Nerfing hyperactive would completely violate that design: it would turn gnar into a champion with an incredibly crappy base form who is always trying to transform as fast as possible into mega gnar.

JESUSSAYSNO2 votes

Coming from a Nasus main, Gnar is really not a big deal. Start cloth 5 pots, watch your hyper stacks (which get applied by his boomerang as well as right clicks), as that's really his only damage source that will do anything to you. This applies to any melee toplaner. Gnar is fine. His CC and mobility though, they're what make him strong.

Manage yours and Gnar's range, determine when to go in for cs and when to stay back and lets hyper stacks drop. They don't last long. After my first back, I wait for Mega Gnar to trigger, then go in for trading and potentially all in, as he's stuck in melee range with minimal mobility. At this point, at least as Nasus, I have a solid amount of damage and a solid amount of armor. Any strong duelist can use this strategy and absolutely destroy Gnar. Darius, Irelia, Nasus, Riven, Fiora, and just about any strong sustained damagers can 1v1 Gnar easily by building and playing smart.

Orangesilk2 votes

Because fuck Chogath.

Mindworm Jim2 votes

Honestly, I just consider Gnar to BE a tank. He has tons of CC, can initiate very well, gets free durability while in Mega form, and his damage is high enough that you can't ignore it but lower than pretty much anyone who isn't a support or another tank (unless he gets really fed, but you could say that about anyone). Presumably his higher-than-average damage and strong mobility are rewards for the nature of his transformation. With that in mind, I think it's kind of nice to have a tank that can go top lane, rather than being forced into the jungle or bottom lane because tanks traditionally have weak laning.

That said, I suspect Gnar is still a bit overtuned. And there's the awkward part where HE forces other tanks out of the lane.

Kobila20002 votes

Because when we conclude that ranged top lanes are something everyone hates playing against, the logical thing to do is make a tank/ranged hybrid who doesn't use mana.

SlimyDan1 votes

I don't think he's that bad. I once played against him as Malphite and found if I just farm lane and let him harass then he wins but if I actually engaged on him in mini form I would beat him, unfortunately we still lost the game but I think since his boomerang only deals damage to you once you can actually try to harass him after he throws it which puts it on a hefty cooldown if he has to back off rather than catch it. Then again perhaps the reason I didn't get my ass kicked was becuase the Gnar may not have been very good.
