Riot can we talk about Poppy?

Okay riot, as someone who was looking forward to the poppy rework and dreading it, I've got a few questions about this final form.

  1. The shield passive doesn't seem like poppy at all. Yes she bashes people with her shield, but never chucked it around like Captain Yordle America. What's the reasoning behind it? Also the minigame does not seem like fun ATM.
  2. Where's the AP scaling on her? Why did it go?
  3. Hammer Shock seems to be more powerful now with the slow. You know someone is going to try ER/TF poppy and spam it right? Also, why no AD scaling on the % health damage? Is this for jungle poppy's ganks or support poppy?
  4. It looks like her old passive was moved into her W, but we are going to miss the ramping AD buff.
  5. Her E is still her E.
  6. I have a guess about her ult. It was the best thing you guys could come up with to cause chaos on the enemy team without giving her 80% godmode.
  7. Is riot fine if people still build damage items on her? Is that going to get nerfed into the ground? Is she going to be allowed to go damage like people like doing on her?

The AP scaling on Poppy's kit was a relic of season 1 champion design where almost ALL abilities scaled with AP (that's the reason AP Yi, AP Tryndamere and AP Tristana were a thing for as long as they were). Poppy was never MEANT to be a friggin' MAGE, she's a fighter through and through- the only reason she was ever played as one was because she was designed in an earlier time. There's no way Riot would create a physical melee bruiser with AP scaling NOW (unless they were designed as a clearly "magical/magitek type" like Ekko), so why would they preserve it on a remake?

She wasn't a mage, but she used to go with a gunblade-trinity force build sometimes. I guess she was more of a hybrid in practical terms than a number of champs.

No, she was build straight AP with Rabadons to get the maximum possible amount of burst out of her R>E>Q combo, or she was played as a straight bruiser with Triforce. She was NEVER played Hybrid with Gunblade.

  1. she had a shild before now she used it to fight
  2. her w
  3. 6% appied twice is alot? 4.we have a mastery and item 3124 for that
  4. yea so? it's a good ability
  5. what?
  6. her ult has .9 scailing and her pasive scailes off heath i think a juggernaut biuld would be most optimal

They're making her into a bruiser/tank, so they're giving her high base damages, sustain, and a little safety.

By the same token, they don't give a shit about giving her AP ratios anymore, because that was the old Poppy.

I can't imagine people building more than one damage item (TF, most likely) on her, because she has a tank's kit now.

The thing is, a lot of people who played poppy loved her as a little assassin of impending doom. It's the "she's a tank now" I think riot is kind of screwing up for her fans.

The thing is, a lot of her fans loved the most toxic kit in the game, so sucks to be them.

Agreed. What part of Poppy's design screams "assassin" to you? It was misuse of a champion's kit, the same as AP Sion (for the longest time Poppy's partner as the OTHER "worst-designed kit in the game"), which Riot cut completely without remorse. Sion's fans didn't complain (the Sion remake is arguably the most popular Riot ever did) so I can trust them to remove AP assassin Poppy.

I'm not a Rioteer but here's my two cents on your questions..

  1. I did find the passive a bit strange. But its better then nothing since they moved her old passive to her W.

  2. Poppy had a lot of identity issues before her rework. Her kit was jam packed full of everything, AD, AP, tankness, % damage, you name it, it had it, the organized chaos somehow worked out for her though and it blended together to make her avery strong late game monster, but it also meant Poppy could utilize almost any lane and roll with the verity of items she could pick up because her kit allowed it. The removal of the AP on her kit allows her to have a more defined role and identity.

  3. Her Q is a hit and miss in my opinion. I personally find it to be a little weak and looking at the boards most players think it needs a bit of tweeking. Its a good concept, it just needs to be refined a little more.

  4. The honestly falls back to my answer for number 2. Old Poppy often had a playstyle to be played like an Assassin. I know it sounds strange but its true. Her ult almost always guaranteed a win for a team fight, by ulting the support or the weakest enemy team member she could focus on removing the damage dealers from team fights. Like the ADC for example. Her W gave her a burst of speed and power which allowed her to chase down and assassinate those who tried to flee. Having such a mechanic now wouldn't really suit her IMO.

  5. Yes it. If its not broke, don't fix it. Vayne has the exact same mechanic on her condemn.

  6. Her ult is certainly an interesting mechanic. Could be an amazing disengage or a powerful engage. Could also be used for some interesting plays.

  7. I personally build her as a mix of AD and tank and it works rather well. item 3748 item 3071 and item 3053 i find work well. But her core items from before item 3078 and item 3153 won't really benefit her anymore.

Just my opinion anyway.

Well, the other side of that coin is that Poppy was one of 3 or 4 champs who could really build as the game needed them to. If I picked Poppy and no one on my team had much damage I could go assassin. If we were all AD, I could go AP. If everyone else was squishy, I could be a tank. If we had no one who could get to the enemy backline and deal with the hypercarry I could go ghost+flash. If we needed a hypercarry, I just needed my team to live long enough so I can get 4 items.

I would argue it wasn't that she had an identity issue, it's that she was protean.

Her Q is a hit and miss in my opinion. I personally find it to be a little weak and looking at the boards most players think it needs a bit of tweeking. Its a good concept, it just needs to be refined a little more.

Yeah, it gained utility, but it was nerfed against single targets it looks like.

That's not a coincidence. Riot had poppy defined as a tank-assassin. Her assassin build was more common and frankly more fun. I think she needs to be a diver champ like Irelia or Vi, but we'll see if riot agrees with that.
