With the mage item update, mages are FAR too tanky when building full damage.

Mages has a lot of different item choices now. They can build all sorts of hybrid stats.

But they still have base stats balanced towards the old, inferior item system.

This means they have base stats WAY higher than any other class of champions compared to their intended items - a Fizz or Diana without a single item granting HP still has a lot more base health than, say, Master Yi or Talon - assassins of the opposite stat class.

HP =/= Tanky

Only 2 solid mage items have actual defensive stats.

  • Armor = item 3157
  • MR = item 3102

Giving mages 300-400 hp over 2-3 items isn't bad at all.

Mages don’t have a support protecting them 24/7 and don’t do as much damage as adcs, they deserve to be a bit tanky.

Why do they deserve it when assassins and even bruisers dont?

AD champions actually have to opt into defensive items to survive more than one second in a fight. Mages have so absurdly high HP scaling they can completely go without any items that increase their maximum health and still have more max health than any AD champion.

The reason this is unfair is because mages have these items: item 3157, already the most valuable defensive active effect in the game, on top of a solid chunk of defenses, a large damage boost and cooldown reduction OR item 3102 the most valuable defensive passive effect in the game, on top of a decent damage boost and cooldown reduction.

Assassins, bruisers and juggernauts? They have item 3156. That's the only item to be compared.

And even then, they need to increase their maximum HP through items because their HP scaling is much, much lower than any mage.

What is one of two key items for any AD mid/top laner? item 3071, an item specifically designed for bruisers. An item that gives the same kind of stats any of the two mage items i mentioned above gives, except at a much higher price, a much less efficient build path and with no real defensive benefits over the flat health.

Sure, tanks and bruisers have item 3748, but there are only an extremely selective number of champions that can effectively buy this item without being extremely far ahead and still be useful until they get another item or two.

But that's besides the point. This is not about "AD champions having little build choice" but "why is it okay for mages to get away with building whatever the heck they want because they get all the necessary defensive stats anyway"?

Of course, the league playerbase is riddled with mage players. Nobody is going to care about this for another month or two, until the game enters a mage meta.

Watch and see. Soon more people will realize just how absurdly unbalanced mages have become with the mage item buff, and we'll start seeing 3-4 mage team comps that still easily win games.

I agree. Items for mages are ridiculously OP compared to items for AD champs. Mages can have over 3K hp and like 800+ AP while AD champs can either have high HP and low AD or high AD and low HP. Mages have 4 or more items that give them 300+ HP and a shit ton of AP, while the AD items give you a nice amount of HP and a close-to-useless amount of AD (BC, Titanic, Steraks, Mallet- none of these items give more than 40 AD, while mages' items give them over 60 AP).
