There's a dislike function on Youtube? I don't think I've used it in like 5 years. Well then, time to dislike. Riot could've handled this much better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzHrjOMfHPY 300,000 likes. 7,000 dislikes.

Clearly this means people dislike the video because "Biased sample selection".

A biased sample collection doesn't mean that the results imply the opposite of what they say, it simply means the results don't mean anything useful.

I feel like it's a collection of people who pay attention to the game's updates. These are the people whose opinions count.

Your feelings on this matter are not useful.

Then neither are yours dumbass. Sorry to say, but your speculation on what may or may not be a "biased" sample is irrelevant. It is in fact a "collection of people who pay attention to the game's updates. These are the people whose opinions count."

But my speculation is based on the actual definition of bias as it relates to statistics. I have not made an appeal to my feelings in this thread. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_(statistics)

The like/dislike bar is not a valid sample of player opinions, nor is it a valid sample of the opinions of "people who pay attention to the game's updates."

Jalkan1 votes

No, the people whose opinions count are all the people who play the game.

Vistha Kai4 votes

Opinions of those who don't voice them, don't count, because they refuse to make them count.

Or do we acknowledge "playing" as "agreeing to everything developers do"?

Jalkan1 votes

They do since Riot is a business. The more players there are, the more people paying they are, and the more money Riot makes. Since a business' ultimate goal is to make money, all the players' opinions count.

DeathBurst1 votes

Well, simply put, no. If Riot manages to satisfy a majority of player enough so that they continue to play and spend money, that's all that counts. If Riot manages to understand how to satisfy these players even though they don't participate on the boards/pay attention to update, it doesn't matter that they don't participate.

What tricks you into thinking that is that, most of the time, it's easier to understand what people want when they tell it to you, and most of the time, people who pay attention have more insightful feedback to give. But "most of the time" is not always true, and if Riot manages to satisfy a silent majority, no matter how the achieve this feat, they still win.

Note that's a big if, and I'm not saying they have actually managed that. But when you say that the group that matters is the vocal group, that's not true.

The video clearly discusses issues and future plans with Dynamic Queue. 66%+ of players interested in the game are at disagreement with Riot's vision. How is it biased?

Because the sample consists of people who watched this video who opted in to select like or dislike. In no way does that accurately represent the players, especially when 96% of the watchers chose not to opt in to expressing their opinion.

You want the sample to come from an even distribution across the population (the population being players of LoL) and you want a very high number of the potential sample to actually respond with their opinion.

The Deckowner8 votes

That statement is already false, majority of the players don't even play ranked, their opinion shouldn't even be considered since they aren't affected by it.

Even among players who pay enough attention to watch this video, this is completely useless as a sample since only 4% chose to respond with their opinion. A 96% margin of error is absurd.

4% Like/Dislike on a Youtube video is super high end. Compare that to A New Dawn, same channel, 28,890,652 views, 377,304 likes, 7,414 dislikes. Only 1.3% of people who viewed A New Dawn liked or disliked it. Your maths is also off, 5.8% of viewers have left an opinion, over 4 times higher than A New Dawn.

All your "A New Dawn" example shows is that the like/dislike bar is useless. It doesn't establish any kind of standard for what a "poorly-received" youtube video looks like.

Learn what "bias" means in statistics.

This is a standard the ENTIRE scientific world is held to. Every study in every field is expected to use as good a sample as possible with as little bias as possible and online polls within online communities have been shown over and over again to be exceptionally bad.

LatetotheRace1 votes

Well sorry to break it to you bud, but this is the best sample the community has access to. Riot won't share the actual data, so I think this is valid.

"no better option" doesn't make invalid numbers into valid statistics, the polls are still useless.

And people could get better samples if they really tried. They could look up lists of players and try to conatct them in-game and survey them directly in a way that would get a much better response rate. But that's a lot of work and they don't actually want to look very far when they can just reinforce the views they already hold without actually trying to learn anything.

Marshbouy3 votes

wow 6000, people, thats so many. It does not help that people who go on the boards are convinced that DQ is terrible (not saying it is or isn't) and will then also read posts and hear about this roundtable video.

Vistha Kai2 votes

Except this video appears in the game client, not only Boards.

People who don't give a shit about Boards also watched the video, voiced their opinions and left a vote.

So don't bullshit with "Boards are biased", because you are the most biased here.

Marshbouy1 votes

that is still a tiny amount of people compared to the vast majority of the 67 million monthly players and 27 million daily players.

My point is still valid. The boards are horribly biased and trying to tell anyone otherwise is simply stupid. The boards are the vocal minority. The vocal minority all goes to the boards because they want to voice their opinions, but over time those opinions mash together as everyone convinces each other of following one opinion.

People who are not the vocal minority but still care have contributed their like/dislike. Everyone else who just doesn't care has moved on.

So that is 10,672,096 ranked accounts under Riot's jurisdiction*. Not daily, not monthly, ALL ranked accounts.

* - China and southern Asia countries have their own publishers. Did you know: China has 27 servers?

ZeeWolfZ1 votes

The numbers you have provided weren't updated since January, 2014.

Riot's player base has been falling since and they are afraid to provide players with real charts/numbers to backup their constant praise of their "evergrowing" game.

okay? 17,000 is still a tiny amount
