Can Thresh finally be considered a melee champion while keeping the same AA range?

Thresh is considered a ranged champion but has the strengths and weakness of a melee champion instead of a ranged one. Yet because he is considered a ranged champion he has to have precise last hitting capabilities as a champion who typical builds no damage to make use of relic shield passive instead of being able to take advantage of the execute passive that champions with just slightly less range than him can use. And now he even gains less healing from it because of his ranged status while still having no built in healing. I'm generally in favor of always adding more skill expression into the game but having to bust out a calculator to insure a champion with weak auto attack damage through out the game will be able to last hit is a awful way of doing so.

A rioter not too long ago said something along the lines of: it would be too complicated for thresh to be considered melee given his 450 range.

Champions like Morgana and Fiddlesticks would have to be melee then if you were to follow that logic. Gnar's mini form auto attacks would have to be melee. The defining cutoff for melee champions seems to be 200 range(I think?)

While I would love to see something in place for the dear thresh players, we're just going to have to give it some time.

How do Morgana and Fiddle sticks have the strength and weakness of a melee champions? They play and scale the same way most ranged champions do. Thresh is a ranged champion in name only. Other wise buff the AA range to be comparable to those of janna, lulu, karma, and nami. Then he will be a legitimate ranged champion.
