Why did Shen recieved garbage health per level and armor per level?

I don't know why Riot completely dumpstered his base stats

He is the 3rd and 4th worst armor per level and armor at level 18 and 5th worst health per level champion in the game. What gives?

Isn't he supposed to be tanky? It even says in his champion bio in the client:

His defense power is massive, but his base stats are horrible...

Might aswell his defense power be at the level of Sona...

because his lane presence is ridiculous and he gets the ability permashield in a fight and dodge auto attacks.

Sion has lower base armor than kindred. Go fucking figure

But he has something to scale off, while Shen has nothing.

dont give me any butts dj sona. riot just wants to rotate the meta and as a result, they dont have any principal behind the stats.

A better question is why are people still trying to pretend that Shen is bad? He's great.

Top was my least preferred role for about as long as I've played the game, but right now all I want to do is play Shen. He's so much fun.

For the same reason as Mordekaiser : his passive shield can give him lots of effective health against champion, which mean he can't have high base stats.

Because late game he has a shield with nearly 100% uptime.

Any stat balancing is always based around a trade off. Shen gets to have insane durability by getting into fights and spamming Q and E on enemies for his shield, but in exchange is pretty weak if he doesn't manage his stats well and fails to build tanky. It's just a method of encouraging a healthy play style without directly forcing it on the player.

The excuse is probably his passive and W, but I think it's pretty silly.

This is what Riot likes to call flattening an intended advantage, and it's a poor design flaw that they implement in so many champions.

Basically, they give an champion an archtype or some sort of component in their kit that is supposed to attract players for that reason and give them a sort of purpose. Thresh gets to stack AP and armor indefinitely, Sion gets to stack health, Lissandra gets free spells every once and a while. Orianna gets a stronger auto.

These are all mechanics core to a champion, so you would think "Lissandra will have a mana advantage" or "Sion will have a health advantage" and etc. But no. They purposefully nerf base stats with which their supposed strength is supposed to be boosting. Thresh doesn't get armor per level and has a terrible starting armor, Sion has the lowest base health in the game, Lissandra has next to no mana regen and terrifyingly expensive spells, Orianna has I believe the lowest base AD in the game, and I'm sure there's many many more.

Since Shen gets his spammable shield passive, they figure they have to remove his natural tankiness to remove what is supposed to be a boon to him. It's awful design, but Riot does it anyways.

idk it's probably because its the ability that should give the advantage, not your champion just being naturally better than others through stats alone.

but no, I MUCH prefer it when the enemy is able to walk all over me because their numbers are higher and didn't need to press buttons or CS well, or manage a passive well, /s

it makes a ton of sense if you're not completely ignorant of riot's, or just general game design philosophies.

Riot hates tanks. Hates how they slow the game down, hates how they regulate other roles despite limited tools, hates how they can mitigate flashy bullshit, etc.

So they shit on them every chance they get. With itemization. With base stats. At every opportunity.
