Riot, Please Don't Do to Ekko What Was Done to Azir

It took a day and a half, but I finally managed to get access to the PBE client to test out Ekko. Only played him in two custom matches, seeing as I knew there was zero chance of being able to play him in co-op, but he brings to the game something that few champions do, at least for me: sheer fun. The last champion released that I felt that way about? Azir. Before the nerfs. He's still fun now, don't get me wrong, but now I'd only choose him for that reason alone, as I'm certainly not doing it with a win in mind. Even prior to the nerfs, he was boom or bust for me because, like with many champions rage about, it's one thing to play him effectively and another thing entirely to "master" him, given the complexity of his kit.

Ekko reminds me a lot of LeBlanc and Zed, and so I'm expecting similar discussions of him being "OP" and in need of nerfing once he's gone live. His ult is similar to the most hated part of Zed's kit, his ult, in that he can overextend with relative safety. With boots, your past self trails behind you far enough that you could run up mid lane, ult upon reaching the second turret, and be transported back behind your inhibitor turret. That's not even taking into account the increased distance he could travel if an E was thrown in there as well. Moreover, his ult can conceivably be more deadly than Zed's if he ults back to grouped enemies who are also low, and if he also leads off with a W prior so they're also stunned and at point-blank range for his Q (which will only keep them locked down longer), an E, and/or AAs to utilize his passive.

The rest of his kit I don't see being as controversial. His Q is Ahri's, but with a longer return time and an 80% slow. His W takes 3 seconds, making it easy to dodge. You almost have to combo it for it to land. Q to slow, W, then dash in with E. Or just W+E. And his E is basically Ezreal's Arcane Shift with some slight modifications. Nothing stands out, at least not to me, as "broken" or "OP." It's his kit combined that makes him both deadly and fun to play. You can pick up basic combos like the rapid fire QWE pretty easily, but I know stuff like that only scratches the surface, just like I know that it'll take me forever to come anywhere near mastering a champion like Zed.

Or, for that matter, any of the champions I find most fun, as they all tend to be along those same lines (ex. Lee Sin, Zed, LeBlanc, Shaco, Azir). And Ekko is a sure bet to join them. So please, if you do end up nerfing him somewhere down the line, at least be kind enough to give him the Lee Sin/Zed/LeBlanc treatment instead of the Azir treatment. Those three have all gotten nerfed in some fashion without falling off the map like Azir did, going from one of the top bans (briefly) to one of the worst win rates in the game. LeBlanc had her silence removed, Zed's going to have a 1 second delay on reactivating his ult, and Lee Sin has had a nerf here and there, and all 3 are still big enough pests for people to complain about them constantly despite their win rates not really being that scary. So please follow those examples.

EDIT: I await all the downvotes, especially since I invoked the names of Zed, LeBlanc, and Lee Sin...

Every new champ is supposedly "broken af" according to this board, especially upon release. He's literally just a cross between Zed and LeBlanc who people also get too worked up about because they're the kind of champ that's easy to play well but extremely difficult to fully maximize. I mean, look at their win rates.

I'd be more sympathetic to people calling Malzahar broken, as most of his "counters" hardly see play. But all your team needs is a Janna and his ult becomes useless in teamfighrs. I'm with the people who say Riot should more or less ignore this forum altogether when it comes to matters of "balance."

A big problem is Malz reaches lvl 6 before teamfights start, so the person laning against him still suffers because they are in a solo lane and have no-one else to interrupt.

really? Bard was and is still often considered a piece of garbage by most people

Trust me, I've seen literally every champ called "OP" or "broken AF" at one point or another. That seems to be all this board does most of the times, just calls for nerfs for their pet peeve champions.

But Bard is the one recent champ that Riot somehow made underpowered to start. I get the feeling Riot would rather release a champ so "broken" that they end up with a 75% win rate, allowing them to get out the nerf hammer, than release one like Bard that can only be made viable in his current form by a select few.

i have seen quite a few being called broken and i have also seen quite a few being called trash for the longest time. No one wants to see a champion buffed and downvote anyone who even attempts to mention the words while people just want to see champions nerfed/gutted because they are to stupid and keep counterpicking themselves and then wondering why that champion keeps destroying them. That's how people are, not just here but anywhere

Which is why I would rather Riot mostly do their own thing. This board just reflects the stereotypical bronze mentality of "I didn't lose, I was unfairly beaten." It's not limited to this board, like you said. I see it every match, aside from the rare one where both teams are civil and friendly (occasionally I'll have friendly convos relating to non-League matters with my lane opponent).

Why must people be so hyperbolic about their concerns? I'm no huge fan of Kalista's super mobility, for instance, but the upcoming nerf helps, and as long as you shut her down in lane, which happens pretty often due to her not being the easiest ADC to play, she'll just be bunny hopping away from the inevitable. I see nothing to be running and crying to Riot about.

Honestly, I'm more bothered by how Malzahar's ult can be interrupted by virtually everything from a QSS to Janna's tornado to spell shields to your own movement (accidentally cancelled far too many times) to trying to ignite from too far away while ulting. I mean, what can't stop it in some form? And it's only single target and immobilizes you as well, when you're already one of the most immobile mid laners in the game. But I know his win rate's already one of the highest, as he is one of the strongest mid laners, so I'm not going to go calling for a buff over my personal pet peeve because that would be silly.

Oh, and now that I know you can ult back to lane if you open shop while recalling to let you buy your item fast, I love Ekko even more.

Azir is good now, his nerfs were almost completely reverted and one of the highest players here in EUW is an Azir main.

He's in a better place than where he was, I'll admit. I brought him up because Riot was too drastic, swift, and reactionary with his nerfs. I just don't want to see him nerfed to hell almost immediately and have to wait for them to see their mistakes and "revert" them. I want them to be more thoughtful and restrained this time around.

I agree, keep on the level of Zed and Leblanc.
