Why Riot needs to take a second pass at mana pool changes

Patch 5.22 notes

If you look closely, there are very few junglers on the list. Evelynn and Fiddle being the only champions who are very rarely in lane. Hecarim has been in lane a lot the past year and Sion has always played more in lane and Naut has seen a lot of top and bot play.

Riot based their mana changes on if these champions needed mana potions. What they're forgetting is that junglers don't often need mana potions, but still are mana-expensive. If they're played in lane, they are very, very starved.

So I'll talk about 3 champions in particular that DO see lane play but might not be considered meta for those positions. NocturneNocturne , Master YiMasterYi , and UdyrUdyr .

These champions are VERY mana hungry and even in the jungle I had often purchased mana potions for them, usually later in the game. However, since they're based on how often people bought mana potions for them, I believe junglers got left out. They had a mana regen passive on their item and they often get Blue buff.

So, for these reasons, I believe a second look needs to be taken because lane phases with these guys is way harder than it used to be.

The only role with those 3 champs and lanes that makes sense to me is Udyr top, but having never played it I can't see howd you would need to change stances unless a fight broke out and therefore how you would need to use mana unless a fight broke out. Laning for Nocturne MasterYi , when done, could be annoying without mana pots but giving them mana buffs would make their jungling time too easy, and all 3 of these champs are played in the jungle much much much more often than in lane.

Mana buffs don't affect anyone but Udyr as far as jungling goes. The other two will mana sustain for much longer. Udyr could probably use it though, if he doesn't take the mana regen item first he's OOM extremely quickly during first clear, if he doesn't take machete he just dies due to lack of health sustain.

Yi goes to every lane and while Noct top is occasionally a thing, he's actually great Mid and played there kind of often. Also, Faker did it.

You can't effectively balance a champion around a roll they play probably <5% of the time. Yi, Nocturne, and Udyr almost never go top. If they receive mana buffs for that roll it will have too great of an impact on their primary roll. They need to be balanced around the rolls they are played in 95% of the time to avoid creating unnecessary balance issues.

Riot should address Nautilus. His jungle isn't in a very good place at the moment.

Mana buffs for them won't affect their jungle at all. It's primarily a lane buff.

Naut got mana buffs so he's irrelevant as far as the purposes of my discussion goes.

You forgot lane Shaco .

Also, as a lame cop-out solution, the 1.5% of your max mana every 5 seconds mastery is actually really good on those few champions I used to use mana potions on. I know it's stupid to have to rely on an outside source for a compensation you shouldn't have to deal with, but that's all I've got right now outside of using mana regen runes.

Yes and no about forgetting him. I have experience with the other 3 and I just wanted to talk about what I know. The post though isn't about buffing Noct, Yi, and Udyr. It's about taking a second pass at the mana pool for ALL jungler main role champions, which includes Shaco :D I merely use those 3 as examples.

The problem with meditation is that it's in the same part of the mastery tree as merciless, which means anyone who isn't a tank or support will want/need merciless to function.

That said, you're right, it's about compensation for the loss of mana potions. It's about champ balance, not mastery balance. What champions have too expensive mana costs? Whose pools are too small?

They said that masteries should be more about playstyles than definite needs. Meditation to me is for those who like to spam spells or primarily are spellcasters that aren't up for damage (supports, tanks). So it's about making sure mana on champions is in line, rather than being forced to take a mastery to function.

Sorry for long post :D
