The Magic of Toplane Mages

Ok, so I gotta tell a story first. I just got an S- from an ARAM (1st time Rammus, and it was hilarious, I just slowly killed everyone after diving their team-no clue how I got an S) and then I got a Viktor shard from my chest (I get a ton of keys but no chests cuz I suck).

I tried Brand top and it failed miserably, but I think it has potential. I play a lot of mages top and I can certainly see Brand/Viktor/Malzahar in top if you have a tank jungler and support, since they can get pretty tanky while building full AP.

Any tips for when I inevitably 1st time Viktor top tomorrow morning? Viktor mains, can I get away with going ????

Not really any point in building tank, even if you are in top lane. You still have to play to your champion's strengths.

The point of item 3116 and why it synergizes so well with Viktor is because Viktor has a ton of mobility due to his Q proc with second core upgrade on Q and summoner 6

Between the enemy being slow and you being stupid fast, you can kite and do damage and not die.

Ok, Lich Bane would work. Didn't want to get uber tanky, just tough enough for fights. I can see your point about the kiting thing though.

I'm guessing I want TLD and not Stormraider's? The latter is seeming pretty appealing but TLD is great in lane.

TLD is standard, because your standard combo, Q, Aa, E procs it automatically

I mean, there are certainly different styles of mages. Some work better with tanky stats than others. But with Victor, you probably work just fine with a Crystal scepter. (Subject to change pending Crystal scepter changes) Any Battle mage works well with HP, especially the likes of swain or Vlad. Though the most common top lane mages currently are Engage mages like Kennen and Lissandra, Though they usually chose Hourglass or other utiltiies to protect them than off tank stats.

Personally, I would go with a Utility mage if I wanted a Tanky mage top. Champions like Lulu and Karma have both Offensive and Defensive tools that scale with AP. (only caveat to that is, they don't wave clear as well)

pretty sure u could go ad viktor and he will still do decent damage. ap mages in a really bad spot right now :(( having an option to choose any item u want because you have an incredibly vast itemization but zomg assassins :(

Some of them are, but the notion that all AP mages are somehow the league equivalent of starving african children where rito (the guy in the commercial who is "usually" white) is trying to get people to send their $ to save them is incredibly hilarious.

If I had to pick a "class" that could use a rework or buff after the assassin bullsh't that they're doing, I'd love to see a bunch of tanks get buffs and be able to be used potentially as mid-laners. Then I won't be the only one playing Tahm mid.

Would definitely not reccomend viktor top as although he can push out waves against most things he's ridiculously easy to gank and doesn't really offer any side-lane dueling potential that you expect out of top-laners nowadays. If you want to play a mage toplane, try either ryze or swain. Both are easy to get the hang of and both can absolutely destroy unprepared teams with a decent lead.
