Yasuo is a very overbearing opponent.

Mal the Red··161 votes·6,344 views

Two highly effective passives one for offense and one for defense, mobility that literally has no cooldown and allows for endless chase/escape capability, an active skill that completely blocks any projectile coming his way, be they skillshot or point and click, even if he throws it in the wrong or opposite direction, stats way too high for how overloaded his kit is.

Now here's where people are supposed to point out his supposed weaknesses.

"He's fragile." Yeah, no he's not. He rushed a Phantom Dancer and a Frozen Mallet just so he could stick and chase even better than he normally does while you're doing way less damage back to him. Because he has his passive shield and wind wall in addition to the stats. "Use an auto to break his passive shield." Then what? Wait the two seconds it takes for the shield to expire then watch as he throws up a wind wall to stop the rest of your attacks and dancing around that long lasting wall long enough that when it expires his passive shield is up again? That's all Yasuo has to do... Rinse, Repeat, Cash the free wins.

I don't feel outplayed when I lose to a Yasuo. I feel angry... I feel cheated... I feel tilted... But worst of all is the complete obnoxiousness of Yasuo players in general.

They are ALL mastery 7, ALL of them. And they want you to know it by flashing their mastery badges every single chance they get. They demand teammates to have knock ups so he can use his super low cd ult more. A super low cd ult that ALSO refreshes his passive shield.

Earlier today I was angry and spammed posts that had the topic and body text that simply said "NERF YASUO" but I have been challenged by my friends to articulate my feelings about the champ in much kinder words and see just the difference in downvotes and comments.

Because I feel like I'm wasting my time writing all of this if I could just say "NERF YASUO" over and over like I did earlier and get the exact same response.

I'll grant this. I main Yasuo but even I will acknowledge how overbearing he is to face 1v1 if your champion isn't well suited for dealing with him.

Salson28 votes

Every duelist is overbearing in a 1v1.

Playing vs Yasuo as Riven/Renekton top or Akali/Malzahar mid is not that overbearing, as you match a duelist with another duelist.

Hell, he rushes Phantom Dancer, it's like a giant cardboard sign that says 'I can only 1v1'.

DunkinNoobs24 votes

Yasuo is overbearing in a way that many of those champs aren't because of how much chasing power he has through a minion wave combined with his shield that significantly mitigates return damage during the laning phase. Like I said, I main Yasuo and even I am still sometimes surprised by how far away he can be while still being able to all in me provided I'm not just a few steps away from my tower. Yasuo's agency in being able to force trades is simply unmatched which is why he snowballs so fucking hard in lane. Your only real options against a Yasuo are to keep the wave perpetually under or just outside your tower or to be stronger than him at melee range. Many champions, particularly mid mages, simply can't manage option 2 and thus are forced into option 1 for the entire laning phase. Playing something like Ziggs against Yasuo and knowing there's nothing you can do barring a huge misplay by the Yasuo just isn't fun. That kind of play pattern is necessary for Yasuo to function in lane but I totally get while people hate playing against it.

True, to be honest I mostly play top. Fighter's are a lot more 'fair' to play into him, and ranged tops are 10 times more annoying than Yasuo could ever be. He is also more fun to play against that his retarded crit brother Tryn.

His mid is fucked up, while he hard counters skillshot based mages, he loses to some really unfair stuff like Malza, Anie and Akali. I'm hoping to play the new Azir into him, could be a fun matchup.

He isn't meant to be a duelist though. Not in the slightest. He's not meant to be an assassin either. He's a melee ADC, someone who is supposed to be distinctly vulnerable early game, with a large payoff late.

Instead we've got a powerful lane bully who invalidates tons of champions entirely, who transforms into a super-mobile hyper carry by grabbing two items from the shop for 100% crit.

Salson4 votes

He's a melee ADC

Ranged ADC == Marksman Melee ADC == Skirmisher

Yasuo ( I don't actually main this guy, but I enjoy the role ) is a Skirmisher, same as his friends Fiora Riven Tryndamere MasterYi Jax

All of them are strong duelists, and outside of specific class exceptions like Vayne and Nasus, Skirmishers are THE duelists.

I am also a yasuo main and it just doesn't seem fair that i can get 100% crit 15 minutes in

DunkinNoobs3 votes

100% crit doesn't mean much when you only have 87 AD. A item 3153 would do significantly more damage, especially against tanks while costing the same amount of gold and also giving you lifesteal.

Rushing item 1018 after item 3046 is a noob trap, btw.

He would be much bearable to play against if the windwall wasn't such a mess of a skill.

It blocks projectiles from every direction

Casting it will block projectiles that are pretty much already in your face

If 1 pixel of a massive spell touches the windwall, it will get completely blocked (Like Nami's wave).

It blocks a shit ton of stuff it shouldn't block in my opinion;

Ground effects, like Velkoz E or Swain Q; How are those considered projectiles? Tresh/Blitz hook, Amumu binding; Why are they considered projectiles? It's not some small arrow that can Ricochet from the windwall, it's a freaking part of themselves they are throwing at you.

And there are countless more abilities that just doesn't make sense that are getting blocked by his windwall.

Some good points well made. Many seem to think when anyone comments on him it's because people just lost to him or people think he's OP. It's usually neither. He's just annoying, even bad ones can be annoying.

The thing I don't like most, he makes me feel unsafe in my own minions. I can take the rest but him dashing about in my minions when all I wanted to do was farm that one melee minion who strolled up too far?

I can handle the guy, just he's annoying.

Honestly, I don't consider Yasuo a strong champion. Let me give some background information first. I used to be hardstuck silver this season and unable to deal with Yasuo, but due to improvement I managed to climb to diamond. I recently finished my end of the season climb from plat v to diamond v and I banned Yasuo several times during that end of season climb. Since my goal was to win and not to allow people to ruin my games I started banning Yasuo, Lee Shìt and Master Yeast whenever someone in my team wanted to pick him.

So why did I take Yasuo away from my teammates? Because they were a liability. I rarely see a Yasuo win nowadays. I am an ADC main and I mainly played Miss Fortune. Now one may argue that MF and the ADC role are overbearing, but the only time I really struggled with a Yasuo was when my ENTIRE team was far behind. Yasuo can simply be dealt with by not trying to duel him, just like you don't duel a Jax, Tryndamere, Fiora or Master Yeast lategame. If Yasuo is ahead, tell your frontline that after they initiate a fight and Yasuo dives the backline, that they should peel Yasuo off them. Yasuo isn't very strong right now, even though he might seem overbearing to inexperienced people. He's still very vulnerable, even though he has his windwall.

Now how do you counter Yasuo in lane you might ask. Pre 6 he can be pretty strong, however post 6 other champions get their ultimate to use, while Yasuo has to rely on an easy to dodge skillshot (if one positions correctly) to get his stun off. If he can dash to you as a mage or a range toplaner such as Jayce, Teemo or Quinn you simply mispositioned or he went to great lengths to even get to you. Yasuo has no ultimate untill you mess up. That's where he gets vulnerable. Other champions will have an ultimate, but Yasuo won't if you play the matchup correctly.

Now to tell you what I really consider overbearing opponents, it have to be Twitch, Rammus, Lulu and Draven. Against Twitch you rely on your team not to mess up, Rammus makes your team kill themselves with very little counterplay, Lulu has short cooldown defensive steroids, and a point and click CC and Draven is just way too strong in the current meta. Against Draven you rely on punishing his mistakes early on. You rely on Draven to mess up in order to stand a chance or else you'll have to hug your turret. One kill and Draven will snowball out of control.

I hope that this has helped you. I wish you the best of luck upon your future matches on the rift.

No one above silver considers him a strong champ. There was a point in time he was a monster. 2 seasons ago I got diamond 2 off of Yas (and Zed). He's been nerfed to the point of kind of viable. Granted, he is no fun to face because his kit is "overloaded". He's still ass, though. Lol. Even though he is frustrating to lane against, I'm elated when the enemy team has a Yas, and depressed when my team has one. Currently, he is a feed to win champ. You can expect him to go 2/11. Lol. Then with one good Zac/Lee ult, he gets a triple and is back in the game. Lol. When he was strong, I got to d2 maining him. He's so weak now that I don't play him. His kit is cancer, but he's a PoS champ that is detrimental to his team.

My apologies for the late reply. Miss Fortune is a champion which can adapt to almost any meta. I personally use a build that's specialized for the ardent meta we're currently in. Miss Fortune got me to Diamond with a 59% winrate, so I guess that she's better than people think she is.

The only thing I dont get is why everyone has to be carefull when dives or fights near enemy turrt to not get free shots, but Yasuo is protected by the game code itself? Why his ult reposition him to be outside of turret range? If he makes bad plays make him pay for that!

Ah yes, the thread is transforming into a "Let's suggest stupid "balance" ideas to gut Yasuo" thread.

My personal favorite is anything that suggests making his abilities cost flow. It almost sounds reasonable as long as you have no idea how Yasuo actually functions.

Votable Jester8 votes

My issue with Yasuo is how his Winwall completely warps champion balance. Whether or not a targeted ability or autoattack used a projectile or not didn't really matter much before, and champions weren't balanced much around that. Then Yasuo came in and made that a matter of life and death to every champion in a game with him.

For example Kayle's autoattacks with E on don't have a projectile portion. That used to not really matter at all because it doesn't change how often you can attack, but now if there's a Yasuo on the enemy team, Kayle's able to keep putting out her dps while pretty much every other ranged dps in the game cannot (only when windwall is in the way of course). Kayle wasn't considered stronger for not having a projectile for a ranged autoattack, but now she suddenly is against this one specific champion.

Cobalt Shrew7 votes

Hi, allow me to give my own opinion about all this.

For starters, I don't play yasuo (i've played him once in aram, was fcking boring, but i hate arams). I don't particularly dislike the champion. Now there are some pretty tilting things about him, as you mentionned it, his mobility is part of it. The fact that my yasuos often feed can also be listed as a "tilt inducer". But ultimately, what i hate the most, is the popularity of the champion. Indeed, playing a video game that has over 140 champs (if i counted right) to play 1 game out of 2 with the god damn exact champion, all the time. Thankfully, the champion is often banned, so it's not that present in actual games.

Other than that, i like the champion : you can play around him if he's in your team due to his high damage / carry potential (so as a support, jungler, you can try to play around him). Now of course, if the player sucks he won't carry, but that would have been the case on another champion, yasuo is not to blame. I've encountered a lot of skillfull yasuo players so i'm pretty sure they are not ALL retarded. In the other hand, yasuo is also kind of a pleasant opponent (in my opinion, i'll get back on that a bit later), since he is easily punished (as a jungler, camping his ass and getting fed on his account is fairly easy), very weak to CC, and squishy (PD works only if he AA'd you, and if he did mallet in second item he doesnt have IE and so his damage is kinda low).

Now, i am some kind of a despicable one trick pony myself, playing mostly tryndamere and master Yi (i can see the comments coming like "what are u, like bronze 4 ??", im not, just check op.gg). But my point here is to say that as someone with a very restricted champion pool, yasuo is not a problem. The master Yi / yasuo match up is actually very skillfull and based off mind game, since the 1v1 winner is decided by whether or not i manage to dodge the tornado. It is nearly impossible to dodge it qith the alpha strike point blank (since the animation is fast), i can either try to anticipate the tornado or run from yasuo so i can see the tornado coming and have more time to dodge it. Anyway, my point is that the champ feels good to play against since its a match up im rewarded for winning, and i'm the only one to blame if i lose it (not the champion, not some balance, just my own skill). When it comes down to yasuo / trynda match up top, kinda the same : yasuo has an advantage early, and always "outmobilities" tryndamere so he's hard to kill, but tryndamere can overpower yasuo faily easily yasuo at 1-2 items. And in the late game, it just comes down to skill : who has the advantage on the other by having the effect of surprise or the ability of the yasuo to dodge the bullet during trynda's ult...

I'm pretty sure the reason why yasuo doesnt bother me that much is just because of my champion pool. Indeed, when i play ADC, yasuo is a way more abnoxious character thanks to his windwall and his ability to destroy you. And I think that's why you cannot just do that kind of post on boards, saying that champion is overpowered or whatnot. Because match ups are to be taken into account. If u ask me and my rather low champion pool, i'd ask for a nerf of lulu or janna over yasuo ^^ But thats just me, because lulu or janna just make life impossible for melee DPS champions. And I am pretty sure, a lot of people do not care about lulu or janna being "overpowered".

This game has so much diversity that it is difficult to balance out : some champs will be broken given the appropirate metagame (or given the good teamcomp). Now I get what you say mate, and I totally understand why and how you could hate any champion, especially yasuo. I just don't think it is relevant, since the champion is good against some match ups, bad against others, synergizes well with some things, badly with others etc...

Also, as mentionned in other comments here, yasuo is a duellist, his ability to duel can be matched, and he'll definitely be weaker then some CC tank, or any shield support / hyper carry ADC in a teamfight. Every champion is good at something, and bad at other things. If u dislike some mehcanics in the game (for my part, the ability to peel, since i like to smash squishy targets with high DPS melee champs) it is probably because of your playstyle. If you play a lot of these "team based" champions, you will hate to face a splitpusher, whichever it is.

Hope I wont get too many dowvotes for saying that i dont hate yasuo, and also forgive me for any mistakes, i didnt read back this comment and am not a native english speaker.

The most frustrating two things with him are both related to Wind Wall.

  1. It can block an infinite amount for his duration with no cost or downside.

  2. It's "spawn behind him and move forward" mechanic. It should be a proactive spell, not a reactive one. It should appear at its final location.

But see, this is the issue. Yasuo players are either really shit because they have no idea what they are doing, or they are fuckin pro because they have about 1mil mastery points. This leads to a bimodal skill distribution which is REALLY tough to balance around, because just looking at the raw data would show that he is statistically balanced, despite the fact that he is highly OP or severely UP depending upon the player using him.

GGLineaR5 votes

I once saw someone defend Yasuo's double crit chance bullshit by saying "It forces him to buy squishy".

Even though... Ya know, it doesn't. Like, at all. He needs 2 or 3 items to hit 100% as opposed to everyone else needing 5 and a full rune page of crit, and even THEN they might not hit 100% lol

Asking for Yasuo nerfs is a fruitless effort.

God forbid they update their coding so that windwall doesn't block everything under the sun, or they remove ONE of his two busted passives. The effort isn't gonna work, so I suggest just putting him on permaban if he's constantly in your games.

Durzaka7 votes

The real defense for Yasuo's double crit chance is that it is his damage steroid. Every melee "ADC" needs one.

Tryna has free passive crit that builds. And Yi has true damage/bonus AD as well as double strike. And Yaso gets double crit chance (and slightly weaker crits).

Guy Fox Teemo5 votes

This is the most hyperbolic and biased post i've seen on Yasuo in awhile. Yea Yasuo's an annoying little shit, but he's a garbo champion, and any decent player that plays any mid laner, with some patience will kick Yasuo to the curb.

(I do think him being viable top is bullshit though, since it gets rid of some of his weakness's)

Mal the Red4 votes

Well, I can honestly say I am surprised about how much of a positive reception this post has received.

Yes, my initial reaction (Spamming "Nerf Yasuo" posts.) is the direct result of a tilting loss against one. It really does not take much to get that snowball rolling. Like when your bot lane gives him a double kill because they fail to properly respond to your Missing call and Warning ping. Because by then he has a Phantom Dancer and your jungler doesn't want to gank a fed lane, meanwhile he's diving you under your tower because he does not have to worry about your damage because he has Phantom Dancer, he has Passive, he has Wind Wall, he has the capability to win any trades now.

Whether you face him Mid or Top, no champ can "shit on Yasuo" as you put it. I get that some champions are just better in 1v1 situations.

And if my some miracle you DO manage to shut him down, he's still just as fed when he comes back.

And it's not an IF, either. It's a when. Yasuo scales disgustingly with items, so all he needs to do is farm if hes behind. Even if hes 0/20.

The damage creep / mobility creep is absolutely astronomical right now.

Combined with insane lifesteal, all AD champions need to have everything chopped roughly in half or thirds.

Søn oƒ Echidnæ3 votes

I'll agree with you. Accepting the fact that I am pretty low elo and as a result am not the most intuitive player on board, there are simply no other champions I feel so easily outplayed by on a consistent basis. I'll put aside the fact (yes, fact after 1000+ matches) that the vast majority of Yas players I've happened upon are also verbal nightmares, in order to focus on the real point here.

His passive shield for starters. Constantly having to choose between minimal CS gain and pre mitigating the impending new shield is exasperating. If you go for the CS, his shield pops and he starts shit. If you spend time keeping pace with taking his shield down and keeping him dancing rather than letting him bitch slap you, you lose CS.

Then there is the fact that your own CS constantly supplies him with renewed avenues of access to you, despite your constant attempts to re position AWAY from him. It never ends. You have a few seconds to scrape together some gold, or recover a few HP, or scratch his chrome, and then the new wave of minions arrive and he forces a new engage all over again.

I won't say it's unfair, as many champions have seemingly "unfair" mechanics, but it is just not FUN. It is a miserable time unless you happen to be a player who knows how to pick a Yas apart, and that simply isn't a lot of us (I can already hear the fanboys poking insults about how easy it is and how noob I am)

Combine those mechanics, and you then get a nightmare of a tower diver who can all too often, too quickly assassinate you. Many mid champs simply do not have an immediate answer. I can not tell you how many times I've had to settle for (barely) killing a Yas because he stayed a micro second too long under my turret after murdering me, rather than straight up defeating him in combat. It is not fun, and the kill I get in return is more an insult to me than him.

Then his ult. The almost constant harass he can output while getting ready to proc with that damn tornado he throws, is a miserable time in itself if you are an easy kill for him. You can run, he will likely catch you, even if by accident. Yes, by accident. I know damn well low elo Yas, much like other similarly coordinated players, are not 100% accurate skill shot gods, and can not always be THAT damn uncanny and accurate with the catch. It is absurd how quickly it reaches you, despite your best attempts to read its potential path and your opponents intentions. Too often the slightest pixel of misstep, and a lucky spam on his part, and bam, Tornado and then ulted. Sweet coin toss for him, pure rage for you.

His windwall is the only fair to league mechanic he has, in my opinion. It has to be placed, and for all my best intentions, I can rarely meet a Yas who is not faster at placing his wall than I am at casting whatever ranged opposition I had in mind. That, in itself, IS my fault. I am not quick. I am okay with that. And its cool being jaw dropped when you try to Nami ult and have it bounces off of windwall out of nowhere. It makes some hilarious moments.

Many people will point out, that he has to be matched against with certain champs, and that is very true, but everyone doesn't play the champs he is poorly matched against, or matched up more evenly to. From even his early levels, he is simply overbearing to a large portion of mid would be players.

And do not forget about his damage. Wow. I've been hit in the face with late game Vaynes and still felt like I wasn't being bent over and having my intestines ripped out from through my back door.

Sincerely Some moron who can't compete with (any) Yas regardless of skill level

Drugoth2 votes

In my opinion, if Riot insists on keeping his free crit stat in his passive, the least they can do us tie his shield to his windwall ability and force him to choose between one or the other, make meaningful choices. For instance, it could work like this:

Passive - Flow moved to W (Wind wall). Yasuo charges his flow while moving around, when at max flow, the next attack that would otherwise hurt Yasuo will trigger a shield that will block damage. Yasuo can also choose to spend all flow, putting this ability on Cool down to create a windwall, blocking all projectiles from one direction. Flow will not recharge while windwall is on cooldown.

And there you have it, a slight change that I think will add counterplay opportunities and encourage critical thinking.

A passive that you need to buy stats to even use is not free, and it also comes with a crit damage penalty. Very few champs get stats that can truly be described as "free" and Yasuo is not one of them.

Im pretty sure when you get an extra 20% Crit off of raptors cloak that can be classified as "free" You're going to buy the item anyways because crit is good on Yasuo, so getting double crit is just the cherry on top.

Oh Hell No. The only reason Yasuo buys crit is because of the passive. If it didn't exist, he would just build on hit bruiser like Jax and Irelia. Hell, we've already seen on hit bruiser Yasuo even with this passive let alone without it.

Why not just hamper his wind wall duration and increase it with levels (maybe a 2 second start 3 seconds at rank 3 and 4 at rank 5)? The things a barrier that eats attacks - not an Anivia ice wall so I never understood why it is balanced as it is. This would allow them to play with the strength of his walking shield so it feels better for players at varying skill levels while leaving his power net neutral? Hell if its done right it may even let Yasuo become more than a scrub stomper champ

This quote is too true, when ever I get killed by a Yasuo I don't think to myself "wow, I really got outskilled just there" I usually think "How is that balanced". I have an analogy for fighting Yasuo that goes something like this "Fighting Yasuo is like playing a chess match with someone who can move twice a turn". Sure they can be beat but GOD DAMN is it going to be difficult.
