If you don't have 3+ tanks on your team, the other team always will. If you don't end the game by 20 minutes vs an all tank team, you will automatically lose. No other meta forces every non adc to pick a tank or lose if the game lasts longer than 20 minutes.

A tank to soak up damage, an assassin to deal with the backliner, a fighter to sustain in the middle of the fray, a mage to be an annoyance shooting out void-shit & stuff, and bot lane (lol). Or else, what kind of idiot brings a squishy top & jungle instead of a tank (assuming support is a Janna or other squishies).

top lane is an island so it enforces a more tanky champ.

supports are relied on for utility and engage, and most tanky champs aren't as item reliant as there damaging counterparts.
at the very least you should have 2 tanks..a bruiser mage assassin and an adc.
it's not a bad thing it makes more champs relevant.
