In my opinion, the Varus lore retcon is sententious garbage

(read in the voice of jackie chile from seinfeild for best effect)

Making Varus homosexual doesn't increase or decrease his value as a champion or the depth of his character.

Leaving him as a heterosexual wouldn't increase or decrease his value as a champion or the depth of his character.

Therefore the choice to change one to the other is arbitrary in the context of his value as a champion.

Any change to a champion's lore or identity entails disillusionment in the fans of that champion who have become attached to the champion's identity as it was.

Because the choice to change one to the other does not objectively make Varus' identity deeper or make his story worth more, and the change itself only aggravates people who have become attached to his current story, there is negative value.

The only way to escape the implied negative value is to refute the idea that his new identity doesn't have more value than his old one. But this is tantamount to saying that a homosexual Varus is a better Varus than a heterosexual one.

joking aside, the out of the blue lore retcon was kind of uncalled for.

kind of uncalled for? it was VERY uncalled for. literally all they had to do was refer to that dark power in the temple as a darkin and everything would make sense.

No. It's tantamount to saying flushed out and more substantive lore is better than vague, simple, quickly written up stories with few to no details. it's also more about flushing out the Darkin Lore than about hetero vs homo.

Varus isn't Kai or the other guy. Varus is still as ambiguous as he always was. He's just made up of gay dudes.

Does making a character heterosexual increase or decrease his value as a champion or the depth of his character?

Then why does Riot add in any romantic interests for any of their champions?

The reason: They are meant to be more than just love interests. Kai was supposed to be a significant character in his lore, the person that drove him to the pit. That's just how they spun the story. It has nothing to do with the fact that Kai is a dude and things are getting bromantic in Varus's lore.

Why did Riot include a love interest for Darius in his lore?

To show that Darius wasn't always a merciless Noxian and held some form of compassion to at least 1 person and with her loss, he has no more ties to that emotion.

So anyway, homosexual or heterosexual it doesn't matter. Varus's "heartfelt" (ew) could have been a chick and nothing would be different. They just wanted to tell the story in a different way than the current "Varus was about to get rekt by Noxians so he holed up in the most corrupted room in Ionia and became Varus".

Also, his, and many other champions, lores are retconned so Riot can do more with them. You could have said the same thing about old Galio's lore, Poppy's lore, Urgot's lore, etc.

Are some people not gonna like their favorite champion's lore changing? Yeah sure. But sometimes these things need to change. Just like gameplay updates that completely shift a champion's identity (once again, Galio, Poppy, Urgot, toss in Sion too).

It's all so Riot can do more interesting things with the lore. In my opinion, the Varus lore is great and added a ton of personality and depth to his character while leaving the end open to new possibilities that didn't exist before (though personally I don't care too much for the bromance stuff that went on, but to each his own right?).

I generally don't follow LoL's lore promos at all, but I get the gist of what you're saying. So here's a joke to cheer you up!

What do you call a Varus who's attracted to women?

Het-Arrow Varus
