@Riot: there is too much damage in the game and causing too much problems

DragonShea··54 votes·3,976 views

In my opinion I think that damage needs to be looked at because their is too much damage and Conqueror (as much as I love it) I think it is making the game all about damage and sustain and shields, not raw tankiness as their are too many means to get by it as tanks can be hit and miss when it comes to balancing. The latest change on the PBE also convinced me into making this post because with the way that balancing is going, what I am seeing is a shift from extreme tanks and ADC power to just raw damage trumping all alongside powerful mitigating, pushing the game further towards an ADC meta.

That's really bad and a focus on the defensive stats and power overall is needed to restore the game balance to a better state IMO and personally I'd say that a focus on the sustained playstyle should be the basis for teamfighting and duels before dealing with the burst aspects of damage and healing etc.

peace out.

Many older players who are still around have been saying this for what?..3 seasons now? 6-8 has been atrocious and its all because of the whining for games to be faster by bads who want to surrender the second their team gives up first blood just so they can go lose again.

I've been saying damage creep is shitty for 5 seasons. I still remember the -2k post that a rioter got when they announced they were nerfing healing in S1-s2... I sure as hell downvoted too.

funny thing is that damage is actually lower now (at least on ADCs)

Now For part 2 of this.

Riot Should keep the game in a damage meta. They can reduce damage but they need to keep damage being the top dog as the mindset.

I vivdly remember playing S5 where I was mao against somebody (dont remember who) and we had a teamfight. Both ADCs died immediately. they respawned. Got back to the fight (which hadnt ended) and died immediately again. It was the worst state the game had and has ever been in. Tank metas are not fun. Damage metas are fun. Sometimes it gets a little out of hand, but the game should 100% be focused on damage.

ADCs in season 2 could never get away with building 6 damage items. Every ADC would at some point build at least a GA for defence. Looking at 6 damage items for S2 is absurd because nobody ever built 6 damage items.

Rewt1 votes

GA was the only defensive item they built. Damage was actually very similar.

Game pacing was slower yes, but that was more of the champions not having the kits they have now. The kits in todays league of legends are much flashier and quicker. Its not damage. its champ kits.

But even then. Damage is fine in league. When a tank gets ahead in league nowdays they are an unstoppable monster. I just got fed as ww yesterday. I just walked away as 4 people tried to kill me.

Damage is not an issue.

Automated Riven8 votes

Ga or banchees. And no. Lifesteal was mandatory and so critical capped at 60%. You had IE BT LW and one zeal item. With 25-30 crit on zeal and IE depending on the patch. They did less damage unless they went for super risky high damage builds.

GigglesO1 votes

Ummm I think you are making shit up about crit capping. I have always purchased 100% since S1. There was even a time where Sword of the divine gave 100% crit on your next 3 autos.

Automated Riven2 votes

My bad, wrong choice of words. It wasn't capped. But it was completely unfeasible for people get more due to how the game worked.

GigglesO1 votes

No it wasn't season 1-3 was my highest penta-kill amount because of 100% crit twitch. IT just never caught on. Even trinity force and ghostblade gave crit, it was great. There was just also more armor in the game.

Once you started playing with people who focused you. It wasn't readable anymore.

IT was when you built 4 items to get to 100% and then purchased a two tiamats...

In season 2 there wasn't a item 3071 for 24% free armor pen for allies. And item 3035 only gave 30% armor pen. Really screwed tanks with juggernauts and adc reworks but they never reworked tanks.

GigglesO1 votes

I'm pretty sure it was only 25%... and there was only breally brutalizer for flat pen. IT spelt leet with its cost.

Executioner2 votes

It was never 25% total armor back then. It really was 40% total Armor pen.

yea I just looked through patch history.

On that I agree because tanks where too powerful, I want tanks to feel like tanks but that is fucking absurd. Having damage as a main set is good because you can then adjust it based on factors that make it spiral out control although it shouldn't be 100% the focus it will just create the problems that we have now.

This thread you quoted is a joke, the math is way off, he didn't factor in the % damage increase we have now from runes and items such as item 3036.

Plus back in S2 and S3 gold income was lower and gold per second was slower, usually no one would get pass 3 to 4 full items, besides, ADCs would often build 2 defensive items if they manage to get to late game.

Another bias this thread has is that it doesn't factor the defensive nerfs Riot did to the game with the passing of time, look at item 3047 for example, and they are looking into nerfing it again btw.

So yeah, your argument is full of sht, damage has increased absurdly in the past 3 years. Damage needs to be toned down to make room for skill expression.

When the hell did they build two defensive items? Just either banchees veil or GA, not two at the same times.

You are forgetting Merc treads were core on marksmen until season 3, and 'zerkers were seen as trolling on them for years.

Additionally, in seasons 1-2 they needed at least a BV or GA, or both, and situationally a QSS against Malz, WW, Sion, Taric, Fid, Morg, etc, as they all had 2 second or longer point and click hard CC or were Morg (Morgs ult was a 2 second stun on top of her 4 second root, she could chain CC one target for 6 seconds by Q -> r1 -> r2 triggers while rooted)

So, defensive boots + 1 guaranteed defensive purchase (2 defensive items)

Or defensive boots + 1 guaranteed defensive purchase + situational QSS (3 defensive items)

Or defensive boots + 1 guaranteed defensive purchase + 1 extra defensive items (GA + BV + mercs is usually how this played out against heavy dive comps, fed midlane APC/AP assassin, or Kassadin was on the enemy team before season 4. 3 defensive items)

Or defensive boots + 1 guaranteed defensive purchase + 1 extra defensive items + situational QSS (4 defensive items, this would only happen if you were public enemy number 1 on some hyper carry with passive damage, we saw builds like this only really on Vayne and Kog, but with a protect the carry comp, this wasn't uncommon in higher level. Also, its worth noting that these ADCs would not be purchasing much crit, but would generally rush BT (it needed to be rushed as it had stacking AD and lifesteal mechanics based off kills/CS) and then an attack speed item, and would get buffed up AD/AS from their support and team. Additionally, when GA's passive is down, it would typically be sold for a damage item, then repurchased if needed, when the cooldown expired.

Additional points of GA being an MR/armor item, BV being a mana/hp/mr item, and no build path for QSS, so I know this sounds utterly ludicrous, but ADCs used to actually have to give SOMETHING up, and actually try to make MEANINGFUL decisions

They didn't have cheaper items than literally everyone else, but actually the most expensive items. If they were behind, or getting dove, they needed to invest in defense because it was actually worth more to then to survive for a bit with lower damage, to at least be able to get that damage of consistently. Y'know, like an actual squishy dps class. Since the defensive items used to be 2600g they would be worth purchasing to make sure the ADC could survive long enough to start scaling up, or NEEDED THEM TO BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE IN TEAMFIGHTS AS A SQUISHY CLASS OF CLASS CANNONS MIGHT ACTUALLY NEED TO INVEST IN SOME MEASURE OF DEFENSIVE IF THEY DON'T WANT EVERY OTHER CLASS TO EASILY BE ABLE TO SLAUGHTER THEM

Huh, interesting, that's the price point for all their AS/Crit, and armor pen items now. . . funny that, and the tank items have increased in cost to now be where the only Zeal items were, and the melee fighter/juggernaut items are at the higher price points that used to be for ADC items. . . and we no longer see ADCs needing defensive items period, as they can instead just get the way more gold efficient, cheap, and much more impactful and "fun" damage items that let them melt literally anyone in seconds. Not to mention, they now get MASSIVE amounts of damage on any of their "defenisve" (fucking LOL) items for free, and extra tacked-on benefits, like massive % damage reduction on fucking AS/Crit/MS item that give phasing for 2,600g, or up to 2,000 free magic damage to champions 2-3 times a teamfight, or nigh instant wave clear to shore up the supposed wave clear advantage APCs had over ADCs. . . on another 2,600g AS/crit/MS item. . .

Yeah well even now, getting item 3139 and item 3026 gives ADC's some form of low level of durability that still allows them to shred enemy teams, base armor on them is also too high as some only have a little less armor than some fighters which is not cool. I like the fact that ADC's now full / nearly full damage as it reflects on them being strong DPS class, but the problem that I see is that now that they have put the burden of protecting themselves on Supports and they have gotten a buff, that means that they are able to get away with building full damage that in the past would be countered like a motherfuckers by at least half-decent players. also the radio of defensive and offensive items should be a gauge on how X class functions. I don't mind if ADC's go full damage or have 1 or 2 half defensive Item if they need it, I also think they need to have a higher trade off for their damage, if they want be beastin' in damage then they have to learn that positioning is key and they can still get melted by burst, even more so by a fed enemy or a 1(2 with support) v 2+.

Yes ADC's should have the highest damage output but they should also suffer for it. another issue is that they have too many damage multipliers.

ADxASxCritxitem 3031.

Compare that to item 3089 and item 3053 and you'll see that it is the reason why they have so much damage and why armor is so useless as item 3035 will shred armor as well as HP indirectly with item 3036 and why item 3047 + item 3143 don't stop enough of their damage. ADC's already deal enough damage they need to deal less damage to feel like they have to commit to a fight but also be cautious of flank and assassins.

Damage metas are fun

Indeed playing grey screen simulator is very fun indeed! /s

Rewt2 votes

More fun than playing in a tank meta where you mindlessly slap each other till someone runs out of mana and cant keep healing.

Seriously. Id rather play Preseason 7 average ttk was 1/4 of a second than S5 ever again.

Nyarlathοtep7 votes

Are you for real now? Do you honestly prefer when everyone does almost instantly? At least at a "tank meta" you have enough time for help to come or to run away since their damage is low. That cant happen in our current situation.

GigglesO2 votes

I hate dying in .25 seconds I feel like there is nothing that you can do differently except kill the enemy in .2 seconds.

Rewt2 votes

Yes. I dont prefer to get instakilled. Because the difference is this.

During S7 positioning mattered.

During S5 it didnt matter, because if someone jumped on you, you could just walk away. no repercussions. they took off 1/2 my HP? eh i have warmogs itll be back soon enough.

thats the difference. S5 was a snooze fest. It was like you werent even playing the game.

S7 if you made one misstep you were dead. There was so much more challenge to playing the game. Every step mattered.

Also btw it can happen in league today. Honestly tanks are fucking crazy right now. All the top junglers. What are they? Oh guess what! tanks! What are the top toplaners? Tank and Bruisers! If damage was really too high it would be hard damage dealers. but its not.

People complain that damage is too high but honestly. the shit that tilts me hardest is when 3 of my teamates are wailing on a Warwick or a Nasus. We all have black cleavers and Mortal reminders and we just cant kill him. He just Walks through all of us slowly killing us. Tanks are incredible in the game right now.

Assassins are honestly in the shitter right now. Unless they get fed (like 4/0/0 fed) they arent gonna be impactful in the match. Because the tanks will just roll them. Take a day. Only play tanks. you will realize that they are incredible.

So in reality. The game is definately leaning towards tank meta. People just havent realized it yet.

Nyarlathοtep1 votes

Well boiz thats why lol became like this then i suppose. Oh and btw i think you forgot something extremely important. Now positioning matters a bit too much. A single mistep and you suddenly you are on your way to the fountain, in the best case scenario. In the worst, you are watching the deathcap. And the problem is that almost everyone can do it. Well except tanks (late only). Even some classes that arent supposed to deal burst damage. Adcs primarily. You are within their reach for a single second and they have already thrown at you 2 or 3 hits alongside their abilities ( if they can ofc). Again these guys are supposed to deal high damage over time (i mean sustained damage).

This applies to burst mages though they are victims of cdr creep ( mages as a whole had their items nerfed in terms of raw damage) . They unload their kit and in the next min (most of the times less) they have it up again. Im fine with having to watch my position. What i dont find fine is having to react to 0.25 sec and generally our current situation. Everyone deals high damage in a matter of nano seconds. Like come on. Sometimes you dont have a choice but to take that damage and you end up recalling and thus getting behind. And we all know the chances to comeback if the enemy is competent enough.

Lastly, as for the challenging part? Yeah no. There is none. Nowadays, you get fed? Congratulations! You can do it again with next to no risk! (unless you do a mistake/varies between champs) The only real danger there is jungle presence. And depending on your champ you might even 1v2! Back in the days you had to think. Now you just press mindlessly (most of the times) the skills and baam. You did enough damage to sent him to the fountain!

People hate and say tanks are op, but tanks stats are obsolete late game. They melt like ice cream late game. Unless those tanks are obviously broken. (hello ornn, prenerf) I am not totally sure why, but biggest reason imo is because there to much fcking % max. health damage. Also another reason is because 2 items completely reduces cost effectiveness of all def. stats buy 40% ---> item 3036 item 3135. I wrote about tanks, because damage outscale defense.

GripaAviara3 votes

I don't know what are you talking about. Lets take Garen or Cho. If they are 3 tank items + 2 fighter/ap items it takes me 1v1 as a full build ADC about 10 sec to kill them. That's a lot. Meanwhile if they get near me i'm dead

Executioner1 votes

Sad because true.

Northmund2 votes

Garen is Juggernaut, they all have way of sustaining in fight. W gives damage reduction, tenacity if timed right, but he can be kited easily, if he goes full damage with only BC i doubt he can kill you extremely fast with your support on your side.

About Cho you are right he is listed as a unique for a reason. I do not like him stacking HP and oneshoting my ADC. I agree on that one. He stacks most efficient stat for tanks and deals damage (guess what damage? %max. health and true)

GripaAviara2 votes

I know he can be kited, I'm not saying it's broken, I just saying they don't feel like useless paper clips late game.

That is true what about tristana? And not like she had Botrk or something. Also read what i wrote first. Game has tons of % max. health damage. If there will be tank every game, what is the point of taking anything else but, varus/vayne/kogmaw.(they melt not only tank tho :P)

True, they are suppost to take the brunt of damage in a teamfight. having %pen that strong just makes their resistances seem like a joke. Hell if you get 108 MR with item 3065 as a melee champ you only get 11 more MR. With armor you do block more damage, but the damage you take form crot more than compensates for weaker penetration.

No they weren't. They were fine except for people who played assassins/burst mages back in season 5 which was the most balance this game has been. Assassin players were crying for faster games and thats what we got. Now they are completely worthless due to adc and supports being so strong. Tanks are supposed to be hard to kill...the only people cried about realy were juggernauts because they refused to learn how to play against them and so cried for nerfs. I've yet to see consistent games where tanks dominate in KDA or CS. Your bias is obvious and your logic is flawed here.

Why should a tank dominate in KDA or CS? A Tank is half of a fighter and half of a support. The original term for a tank is an INITIATOR or team fighter. Their performance is judged by winning fights. Not living through them getting kills, winning duels, or even getting farm.

That's not to say those things aren't good to have on a tank. But the tanks domination of a game is something like doing a ton of CC, absorbing damage, protecting the backline.

Are tanks unable to win teamfights? If so, there's a problem. Far more hard done by are the Fighters, who cannot win a teamfight, and cannot match the ADC kill potential either. This is why they are getting buffs. There is more fighters than any other class. And a hell of a lot of people who play them.

Logically; a tank should not win lane or win 1v1 against a Fighter easily.

Tanks should in theory be stalling when laning, they can trade, they can fight, but they shouldn't aim for kills but slowly bully a champ out of lane if and I repeat IF they play well. if a non-tank jungler comes to gank it's their job to set up a kill or get one for themselves so they can snowball and begin to win the game.

True because all that damage is gonna add up even if it's not gonna happen immediately and with sustain.

I say Facts1 votes

They just need to make new tanks items that worth 3800 or around that, something that counters on hit effects + auto attacks + blocks them too while reflecting damage as true damage. you know what i am saying? if they make legendary and expensive tank items, then all tanks will be forced to build them because they'll be their power spike in late game but when Riot doesn't make any interesting tank item that's why you see tanks rushing damage

Ok, with all those extra buffs to damage on the PBE (alongside the buff to Gragas Drunken Rage) I am starting to get a little pissed over this shit of constant damage buffing. tanks are nerfed and now armor on item 3047 is lowered, sure it's just the arnor but FFS, this is getting too much.
