Nautilus: Jungle or Support?

Just started learning Nautilus yesterday and am wondering where I should focus my attention with him, jungle or support. As a jungler, his clear times are super slow (I average 4:20 for a full first clear), but his ganks can be stellar with how he can chain CC... if you have someone to follow up and aren't going after someone like Swain who can laugh off early gank attempts with his own CC and sustain. Plus, if he falls behind, or the team as a whole does, he's not really the best at getting himself and his team back in it, or at least it wouldn't appear so to me. Oh, and he's really susceptible to counter jungling.

As a support, he seems more in his element to me, as he's sort of like the love-child of Leona and Thresh. Granted, I only tried Nautilus support in one co-op match, but with his tankiness, CC, and somewhat surprising damage output, I don't know that I've ever felt more comfortable with a support. My ADC tended to just stand there as I chained CC on the ADC and support, yet once I got ahead I could take them out myself without his help. Went 7/0/13. Our ADC went 2/3/7. 3 of his assists were completely accidental kill steals on my part, as I was fed by that point and surprised by my own strength. Which also makes me want to support as him even more, because I've seen plenty of matches where the ADC was too bad or too passive and the support, generally a Volibear or Leona, just took over thanks to their own kill potential. Sure, that would be tougher in a normal match, but the potential does seem to be there.

Also, I've been on the lookout for a proper support main, since as nice as Sona is, she's still not quite my style. Blitzcrank is closer, but I'm not the best at skill shots and if/when I miss it's trouble, given the mana costs on his Q. It also gives me a tank option besides Blitzcrank and Leona, who are often banned, when my team's too dumb to grab a tank. In the jungle, though, I just can't see a reason why I would choose him over Amumu or Sejuani if I was going the tank route. What say you all?

I've had success with him in both roles, though for support, it's pretty much mandatory to build Frozen Heart / IBG since you still need mana, and you don't get the jungle regen from monsters nor the Cinderhulk aura for mana-less clearing.

I think Naut support is very underrated, though; his passive can easily pin someone in place during a 2v2 trade, and his on-demand shield can be used to block projectiles as well as absorb damage, of course.

Ignoring Naut support is similar to Alistar, really. He'll make it a pain for you to attack his carry if he's standing in the way, along with turning into a heavy tank as the game goes on.

Good point. Even in the bot game I was using my gold for mana potions instead of health ones because I found myself going OOM so easily.

And Alistar seems much better at keeping people off your carry than locking the enemy down for your ADC to kill. I tried him in co-op as well, since I've been testing out new supports, and that was about all I could succeed in doing. Maybe in a team fight I could headbutt them into my team, but in lane headbutting anyone felt counterintuitive.

Nautilus is a beastly champ. I would recommend building health, armor, and attack speed. If I play well enough to allow this to happen, then late game it takes at least 3 champs to take him down. I've used him as support, and he ended up taking kills because of his beastliness. Giant anchor, to the face.

I recommend for a jungle build:

Blue Enchantment Devourer, Rod of Ages, Frozen Heart, Rylai's Crystal Scepter, and Randuin's Omen. If the game lasts long enough and you're feeling ballsy, get Bloodthirster as well for some self sustainment. I have found that this build for me is incredibly beastly.

Hey, as long as they die, I say. And a fed tank, whether it be a support, jungler, or top laner is never necessarily a bad thing. You can't kill them before they kill you? Victory. Won many a match with Garen because my built in sustain allowed me to just rack up the kills, even building straight tank.

Naut is a better jungler if only due to the pressure he can apply on all lanes, not just bot. His first clear is slow but once you hit 4 and have 2 ranks in your W you should be golden.

I will say, there's nothing quite as satisfying as triggering Runic Shield off of that AA animation, though.

Do you mean because of his CC and tankiness making it hard for any gank to fail with proper follow up?

Pretty much. Naut is not a damage dealer. If you play Naut as a damage dealer, you won't get far. Naut is a classical, CC-heavy tank. Between his passive, Q, E, and Ult, you can keep someone in the same space and more or less incapable of action for a solid 3 seconds. If you have follow up, they're dead. If you're alone, well, you can't kill enemies in 3 seconds. That's not what you do.

Unless you accidentally kill steal and get fed. Heh. Maybe then it's possible. Especially if you're levels ahead of them.

play him wherever and you'll find out he is not a loss
