I was just looking at champion.gg and one thing amazes me

So I was looking over some champs over at champion.gg and something finally hit me. With the right rune and mastery set ups, people in the same elo group (plat and higher) can see pretty huge swings in win rate. I mean I knew that runes and masteries were important, but for a few champs, I was surprised to see how big of a swing there was.

Leblanc - 6 points for masteries, 11 for runes Ahri - 7 points for masteries, 10 for runes Fiora - 10 points for masteries, 6 for runes Janna - 5 points for masteries, 10 for runes Jinx - 6 points for masteries, 6 for runes LeeSin - 9 points for masteries, 6 for runes

I mean sure in most cases it seems to be a small number of mains who do extremely well on some champs (Janna was pretty popular though). Still, you'd have to wonder if even the small advantage of taking something like perseverance over insight on Janna does add up to part of the reason the best players do well on a champ. Still, the small change of bounty hunter over opperssor for 10% ahri players seems to be a big deal. It seems like there are a lot of little things that the best players do that the rest of us don't, and I have to ask myself if this is one of them. For masteries, it seems in a few cases all the difference comes down to is one thing taken over something else.

Even if not, I've got a strong urge to at least update my masteries since I can't afford a new rune page for each champ I play.

Sorry, Linna but that's probably not the case. That's the trouble with statistics; they are so very good at misrepresenting things.

The important thing to look at is the number of games. They are tiny. The highest % masteries for Leblanc are only 132 games and Ahri's are 283 which looks to be like 1% Ahri's games that they sampled and like a tenth of the sample of what it is being compared to. The smaller the sample size, the easier it is for the results to be distorted by random chance. It's far easier to get higher percentages with smaller numbers

To see this, take a look at the jungler. Gragas: The highest percentage winrate starting items for him is Hunter's Machete and Refillable Potion; The apparent "best" start is taking the auto-attack boosting item on the AoE damaging,mage-tank jungler instead of the item that boosts mana and AoE. But it ends up having the highest win-rate percentage because of the size.

A 66% win-rate is just 2 wins if there are only 3 games.
