why galio is failing
he has no in lane ultimate to play around.
his 3 abilities are defined as damage / tank / mixed utility + damage / damage passive.
now looking at that, you figure bulky ap wants to go in and do his thing. but unfortunately he has no out, he just goes in. so while "in" whats he doing there, what function is he serving for the team?
if he builds damage he does a decent chunk, but it no longer kills anyone, no more pog champ after the nerfs he just got.
so you figure you need to Q once or twice before hand, sure ok, good luck with that with its range limitations and how easy it is to dodge from range. so in order to guarantee your damage you have to go in first, which is a trade due to how close and easy to hit he is. you would think you'd win the trade but you would be wrong. because of his outrageous cooldowns and the fact that the enemy mid laner, who was not 100-0'd, can get his rotations off cooldown faster and walk towards you because you cant get away, you now take a second rotation from them and their second rotation will typically kill galio unless hes itemized against them or hes left with a sliver of health at best. this is detrimental, you've put them to a quarter while you're left gimping away. galios W is an effective silence to an enemy ap mid laner, it doesn't matter if they're taunted for up to 2 seconds even, they depend on cooldowns, not auto attacks.
so now were back to galio cant win trades and he doesn't have the raw damage to 100-0 when pre nerfs he did have that capability which is absolutely bonkers, having more AP scaling on 2 basic abilities and a passive than someone like annie with her full kit.
so were back to, galio is forced to just sit back, wave clear, and let someone else spoon feed him kills or get rewarded from bad enemy play, thats not fun or interactive, theres nothing galio gets to actively do or create a situation from the mid lane ap position as hes going to die once he goes in first.
current galio should be tank oriented as a front line. theres nothing he can do as an ap mid laner that someone like ekko cant do already.
id much rather have a gimicky stun and shield than galios taunt any day of the week.
ekko mid > galio mid hands down in every way.
the only way to make galio an effective AP mid laner is to have a standalone ultimate, which he does not have.
so lets go back to tank galio, why is tank galio top lane sitting at a 43% win rate? because of his atrocious cooldowns where every other tank can perform twice their actions in relation to galio. his bases are so low now that you have to build ap to do any form of damage. hes so item dependent now to perform any function that once hes behind hes just gone, there is no wall that galio can provide, his W is just sooooo slow and sluggish and it cant compare to any other form of skill shot or instant peel mechanic which is what teams need to prevent the trist/twitch from just showing up and picking one of your carries on the spot. they've already gotten 2 autos off in the time it takes galio to start his knock up at which point it gets body blocked by literally anyone else.
galios tank abilities W + E are non synergistic. had they been combo-able on release he could have been a decent tank.
had galio been given an actual ultimate to use he may have been passable in the mid lane as another ekko or diana.
but you cant make this galio go half and half without making some abilities downright grossly overpowered to make a whole role function.
TLDR - theres nothing you can do to the kit without making part of galio overpowered and the other half worthless, its unbalanceable until you decide to design him as all ap or all tank. even in that situation where you do decide which route to take, it will be difficult as his kit does not combo well with itself.
