Why does buying Greater Stealth Totem reset CD?

Upgrading your trinkets doesn't put them on a CD if your current trinket is already on CD. However... Upgrading item 3340 to item 3361 does. I've tested it and it seems to be a 1 minute cooldown, exactly the same as the time it takes for a stack. Therefore, I assume that the item starts off with 0 stacks.

Does this make sense? NO! There is no other item in the game that starts on CD when you buy it (granted that there is no other item that has stacks with CD). But also, abilities that have stacks (and summoner 11 ) also start with 1 stack when lvling it for the first time.

This also makes it counterintuitive to upgrade your trinket when it's not on cooldown already because you upgrade your ward trinket if you need more wards. Putting it on a 60 sec cd actually harms your vision on the short term if you buy it.

So Riot, could you please make it so that item 3361 starts with:

  • One stack if your item 3340 was already off CD
  • The same CD as your item 3340 was if it was still on CD (1 stack after this)
  • The usual 2 minute cooldown if you swapped from another trinket (1 stack after this)

Sweeper upgrade does this too. It's really annoying.

It doesn't. (If I remember correctly, I think it used to, though.)

i can confirm it does go on Cool down after upgrading.

Support main, had it happen a couple games ago.

I've been wondering this as well. It's really annoying since post-9 if game is going well I totally need those wards immediately.

Upgrading a trinket should retain the current cooldown on it / reduce the time it "cooled down" from the new / upgraded trinket.

I shouldn't need to wait on a greater stealth totem, after I have already had my warding totem off cooldown.

Yeah it's pretty strange that buying an upgrade gives you a time penality for placing wards.

Because it's a different item. /thread

I have a feeling that this is a bug that comes with trinket swapping.

The Greater Stealth Totem probably counts as a different trinket, and therefore when you buy it, you are spending 250 gold to swap to a stronger trinket.

And it is annoying as hell. This must be fixed.

its for all trinket upgrades i really dont understand why the cd gets reset very dumb

Prince Seere1 votes

It's not a bug. It is treated as a new trinket.

How is an upgrade that simply recudes CD and increases uptime considered a new trinket while oracles, which gives a whole new extra effect isn't?

Prince Seere1 votes

I'm not saying that it should be, I'm just stating that it is not a bug. I agree that it should be changed so that "Upgrading" doesn't place your item 3361 on cool down.

it's on a 2 min cd? I never thought so, it always seems like 30 sec to me, but idk, i may have bad sense of time

Dr Poro1 votes

You're right (partly). It's not a 2 min cd. I tested it and it turns out to be a 60 second CD. It turns out that the trinket just starts off at 0 stacks.

its not a bug....

still needs to be changed though

For me when i buy it (sometimes) it doesn't work for me until I get both charges.. It literally still stays grey with 1 ward and it wont let me use it until when both are available... Amumu

It's probably for simplicity of coding. When you upgrade, it is actually just being replaced by a new item. They don't want you to be able to game it by placing a ward / sweeping and upgrading for an immediate ward, so they had it just go on cooldown.

I don't know of any items that build from other use items that retain their cooldown. Pretty sure BotRK and Gunblade just reset the cooldown, but feel free to prove me wrong.

I think it should be possible to code it properly. The item should be so that it automatically starts with one stack BUT retain the CD penalties that other trinkets also have (aka get 2 min penalty when you switched from another trinket line and take over the CD if your previous trinket was on CD).

Gunblade and BotRK do indeed reset. I actually killed someone once by hitting them with the active before I completed Gunblade, then ran into spawn, upgraded it, and hit them with it again to finish them off. We still promptly lost, as they were at our nexus - But I used it twice in about 10 seconds.

I made a thread about this about 3 patches ago, got near 200 up votes and got no response. Good luck with this attempt.

Might be my imagination but for me it feels like its not even consistent. Sometimes it doesnt have much of a CD and sometimes it has the "swap" CD..

Why does any trinket upgrade reset the cooldown?

My belief is that it is because the "upgraded" trinkets are coded as different trinkets within the game's programming, so the game makes your trinket go on cooldown if you upgrade, and Riot never fixed this bug.

Thanks for the many upvotes! I would really like a Rioter to answer on this, though. Even if it's just "it's too hard to code it like that, so we just keep it like this".
