Unpopular Opinion: More marksmen need reload mechanics
Hear me out: What's the difference between DotA2, which doesn't require ranged carries, and League?
If you ask me, a solid difference would be turn rates.
Turn rates make it so that kiting an enemy is significantly harder to do well. Whereas a melee champion just runs relatively straight at you, if we DID have turn rates, a marksman wouldn't be able to just turn backwards and occasionally pepper in free AAs. They'd have to retreat just as hard as the melee champion's advancing or just commit to the fight outright. This means that it'd be safer to dive in on or chase marksmen.
However, League doesn't have turn rates, which is fine, but if assassins aren't going to insta-blow them up, and tanks are gonna have their rotations slowed down, then marksmen need some sort of opening so that they don't just always pepper your face with gradually increasing damage. There's hardly a time where it's safe to approach them, so when they're on their items, they run you over. A MELEE carry being like this is one thing, since you can resort to avoiding them and flinging cc at them. RANGED carries being this way? If that's the case, what's the point of melee carries? If I have 100% up time on damage output as a ranged carry, what's the point of being a similarly squishy melee carry? It's safer to just AA from 550+ range than to have to dash and shimmy all over the joint to get AAs in at 150 range, so the very least one could do is add down time to that constant barrage of ranged dps.
Besides, mid lane is full of ranged mages, but since those mages don't rely on AAs, and instead use abilities, it allows for melee champs like Kat and Zed and Galio to lane against them easier. Why? Cause there's down time. They aren't always up. Marksmen are, and it's from a distance. A good way to allow more champs to lane against marksmen, imo, is to add ammo mechanics to marksmen as a rule, rather than an exception.
