@Meddler: What are your thoughts on a support item that restores allies' mana?

Since Soraka's rework, we presently lack any means of giving an ally a small mana booster when they need it (except for Clarity, which isn't viable). It's a real pain when your team's tank goes OOM in a fight because he/she can't build mana regeneration, and even a Frozen Heart or Iceborn Gauntlet can only increase capacity, not let you recover after you run dry.

A long time ago, we had an item called Mana Manipulator, which provided an aura of mana regeneration. It was removed because it could be bought right off the bat and made bot-lane harass compositions (i.e. Sona+Ezreal) and infinite-heal Champions like Soraka oppressive, while having little-to-no impact beyond early-game even in high-tier items. Now that regeneration bonuses are based off base regeneration, I think re-introducing an item with a mana regeneration aura would be particularly useful for sieging and extended fights.

I'd like to know what your thoughts are about a late-game item that lets you help your teammate's mana supply. Is it something that might be good to introduce? Or is mana regeneration/maintenance supposed to be up to the player from now on and not up to allies?

They killed Soraka's mana restore as a conscious choice to try and keep sustain lanes from becoming a thing, and they've been systematically chopping away at mana regen, such as moving it deeper in the utility tree. I don't think they WANT mana regen to be easy.

Stupid philosophy they're going at, then.

Part of the problem was when a lane would look like Sona/Soraka/Taric standing around tossing heals on their ADC and nothing happening bot lane for the first 5 or 6 levels, because early aggression was too easily punished. They want supports to have to choose how they spend their mana [poke, sustain, save it for peel/all-in], as opposed to just doing it all.

Never said a mana regen aura item had to be a starter item. It'd be something like Aegis, in that you need to build it.

(except for Clarity, which isn't viable)

It's viable enough if you really want it.

Too much cost. You have to give up Exhaust or Ignite as a support to use it, leaving you wide open to aggression by the enemy.

Hm.

Maybe they ought to have an item to boost ally's mana regen like item 3190 does with health.

It's not much, but it could help.

That's what I'm aiming at.

I don't see why they wouldn't at this point, considering how regen works nowadays.

It's viable enough if you want to be at a disadvantage.

For like a day there were strings for new mana items on the pbe, but they were scrapped for some reason :/

Yeah, I saw that. Nothing's come of it, though. :(
