More people would play support...

...if Riot stopped making our role intentionally as 'supporty' and helpless as possible. Seriously, stop taking supports who have some offensive capabilities and making them utterly pure utility. And make supports more interesting. And release a female support(barring Leona and 'mage supports') who isn't a healer. With cool utilities like Tahm, Blitz, Thresh, Bard, Alistar. But most of all, stop trying to make them so pure support that people feel helpless to escape, chase, kill or survive alone. Supports are becoming so pigeonholed the small playerbase who uses them are starting to move to fun roles that can do shit.

Psst: This has nothing to do with being over/underpowered. Since that is most of the comments. It's about it being the least played, least liked role because Riot controls it more than any other role. "y built damage one game? Nerf ratios! x got a kill without the ADC present? Destroy their tankiness!" And sticking them so they can only support period and are boring to play.

sona has a 57 percent win rate, supports aren't under powered, or boring, just horribly stereotyped as useless

Everyone knows it's useful, they don't play it because it's boring. Didn't even say they were underpowered either. I said they were boring. Everyone wants action, fun or at least creative abilities.

And the few with creative abilities tend to get nerfed into the ground or look dumb. And most of them, are rather helpless alone, they more and more are being designed so if they are synchronized with having somebody else near them, to the point where they are only useful around their dedicated person.

Why do people insist on replying to a comment that they already posted? Just edit it in with a "Edit:" or a "further thoughts:"

Also,

to the point where they are only useful around their dedicated person.

Like how Taric can switch his bond to anyone? Like how Soraka can heal anyone, or just everyone at once from the fountain? Like how Leona only has her cc around the adc? Oh wait, that doesn't exist. There is not a single support that binds to a person as part of their gameplay and is useless without them. Are most not effective without another part of their team around? Yes, but neither is the tank. The adc/most mids will be caught out if completely alone. Pretty much only assassins will be fine when alone, and that is because they are designed to be alone.

Sigh again, I've always played support. "Stereotyping" it as boring doesn't create instant queues for supports, and massive queues for everyone else. Feeling helpless because your ADC gave a kill away and your team is behind does. Being unable to buy items until you complete several necessary support items that have no variety choices on most supports does. I played Healer in WoW, support or specialist in HotS, support in League and healer in Perfect world. I have no problem with supporting being 'boring'. I have problems with how Riot pigeonholes supports and shuts down every off meta support item or gameplay facet they see.

Reinforce team job to ward. Game from earlier today, adc didn't place a single ward all game. Support ALWAYS gets blamed for lack of vision - truth is - adcs are the WORST warders.

Honestly don't understand why people don't want supports to be as engaging as a champ like zed, oriana, or elise and be super interesting. I get it we have tanky dudes and mostly squishy female supports. Lets make the squishy support fun to play again and the tanks actually feel tanky as well. I miss the old Leona W that actually made me nigh impossible to kill, the giant global passives that actually augmented team gameplay, and the support ults being one of the strongest moves in a game when used right. People should be afraid of supports just as much as a midlaner not just dismiss them as a minor annoyance and a free kill when they are alone.

Quite a few are. Honestly there are times that I am support and I have the enemy ADC and support back clear away from the minions because they knew if i caught them, they were going to take sever damage if not die. Enemy jungle ganks only resulted in 3 kills for us instead of 2. I have also been targetted by ultimates galor by Warwicks etc because they knew if I died, the team would go down, and sure enough if i died or could not get there in time.... 2-3 of them could take on 4 of my allies. Support role has much more of an impact than people realize. Supports often do charge in recklessly also, they get into the middle of their team and CC them, drawing all their attention..... they just often times do not have the damage to do what a Zed or Elise does.

Indeed, both would be awesome. And thank you for actually reading my post instead of thinking this has anything to do with characters being under/over powered. It's about them nerfing fun aspects, build options and making supports have so many "Link to ally" "Jump to ally" "Heal only allies" "Only allies can proc" etc type mechanics.

What your original post is about, is exactly what people have been putting their opinions on, that is the MEANING of the message that you sent out. What you were trying to achive then was completely missed by your word choicing and where you applied the focus.

Almost all "ally target" abilities can be used on minions... (Braum's Stand Behind for example), or they have a self only version for the champion itself.... (Soraka's Astral Blessing? I think is her W heal, and she heals herself with Q Starcall). You are saying they are nerfing supports into support role only when half of those supports that were nerfed were way too oppressive via the Crowd Control they had and were making absolute 0 counterplay in the lane they were in, often times 100-0ing champions with a very slight lead. What you are not stating at all is your version of "fun", fun is such a loose term. Do you like absolutely controlling the enemy so they can do nothing against you? Do you like 100-0ing an enemy champion? Do you like being able to go into a 1v5 and win? All are forms of fun people have, what is YOUR version of fun...... because that is about as clear as mud currently.

Blitz was one that I mentioned who does have some cool utilities. And he ahs damage because he was originally designed to go top not support. He was put in support because it worked well. All dedicated supports designed just for that. Have some mechanic that makes them less powerful without the ADC. Leona and Braum's passive for example. Taric's link ability. Soraka's entire design. Sona's auras.

But that isn't even the problem. They keep making supports more supporty, and less useful on their own. Which makes it so people don't want to play them. Blitz can still make plays totally alone. Soraka can only do so under extreme circumstances.

And even more importantly, they keep taking away the fun of supports. If a support is really fun, they tend to nerf them, or make it feel crippling to play them. While doing nothing to stop the heal/shield bot cancer in bot lane with other supports.

What is fun to you(doing damage and killing things, rather than feeding kills) may not be the only thing that is fun to others. I love sitting there and negating all sorts of damage with Soraka and Janna . I love scurrying away with the adc as TahmKench and Braum . I love making picks with Leona, Nami and Zilean. And I love destroying the enemy duo with Anivia, Kayle, and Zyra. In other words, I love all kinds of supporting, and exactly 0 of the changes to them have negatively affected me. Tahm has seen all sorts of nerfs reducing his effectiveness, but did I drop him? No, I just refined the situations that I would pick him in. Soraka has seen changes up the wazoo, but did I see them as horrible? No, I just adapted to what they gave me.

It's not that the support role is horrible or usless, you just hate what the support role is.

And most of those people who "make plays" make horrible plays and pull a Leona, Amumu, Wukong, Malphite, Alistar, etc into the team, sticking them exactly where they want, and are designed to be. You are being very prejudice against some of my favorite supports because they ARE fun to use, i would prefer Nami or Sona or any of those that you claim are "too supporty so they are not fun"..... because if someone plays Blitzcrank, it is 80% pull, 15% knock, 5% silence, and 200% just there because the enemy teams target him 24/7 as he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off as the ally team kills the enemy team. Those "utility and not fun" supports you talk about are the champions i find fun to play.

I main Soraka, Leona and Sona for support... again, it's the absolute least played, least liked role in LoL. Always has been, but recently they have been taking every chance to give support 'support' mechanics that make it so their power is directly tied to their laner. And nerfing any off build supports figure out. The shove them further in a corner of unfun, helplessness that makes it so most the community cringes at the thought of getting stuck with support.

You are entitled to your opinion, but you are trying to speak for all supports with your opinion and I am willing to speak up and say mine, and you are completely ignoring anyone elses opinions thinking yours is superior..... the fact of the matter is your whole arguement is you are saying you are bored with support because its more about utility and heals than any actual gameplay. Support is one of the most balanced roles there is currently, it is more about how you play than what you play. Every other role has that "pick this champion and win" champion.... how many supports are "pick this champion and win"? Tahm MIGHT be the only one that could be considered that at all, and even he is easily counter played.

give support 'support' mechanics

Giving supports support mechanics! Oh my that shouldn't be!

Seriously, if something is made to support(aka, buff allies/debuff enemies) not having "support mechanics" on them would be stupid. Do you know why? Because without those mechanics they would be mid/top/jungle. Not support. And we already have people to fill those positions, so why do all supports need to be able to flex into those roles? If you play support you should be able to have fun getting assists, not kills, warding, not cs'ing, and being a pain in the enemies behind rather than being a real threat. People like getting cs, kills, and being a threat in some way, so the support role, in which you should be doing none of those things(threat is possible, but not likely), will not appeal to them.

Alistar Anivia Annie Ashe Bard Blitzcrank Brand Braum Fiddlesticks Heimerdinger Janna Karma Kayle Kennen Leona Lissandra Lulu Lux Morgana Nami Nautilus Nidalee Nunu Orianna Poppy Shen Sona Soraka Syndra TahmKench Taliyah Taric Thresh Velkoz Zilean Zyra Xerath That is a list of all the supports in the game, listed as such either by the community or the game. Now, how many cannot kill you if you decide to go damage? Braum Janna. These are the only two that I have not seen to be able to kill when going damage.

Now, when you go support, you sacrifice damage/tankyness for team utility, that is what the support role does, so many of the people that you are complaining about can do damage and kill you, just not when they are being a support. Because supports give kills, not take them.

I main Soraka

Didn't you complain somewhere about how you didn't like how supports were forced to be healbots?

Ah, yes, here it is.

I mean everyone knows it is the least played, least liked role. Where you spend half your game following an ADC pressing heal.

If this is your view, why would you main the one champ that is NEVER going to be changed from that. Soraka = heals, that has been so since the game has begun. It is in her lore, her kit, HER VERY IDENTITY IS HEALING AND BANANAS. There are champs who don't do that, just play one of them.

Everytime somebody plays a support with damage items or off meta items. Riot nerfs their ratios, base damages or their tankiness in some manner to force them into submission again.

As a Platinum support main I can help explain this to you some. Support does not get farm and therefore gets less gold than other players. Therefore support champions have abilities that tend to work well with less farm. Usually this is in the form of heals, shields, crowd control, other utility effects (ex. bard tunnel). Generally if a support was made to have high scaling then they would not be played as a support but as a mid laner or top laner.

In simple terms if a champion that is used as a support is strong without items then they would be even more strong with items and therefore be broken as a laner thus requiring a nerf making them weaker at the support role. This forces Riot to make supports have a kit independent of their item build.

If supports did a lot of damage and had little utility they would be played in a different lane. The only way this could be different is if they gave the champ some way to get powerful without level or items that won't make them op if they get level or items.
