Are there any plans to bring Team Builder to Ranked in S5?

Yoella··11 votes·4,272 views

Riot, are there any plans to bring Team Builder to Ranked mode in S5? I feel like Team Builder is how the team should be formed, rather than everyone fighting over who goes mid and someone being forced into a support role. This would lower toxicity in the game because nobody would be forced into a role they aren't good at so they wouldn't feel singled out and also people would have better game experiences and more even fights overall.

Nobody wants to be the support who can't support and nobody wants to have the support who can't support on their team either, so why not just bring Team Builder to Ranked? This goes for all roles, not just supports.

And to all the people who are gonna qq because they spent time to "round off" their skills in all roles, boohoo. The game evolves, it needs to. Just because you put effort into something that was once necessary doesn't mean it will/should always be necessary. Team Builder is how the game was meant to be played.

Queue by role would definitely be great for ranked. Theres a few things I want to say about it. First thing is, a lot of people say there would be a lot of trolling, but anyone who wants to troll can still just troll with the current system, so that point is irrelevant. Second thing is that theres only one reason I've found for why queue by role wouldn't work, and that's to do with the queues times in high elo. Queue times for d1+ players (and especially challenger) would be wayyyyy too long. The only way around this is if they make d1+ the way it is now and have everything below it be queue by role, but then the problem is that people will get to high elo playing the role they want 100% of the time, and then suddenly not be able to.

Overall if they can find a good solution to the problem with queue by role in high elo I don't see any other reason why it shouldn't be implemented. The game would be a lot more competitive in lower elo's because people will actually be familiar with their role which almost always leads to more competitive games.

From my understanding the reason why RIOT never made this system is because they don't want to "enforce" the meta(I think). Of course the release of TeamBuilder itself contradicts this point, but I digress. Anyways I do agree with your points. One of the big problems would be that peoples proficiency with one role would be incredibly high, but would blow at everything else. This of course can happen in the current system too, so I feel its slightly negligible. Toxicity wise, I feel no matter WHAT RIOT does players who act this way will still misbehave regardless of what system is in place, so it doesn't make too much of a difference. In regards to ranked, I am okay with the current system as I feel players should have enough general knowledge to be able to perform in ANY role in ANY scenario. I feel ranked is more a place to improve your skills in a competitive environment, not just endlessly play one role over and over.

A counter point I had to this being implemented before, though, was that you being able to pick your role could actually have people be even MORE toxic towards you. If you were able to pick your role, but then say you lose and feed, I feel the possible backlash from your teammates could possibly be higher, as you CHOSE your role. At least with the current system, you can kind of have an out with "oh ____ was banned" or "this isn't my main role" which might help you on an emotional level, but if you actually got to CHOOSE and then lose hard, I feel it could hurt you more then now. Not saying that I sort of don't like the idea of implementing this system, just thinking of counter arguments.

Toxicity will always exist, and what you described will 100% happen. Whether or not most people would prefer such a system after it is implemented is another thing entirely. People are always eager for change but don't always like how change is expressed. All in favor of the OP's suggestion should brace themselves for longer queue times since there's an undeniable usage level difference between the more popular roles and the other ones.

As someone who already uses Team Builder in unranked constantly, I am aware of this, and of the fact that it will likely be longer the further up you climb the ranked ladder. Maybe for ranked you can que for 2 or 3 of your best roles, like Mid, Jungle, and Support that way the system could match you quicker and easier to any of those roles.

Well if you are doing Ranked and you choose to play a role you aren't good at then you kinda deserve some kind of backlash. Nothing major, I hate toxicity more than pretty much anyone, but a slap on the wrist of sorts. Playing roles you aren't used to is what Unranked is for. So I don't really think that counter argument holds much water. But I appreciate the feedback, thanks.

The same problem though stems from how teambuilder is designed. Right now it measures you MMR with each champ so are you now going to do the same with each champ in a ranked environment? How do you tell the difference between a tanky support player and a mage support? With the different variables that Teambuilder takes in its hard to actually gear a system that keeps the overall design of teabuilder without making it something its not. To make it a real thing it would have to be a ranked Blinds. Banning ofr this mode would literally be a Ranked 5v5 teams. No reason to have 2 different ques for the same thing.

Honestly its Solo Que and you need to be proficient enough at everything. Looking at my rank being gold I'm a gold player. I'm not a gold support/mid/Adc/ect. I'm a gold player and that means you have to take in EVERY role and not just one. Even Challenger players are forced into roles they don't like. Oddone being a jungle main doesn't only play Jungle. He is a Diamond Jungler because thats what role he plays by far, but its not the only role. Its fine if you want to play 1 role and go play teambuilder, but keep it to normals only and not ranked or go form a 5v5 team. At this point in time there are a ton of people looking/recruiting for teams.

Why not? If you're saying that people who play Ranked are typically better players than those who play Unranked then, generally, you're right but that's not always the case. You'd just have to get really good in Unranked and then expect the skill jump into Ranked to make things more difficult. If you're bad in Unranked then obviously you're going to be worse in Ranked, but if you're great in Unranked you'll at least be good in Ranked. And from there you'll grow as you climb the ladder.

How do you tell the difference between a tanky support player and a mage support?

Maybe, oh I dunno, ask them? "Hey Phillip are you going tanky or not?"

I really don't see what you mean here, it's sausage to me. The existing Team Builder mode would fit perfectly into Ranked mode, and if they tweaked it to allow you to select your 2 preferred roles and match you to either one of those it would be even better. It wouldn't be "a Ranked Blinds" mode, it would be Team Builder. If you've ever played it you'd know it's completely different.

Honestly its Solo Que and you need to be proficient enough at everything. Looking at my rank being gold I'm a gold player. I'm not a gold support/mid/Adc/ect. I'm a gold player and that means you have to take in EVERY role and not just one.

This "proficient enough at everything" is exactly the idea I'm trying to combat here. Someone who just wants to start Ranked shouldn't have to get to a high skill level with all 5 major roles JUST so that they don't end up ruining their teams game and getting flamed.

Yeah when you reach Gold you should be able to play all roles with some proficiency, and at challenger you should be great with everything, but at Bronze and Silver you really shouldn't be expecting everyone to be able to play everything well.

Its fine if you want to play 1 role and go play teambuilder, but keep it to normals only and not ranked or go form a 5v5 team.

I don't see why you would say that. Someone who's adequately skilled in most roles but excels in one of them doesn't have the right to play Ranked without risk of ruining everyones game? How many threads are made per day complaining about some Jungle or Support who couldn't do their job in Ranked? A lot of them. Team Builder in Ranked would cut that down significantly, giving everyone a smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience. What you said makes you sound like an overzealous Dad at his sons middleschool baseball game who expects everyone to play like they're pros.

Team Builder would eliminate a lot of toxicity and improve the game experience at the same time. The only thing that needs to change is the mentality that everyone should be able to play every role by Bronze 1.

This isn't how Teambuilder measures your MMR though. It takes Champion X a rates you based off that 1 champion not the role/position/lane/etc. You would have to keep the same basis for teambuilder. So the only real benefit you would get is proving you are the best X player. Since each change in champion would require you to play at a different elo and starting you off roughly the same MMR thus making you climb the later again, and again, and......again for every champion in every role.

Maybe, oh I dunno, ask them? "Hey Phillip are you going tanky or not?"

This isn't about the player, but the rating as described above.

This is the essence of what Ranked is. Again its not a measure of how good of a support/adc/Top/Mid/Jungle, but how good of a player overall through all roles. If you can't play each role to a basic extent then there are really on 2 outcomes. First you don't play ranked until you can play at least 2 champs in each role, preferably 3. Second you get stuck in low elo. Thats what its meant for. Being an ADC main only and unable to play anything else is a core fault in low elo players. Its not really going to help anyone with some skill to do this, but let them climb a scewed ladder that doesn't read properly of a players actual skill. We shouldn't be giving breaks to bad players for being well, bad.

How to you plan to implement a ranked system at all? How do bans work? Picks? Role selection? If the only real change to the current Ranked is that you get to chose your role then seriously go get your own team and play. Its pointless to make a whole que for a small change that according to you only benefits low elo players the most. Since higher elo players wouldn't have the need for it except to test their skill as the best X champ.

You wouldn't have to, Riot could change that one part of Team Builder for the Ranked mode.

How do bans work?

Bans work by each "team" selecting their bans ahead of time, and then it matches you to another team that doesn't have your banned champions. And if someone chooses a champion with an exceptionally high ban rate like Yasuo or Alistar, you can either ask them to change or kick them from the group. Simple as that. I can hear you now, "but at high elos the games will take forever to match that way". Alright then, how about if after a certain amount of time your team hasn't found an opponent yet your team will get a notice of the closest match for you, and will ask if it's okay to fight them / if you want to change a role.

Picks? Role selection? If the only real change to the current Ranked is that you get to chose your role then seriously go get your own team and play.

Picks and Role selection are chosen ahead of time.. that's the whole reason behind Team Builder in the first place. If you need to ask that then you must have little or no clue what Team Builder is. As far as "getting your own team and play" not everyone has 5 people they can play with, or a schedule that allows for playing with a team. A team would require you to play at the same time, and for a lot of people that isn't always an option.

But that's why they call it Team BUILDER. Because you are getting your own team and playing, just like you suggested we do, albeit the team is temporary. It's a team without the hassle of always having to play at the same time as eachother.

Onegarion1 votes

The problem is though you can't do that for ranked. Again its a glorified blind pick then. Since you can't really set up a strategy based on the other team. Its a blind mode and thats about it. You can't decide well no you can't be on the team now because then you would have to redo picks and teams. There are way to many holes and vulnerabilities to this system that makes it much more of a headache than actual productive.

Its called team builder to build a team yes, but if you want to do that in ranked then do it in Ranked 5v5. Same concept with the same players. Its how its should be with a faulty system you describe that would be a nightmare to join. Honestly if you can't get a group of 5 people then deal with it. I'm in that boat, but I'm not crying for ranked teambuilder because I'm not ignorant and can see the obvious flaws that ruin the system. Go play solo que and get better. Stop complaining and deal with it.

I also like the bulk of my comment isn't considered so either that means you have no response or know I'm right

No I just didn't think it dignified a response / I realize people will have different opinions on this matter just like any other, and I don't want to keep arguing after already replying multiple times and without changing your opinion. Which is fine by the way, different opinions are what moves the world forward. I simply don't wish to waste the time trying to change an opinion that I cannot change, which is completely okay.

So no you're not right, but you're not strictly wrong either, yours is an opinion just like mine and everyone else has an opinion too be it the same or different from your own.

Now to address your response, likely for the last time. I want to play, not go back and forth on the forums all day.

The problem is though you can't do that for ranked.

Why not? Why couldn't you do that for ranked? Sure you can't do it YET, but if Team Builder were implemented for Ranked play you would be able to. Thus this thread and what I've been saying this whole time.

Again its a glorified blind pick then. Since you can't really set up a strategy based on the other team. Its a blind mode and thats about it.

It's not blind pick at all. Have you even done TB mode? It's not exactly like the current Ranked system but it's far from Blind Pick. Just like how TB isn't quite like "blind pick" Unranked. It's a different mode. That's the point. No, you cannot see what your opponents are choosing, but YOU can pick what YOU want to do, and not have one person forced into Support and another hesitantly trying Jungle. That's the point of this mode.

Now I suppose you're going to try to drive home the point that that's "not how ranked works" but maybe it's how it should. LoL may have DOTA influence, but it isn't DOTA; that is to say that no champion completely counters the other. Ranked shouldn't be about who can get the most counter champions to the other team and happen to have people who can play them well, it should be about playing the Champion or Champions you're best at and having to overcome any and all opponents you may encounter. That's what makes someone good; being able to take any situation and turn it into a positive one, not just choosing to play Zed because the enemy team chose Veigar. Real gameplay comes from playing off your teammates strengths and your opponents weaknesses in a fight, not trying to gain an artificial advantage from choosing a counter champion. While that's strategic, it's not what LoL is about. If you really want to say you're the best then you've gotta shine through anything and play smart, not just select an easy counter.

You can't decide well no you can't be on the team now because then you would have to redo picks and teams.

Again, do you even play Team Builder mode? That's not at all how it works. You're missing the entire point of this thread.

There are way to many holes and vulnerabilities to this system that makes it much more of a headache than actual productive.

There are holes and vulnerabilities in every system. Trolls can troll in the current system just like they could in TB. Cheaters could still script in the old system just like they could in the new one. If you want to make any mode have less vulnerabilities the answer lies in the games actual coding and with things I can only begin to understand, not in Team Builder mode itself.

Its called team builder to build a team yes, but if you want to do that in ranked then do it in Ranked 5v5. Same concept with the same players.

You can't chose your role and champion in Ranked 5v5. If two people want mid or top then somebody's going to have a less enjoyable game because of it. And if they're pushed into a role they aren't used to then it will only lead to toxicity and a far less enjoyable experience for everyone. So why wouldn't you want a system that makes everyone happy? Continued next post... 1/2

No I just didn't think it dignified a response

What? You ignored a strong majority of what I said and you still choose to not address a bulk of what I say. You nit pick at little things that let you bash what I'm saying. You don't address most of my explanation, but take a small form of what I say. Thats not even a discussion.

Why not? Why couldn't you do that for ranked? Sure you can't do it YET, but if Team Builder were implemented for Ranked play you would be able to. Thus this thread and what I've been saying this whole time.

I'll say this ONCE more since its the single most ignored line by you. Ranked should be the skill of you the individual player across all roles. That shows exactly how good of PLAYER you are and not how good you are at each individual role. I see no reason in showing that you are a good Caitlyn only. It doesn't matter to me because you then hit BoxBox syndrome where you get that banned agaisnt you and you suck. That is not a good or fair comparison of skill. Showing you can play 2 champions well in 1 role doesn't mean anything. Being able to play multiple champions over many roles does.

Again, do you even play Team Builder mode? That's not at all how it works. You're missing the entire point of this thread.

Yes I do play and I can kick someone out of my team if I don't like what they pick. Same goes for any other teambuilder related system. You said it yourself that the team can kick a player. NO ranked format SHOULD HAVE THIS. There should never be a way to remove someone from your team for someone else. Its beyond unfair/broken.

There are holes and vulnerabilities in every system.

I'm not talking bout trolls or cheaters who write scripts. I'm talking about the holes with kicking players and the bad way of working out picks/bans. I'm talking about how you can't have the plan you want with going into a game with 5 champs and then do banning. Thats a pointless system. There is no sound reason for this decision. Why would you then repick? If you go in with bans first there is no real benefit. Sure people get their role, but the ranking system is flawed at its core letting people pick what their role is from the start. This is the biggest exploit the system not DOESN'T have.

You can't chose your role and champion in Ranked 5v5.

I meant to say Ranked 5v5 Teams. Since this is the ultimate goal that your system is designed for. There ARE people out there. Just because you ahvent taken the time doesn't mean they aren't.

Part 2/2

Its how its should be with a faulty system you describe that would be a nightmare to join.

Try out Team Builder, seriously. It's far from a nightmare, it's ideal. A nightmare is having someone who can't play their role on your team.. or to BE that person.

Honestly if you can't get a group of 5 people then deal with it. I'm in that boat, but I'm not crying for ranked teambuilder because I'm not ignorant and can see the obvious flaws that ruin the system.

I'm not "crying" for Ranked Team Builder either, I'm just saying it would be a really great idea. I'm certainly not ignorant, and these "obvious flaws that ruin the system" seem to not really be flaws at all. Most are just you not understanding how Team Builder works, and the others are just your personal opinion, which as I stated everyone is entitled too. Yes even me.

As far as not being able to get a group of 5 people... that's exactly what TB does for you. It finds 5 people just like you and me who can't find 4 others to play with and puts us together. I can't imagine anything wrong with that kind of system.

Go play solo que and get better. Stop complaining and deal with it.

I'm actually quite the fantastic player, check out my match histories. Yes it's Unranked but as I previously stated I already expect it to be more difficult in Ranked, so I expect to just be a good player there if I'm fantastic here. I'm not complaining, I'm simultaneously trying to defend myself from you and explain my point while trying to understand yours. You're the only one complaining about anything here, even the thread itself is a suggestion not a complaint. If you see it as a complaint.. then I can't help you there. You're simply wrong about that.

So stop item 3070 item 3070 -ing on my thread and realize that nobody is trying to fight with you, I'm only trying to explain an idea/suggestion I had, not start WWIII with you on Riots forums.

I have tried team builder and do play it multiple times a week. It isn't a good model for a true test of skill in ranked style play.

Normal ques do the same thing so I'm not sure why it matters where you get it other than you can't bear the thought of playing something other than the role you want with the champ you want. I don't see why it should be that way? Low elos need to be exposed to every role with multiple champions. There is a reason that the highest of players are able to get away with only playing 1 champion mainly (BoxBox). They are high enough where everyone knows them and they are beyond good at that champ. Lower elos need to understand how to play every role before they are "allowed" to join that prestigious high rank of players. While ofc there are players that main champions each high level player can tell you a good bit about the other lanes and how to play them.

High players aren't engrained in 1 role with 1 champ and thats it. Hell looking at Nightblu3 thats a true player of skill even from 1 role. He plays multiple champions and again doesn't always get jungle even though he is really good.

I'm not trying to fight with you, but get you to understand the issues with ranked TB. You seem to ignore everything and think its going to be a Utpoia though that has the exact same issues as ranked right now.

Kiharon2 votes

They wouldn't have to and shouldn't copy everything from unranked team builder if they bring it to ranked. They could have you select only a position and not a champion or role when queuing and measure MMR only by the position.

Once the queue pops, you could go through most of the current solo queue ranked experience: bans, picks, the game. The only thing that would be missing is the part where two people call the same position and the first pick takes it before either of them without saying anything you have to figure out who is going where.

You need to be proficient enough at everything if you want to be ranked under the current system, because that's how the system is. The proposal is to change the system or add a new one so that is no longer the case. I have no idea if there would be enough people to maintain reasonable queue times with both the current queue and this hypothetical new one as separate queues.

Playing on a 5's team is the ultimate form of the game, but it takes coordination to set up a team and get people on at the same time.

Onegarion1 votes

I don't see this as a benefit though. There is a huge difference between being a ranked player and a ranked Insert Role. I dont' think its important to be the best Insert Role when its considering low elo players especially as the OP has said is his overall emphasis (may be in the other part with him). It doesn't really help the ranked system at all. It takes away from what makes it what it is.

Honestly I never argue over my role. Those who do that shouldn't play ranked at all. I'm typically fill or pick whatever role I want if I'm high enough (usually Support) in the pick order. While it is an evil of solo Que it really only affects low elo players and trolls. Very rarely do I ever get flack for picking the role that I'm good at. THere are duo's that get angry with me, but when bot lane wins lane its hard for them to say anything.

I really don't think it would be viable as an option for players to work this way in a ranked setting. If for some reason Riot would implement it I would hope that they would take away season rewards for it. I don't think its fair to give them rewards when they essentially get to set it up and pick when they do and don't like it. Thats not how a ranked solo Que should work. It games the system and is not a fair representation of what a persons skill truly is.

A fair way to compare your skill in 1 role is to go through team 3's and 5's to be fair to all.

Kiharon2 votes

I've seen enough people talking about being "<insert high rank> <insert position or champion> mains" to suspect that at least some people outside of low tiers still think in terms of a single position rather than a player as a whole.

I would argue that this would be no less fair than the current system and only irons out some of the randomness. As nice of an ideal as being a well-rounded player before starting ranked sounds, the reality is there are players that aren't and have no intention of becoming one. If we can remove that random element from the system, it should lead to a more even spread of games.

I do not consider ranked teams to be a fair way to compare individual skill in a role. Ranked teams are about comparing your team coordination. This can be seen at the professional level where teams may not have the "best individual laners" yet still perform will.

Onegarion1 votes

The key here though is that those players have earned by playing the other roles and establishing themselves as known players. People like me and you haven't. Its a right to be able to do that and it shows real skill. You have to learn how to play every role before you master you own. You can't play only top champs and expect to win. YOu have to know about many others and play them.

Ranked teams isn't a fair way to compare individual skill, but it gives you the one role that you want. If you want to be the best X player then go play teambuilder, but a ranked form does nothing to prove anything. Those are held by independent tournies that groups hold.

It would iron out some randomness, but with the added element of being able to kick players it becomes much more than a simple team builder. It becomes a ground for more toxicity and massively increased time. If you reallyw ant to build a team do Ranked teams.

Kiharon1 votes

Ah, that's what you meant by picking what they do and don't want. My vision of ranked meets team builder doesn't include kicking people. To me, the only element that I want to see that was inspired by team builder is picking the positions before you queue rather than during picks and bans. In that sense, it may be a bit of a stretch to call it "bringing team builder to ranked", but any more and it would be to far from what I consider to be the ranked experience. (Maybe this wasn't what the OP had in mind, but it sounds close enough that it's worth keeping here and not making a whole new thread.)

Onegarion1 votes

That was in reply to the OP as well. I've gone off in another portion with him about it and he calls for both this and to pick champs then do bans and then repick. Not sure how it works, but thats what he is asking for from what I understand. A lot of the comments are actually probably with some more info than what I'm discussing with you. Posts with OP are much longer lol

Yoella1 votes

I feel I should clarify, as indeed our posts have gotten long. The only reason I suggested including the kicking system to Team Builder in Ranked mode would be to combat trolls, like tank Ashe. There would be a limited number of kicks allowed per TB session (like, 1) so people couldn't take an hour and a half to try and make the perfect team.

and he calls for both this and to pick champs then do bans and then repick

That's not quite what I meant. What I intended to suggest in this thread was the ability to 1) choose your champion/preferred role ahead of time (maybe just your role at higher tiers), 2) Without having been matched to opponents yet you select your bans. The game then matches you against another team which does not contain your banned champions. If after a minute no such game is found the system will notify you and suggest the closest match (example: You banned Amumu, Annie, and Alistar, and this team has Amumu) and will ask your team via vote if that is okay to accept. If you do not accept you may either change your selected bans or continue waiting. This could change at higher tiers to account for naturally longer ques and fewer opponents.

NoMonku1 votes

I meant it more as you pick your "best" role and you get dumped in it.

Kiharon2 votes

I would like to see the option to queue for multiple positions, but not necessarily all, at all tiers. When you launch in, the system would simply tell you which position you were assigned for this game. This would incentivize rounding out your ability with potentially shorter queue times. If you really can do only one role, then you suffer the consequences (longer and longer queue times) as you rise through the ranks.

Yoella1 votes

I have mixed feelings about this post. The only thing I disagree with is punishing players for not being able to play all 5 major roles at a ranked skill level. While I think the player should know two of them really well (of course more would be even better, and expected at higher tiers) I don't see the need for the average player who wants to play ranked to be forced to extensively practice all roles with at least 2 champions each (bans) just to participate in Ranked mode.

Kiharon2 votes

My suggestion was certainly not intended as a punishment. I was simply pointing out that you would end up with shorter queue times if you were queuing for multiple roles. Your comment seems to be the same sort of idea I had.

Yoella1 votes

Ah I see, I apologize for misunderstanding what you had meant. I thought you meant that it would automatically assign you a role, not specifically out of a list you qued for. Thanks for clarifying +1 :)

Kingsgrave2 votes

I do like the idea of queuing for a Role for Ranked, but I dunno. We would get like no supports in Gold and below.

Yoella2 votes

But what's better, waiting for a support who knows how to support, or forcing an ADC main to play someone like Sona and have him and the team rage at eachother the entire game because he's terrible?

FyreNinja2 votes

It is a super possible option, if Riot listens to it's players. I have heard several ideas for the banning phase, and I think it is definitely possible to incorporate that in. I would play ranked so much more if I knew that I could play anyone I wanted.

Team builder takes into account one's experience with a champion and the position played (adjusted matchmaking), which could add a wonky element to ranked matchmaking.

Because then you would either need 2 separate ranked queues(and the team builder one would be viewed as "fake" and a joke) or force everyone to use Team builder. Also, queue times would skyrocket(like 30mins in mid elo, up to 3 hours in master or challenger). Not to mention that there's no real way to force someone into a role. You can queue up as a support because the queue times are shorter and then just go mid. It's a stupid idea for a competitive game and there's a reason that other competitive mobas don't do it.

As is? I hope not.

I like the concept of teambuilder, but finding an ADC, support, and jungle is always a PITA. Everyone wants to be mids and tops. That's why I stopped using it. It's actually easier for me to be a mid or a top in ranked than it is to wait for 10 minutes in teambuilder because every ADC, jungler, and support hits find another game when the other 2 slots aren't taken.

Only downsides I can think of is, It's blind pick and no banning phase. Other than that I agree
