The real reason why gp is disabled

SantanaTheSlick ··23 votes·24,361 views

“Gangplank is dead” is just a silly joke that silly Riot is telling for now. He’s actually currently disabled because of a specific character interaction bug with Draven, apparently found by user “TheKarthMan” on Reddit. His post about the bug below:

“So friendly champions can attack GP’s barrels. It won’t set them off though. Due to this, a GP can put a barrel in a safe spot for a friendly Draven to stack his passive by continuously catching axes. Then all Draven needs to do is cash in by getting a kill.

I’m sure this is unintended, and I didn’t see anyone mentioning it.”

TheKarthMan also apologizes about getting Gangplank temporarily disabled. :P In light of this, one could say that it was actually DRAAAAVEN who murdered Gangplank! But I'm sure he'll be reenabled soon enough.

so draven stacking passive off of barrel isn't a bug?

Zair Umbras1 votes

It's a bug that was brought up on the PBE, but it's not game breaking. So what if Draven can stack his passive on the barrel? You already stack it off minions and champions, so why waste your time stacking on a barrel when you could.. you know.. kill a minion and get two stacks, one for killing, one for catching.

you can stack for free during the first 2 minutes of the game before minions spawn

Zair Umbras2 votes

Yeah, and none of those stacks mean anything until you actually get a kill and since GP is usually top, you'll have to walk 30s to lane first and stack around the turret so you're not late to lane. You already can't leave base for the first 20s. So that's 50s off the first 2 minutes, leaving you with only a minute and ten seconds of stacking. In 70 seconds at his base AS of .679, you can get in a MAX of 48 stacks. If you manage to get out the gate and say you have a whole minute and a half, 90s of farming... That's 61 stacks. But these stacks are useless until you get a kill. Completely and utterly useless UNLESS you get a kill, so not only are they low to begin with, but you have to be capable of getting a kill before getting killed.

Overall, it's not really much of an edge... It's not gamebreaking... At all. Tahm was able to eat his allies and KILL them for GOLD... Like, he could actually kill them. Tahm was never disabled though and his own form of gold was much more reliable and could actually be considered game breaking.

you could stack on fountain

Zair Umbras1 votes

Yeah, but barrels only last for 60s and unless you have a GP support, which is giving up pretty much all kill potential to make stacking his Q work, GP can't B every single time Draven can to let Draven stack them at the fountain. Think logically for a moment. His barrels aren't permanent structures that last forever (specifically lasting 60s) and they have a rather long recharge time early on, 18s without CDR to be exact!

90 seconds of farm, as you quoted earlier, is very significant. Every minion wave is significant. Don't underestimate his ability to pick up an early kill, and cash in those stacks.

That being said, Rengar's bug is pretty significant with it too. I imagine things like Xin can heal off it, ectect as well.

Zair Umbras1 votes

90 seconds can total about 60 stacks. Farming a minion wave could potentially give much more because each minion will give a minimum of 2 stacks because you get 1 stack per minion kill on top of the stack for catching the axe.

Rengar hitting it is mostly awkward and could be used strategically to help enhance synergy between him and GP, though it wouldn't be gamebreaking just like Draven getting about 60 stacks isn't going to be gamebreaking. 120 gold isn't as much as you want to think it is after all.

I really don't know why anyone would think Draven getting 120 gold after he kills a target is gamebreaking, especially when it only applies to the first kill IF he kills a target BEFORE dying. If he dies, then the entire bonus he got is wasted. If he gets a kill, he gets 120g. Equivalent of about 8ish minions, which could put him farther ahead, but if you think about it, he gets 50 base already per kill, so it's not a HUGE amount.

you can wait in base for 1 minute, and drop a 2nd barrel. thats 2 minutes of stacking with no loss.

you can leave fountain the moment minions spawn which i think is 1:30, so you can get 1:30 of farming without missing farm. and GP can still get to top lane

Yes, a minute and thirty. That's 90 seconds. 90 seconds at .679 AS is about 61 attacks, which means IF you start AS SOON AS YOU SPAWN and get off one last hit as you walk off the platform, you can get 62 stacks. 62 stacks is 124 gold. That's... almost negligible.

Dang, you two had a very long conversation on this.

Frankly, Zair Umbras is right. Yes, Draven can get extra gold and I'm sure it's an unintended bug, but all the numbers lead to it being nearly nothing.

If Gangplank is top, you get max 124 gold as Zair said. 124 ONLY IF you get a kill before you die.

If Gangplank is support, he has low potential to do anything as his ult is never going to get upgraded and his q isn't going to get him any gold, while his e doesn't empower allies anymore so he can't help his ADC out other than a slow. The only thing he really brings to benefit his ADC (in this example, Draven) is that slow and some damage. Sure, Gangplank has ult to offer but he could do that from top lane as well. All the while, Draven could just be throwing axes at minions and harassing champions and be getting the exact same number of stacks, probably more for minion kills. It would benefit Draven more to have another support that brings more to offer bot lane to help him out.

I'm not saying you're wrong to think this bug should be fixed, any time someone gets extra gold it already gives a team an advantage they shouldn't have. However, in this case the gold lead isn't enough to hold a game up. If a Draven/GP wins in that matchup, it wasn't because of 124 gold from stacks, it was from playing better than the enemy team.

even if you only get a few stacks, that is a huge head start if you end up getting a kill. also You underestimate support GP. Try item 3097 on him

3TWarrior1 votes

gangplank runs teleport a lot of the time too and his barrels aren't limited by distance, so, he could even place one in your lane and you could hit it behind tower if you want

but, consider the implications of actually getting it stacked, 30 seconds is 15 free auto attacks or 30 gold, so in the first minute of gameplay he can get 30 stacks or a 60 gold lead on a kill in addition to what he stacks in lane

if draven happens to run teleport, at level 2 he gains a massive attack speed buff for every axe he catches, with a barrel in the nexus, suddenly you might double your number of stacks and teleport back

it would be even more gold potential than gangplank's gold

Zair Umbras1 votes

But it wouldn't be worth the hassle of wasting a teleport nor would it make for much extra gold. Each stack is only 2g and if you're under turret, you can easily get stacks off minions. If you're pushed to THEIR turret, you should be taking advantage of the enemies by throwing repeated axes. The one thing about Draven is he doesn't suffer the same gang-bang gank issue that most immobile carries suffer since he's got a speed boost and a knockback that also slows on top of the fact that he does HUGE amounts of damage, especially so against most junglers early on. He's one of my own favorite ADC's because of his damage output. It's similar to Graves where if you get your lead, your opponent is as good as gone. There will be no return regardless of ganks.

So you are disabling a champion, just for the lolz? Really?

HaugheyPuck997 votes

Please don't think I'm calling you a liar when I say this, but I feel like if that were the case then it would just make a lot more sense to temporarily disable Draven instead, especially since GP's rework was not too long ago and people are still trying him out. But then again, it could be something in the coding for the barrels rather than Draven's axes, in which case it would make more sense to disable GP.

Sachabot7 votes

Why would they disable Draven? The interaction bug is in GP's code, not Draven's. It makes more sense to fix the problem (and maybe check for a few others just to be safe) than it does to write an exception and risk leaving other problems up.

HaugheyPuck992 votes

Because to me that seems like the type of thing you'd have to intentionally do with Draven. It's more punishing people who just like playing GP rather then punishing the people who are intentionally abusing the bug. You do make a fair point about risking other bugs if you try to fix that while leaving him up, but I just don't think it looks very good on Riot's part if Bilgewater's main champ is disabled during the Bilgewater event. I have to give Riot credit though, they made it fit nicely with the lore's timing.

I'm glad that someone else managed to find the actual reason Gangplank was disabled. He'll probably be back in a few days.

HaugheyPuck992 votes

Idk if we can say for sure if that's the real reason GP is disabled though. Riot says its just because he died in the story but they could just be saying that for a number of reasons. Like maybe they don't want to look bad about having messed up on the coding for the only ability they changed on his kit (aside from his ult but those were minor changes in comparison), or they could just be messing with us. Maybe they were joking when they said its not because of a bug and they thought people could tell they were kidding.

Either way, hopefully they'll re-enable him soon. My guess is they'll do it at the same time they release the next act of the story.

Rubber Jesus2 votes

If Draven is disabled, aren't you punishing people for playing Draven when they weren't abusing the bug, as well?

Just saying, reverse logic.

Also, this allows them to test more interactions with the Barrel. Can Annie stack spells on it in a bush, only to pop out with a Tibbers+stun? The enemy won't be expecting it since they assume she has nothing to stack it on, and a literal Q Barrel + W + E + Q Barrel would be a fast buildup without the enemy thinking it could be done. Does this mean we disable Draven and Annie, if that's the case? Or can Yasuo prep his Q with it? If so, should they disable him too?

They would most likely disable GP, and then test interactions with each champion that has the ability to do this kind of thing, while altering the code to make a fix. Disabling Draven does nothing to stop any of the above. It only hurts Draven players who were not exploiting it, and makes them wonder why they can't play Draven due to a bug that isn't in his code and only shows he is working as intended.

HaugheyPuck991 votes

Yeah I guess I can't really argue with that.

junglerboy163 votes

I'm betting the reason they chose GP over Draven is that act 3 came out at a convenient time for them to pull a "GP is DEAD!" publicity stunt with a well timed disable, and then they just bluff it off that he was always gonna be disabled.

macromite1 votes

there was a bug where kench could literally team kill, it still might be live, and he hasn't been disabled

junglerboy161 votes

It's probably rare enough that they felt comfortable leaving it for a patch cycle or two instead of disabling and hot-fixing the patch.

This bug that they're saying GP had is very easy to do and also extremely easy to exploit (simply stack free gold on Draven and profit—literally), which is probably why they chose to disable him.
