Is there a reason that no abilities increase dmg nonlinearly per rank? (e.g. no 10/20/40/80/160 dmg)

Seems like it'd be a useful lever to make a champion stronger at certain points in the game. Maybe make the first few ranks more impactful for supports and then fall off, or make a scaling mage weak early and stronger late. Is there a reason we don't see it?

There is one ability that sort of does. Taric's Q doesn't change in healing or scaling at all. It just increases how many charges of it you have. The way his kit works, you are pretty much guaranteed to always have 2 charges meaning that going from rank 1 to rank 2 doubles the healing done.

I think part of the reason for linear scaling is to give options. If there was exponential scaling on any ability in a champion's kit, it would be stupid to not max that skill first every single game.

The AP/AD (or other stuff in a few cases) ratio on the ability is largely the lever they use to adjust scaling, along with the magnitude of the base damage. Stuff with high base damage usually has not so great scaling, so it results in those champs being early game, and vice versa.

It would seem to break a champion. I mean it could cause a teamfight to go the other direction rapidly just because the losing champion leveled up and got that massive powerspike. Aside from ultimates, that should be prevented.
