Auto fill is a less versatile version of first pick. Still punishes having support as backup role.
Just using my season 5 stats I played 170 ranked games
I got Irelia 84 games which is 49.41%
I got Janna for 42 game which is 24.71%
Between my 2 go to choices it was a 74.12% chance of getting the positions I wanted.
Yes I preferred to play Irelia most of the time but when i did not get top I volunteered to play support since I had noticed that it was a reliable position to be able to get a lot of the time when I was unable to get my preferred position.
I had to play ADC a grand total of 3 times during season 5 which is the position I most try to avoid. 1.764%
This might be scewed more for the players who refused to support at all costs but this system seemed to work itself out and people knew what to expect.
Now with auto fill players who hate playing support at all costs have to play it more often. And the lack of communication about positions in champ select is just making it harder to get out of it even if someone who likes top, is alright with support but got jungle would be alright with it.
With the old first pick system everyone knew there was a real chance of having to play support but a lot of players accepted that and learned to play support and would sometimes even offer to take support when they were clearly not going to get their preferred position.
I chose to have support as my backup position for a reason and it rewarded me for doing so.
There was more communication in champ select with the first pick system and since positions are assigned now players tend to not talk as much.
First pick was a much better system for players with a preferred position and one or 2 positions they tried to avoid. As such more players who were alright with sometimes playing support would step up and agree to do it since there was no real punishment in having support as your secondary position.
There is still real punishment in having support as your secondary position with the select 2 positions system and this is why auto fill has become a thing.
Yes if the pick 2 positions system would be removed some players would be bitching but in the long run but the punishment of having support as your secondary position would be gone. This in turn would result in shorter queue times and more players being open to playing support sometimes because they would understand their preferred position would be taken but support would often be open.
The fact that the game did not die during 5 years of the first pick system shows that it was not really dysfunctional. It had down sides but removing those down sides caused other down sides. There is no way to have it be win win for everyone.
