The reason why mage players think they get walled by MR so hard is because they don't remember actually exists in the game. Flat pen doesn't kill tanks, and the same goes for ap champs. If they're buying a good deal of MR, get a Void Staff.

The real problem is that they removed Athene's as a viable option in most mids. If I'm playing Xerath, my only option for MR to survive lane is Abyssal, which absolutely sucks for him

You're telling me that Athene's, with its measly 25 magic resist, gave MR that was worth a damn? If anything, buying Athene's automatically put you behind. Hell, most people complained that people would point them towards that item when they were upset about mana issues in lane. That item was garbage and technically still is. Riot needs to follow up on that item.

That may have been the case in the past, but Void Staff now only increases magic penetration by 35%. Meaning you need to have some decent penetration before building one. Previously magic damage would ignore 35% of magi res, but not anymore I believe.

It's 35% TOTAL MR, not just bonus MR. So it's not 35% of someone's 60 MR purchase. It's 35% of someone's 100 MR total after that purchase.

Think of how much better that is than the Whisper items, where they ignore like 45% of BONUS armor, meaning the X amount of base armor is left untouched. Cleaver goes up to 30% total, but requires a stacking mechanic. Void Staff is 35% total magic pen out of the gate. There is NO reason to whine over it. Just build it.

It's not 35% of a target's MR. You're reading an outdated description for the item. Read what it says ingame. The item increases magi pen by 35%. It does not negate 35% of the target's MR. Riot did this to STOP mages from building void staff and then flat AP.

I never claimed to be bright? You sound like you have some insecurity issues. My objection to your original claim regarding the nature of Void Staff still stands. Whether or not it's better than LDR is irrelevant because the way you were describing it was wholly inaccurate.

Void Staff ignores 35% of the enemies Magic Resist. That's how it works, it does not increase your magic pen by 35%. You can even check this by pressing C when you're ingame with the item.

Theres 2 different pen values, the flat, which ignores flat resistances (better against squishies), and the %, which ignores percentage of resistance (better against tanks).

If you still for some reason think it increases the flat pen, read that it says (applies before magic penetration). I seriously do not know why you think Riot did that.
