Dr. Mundo PBE changes

I highly appreciate that Riot decided to do some work for our Zaunite madman, enhancing his niche as a counter for AP top laners. It seems that after the changes he will be pretty good against champions like Rumble, Singed or Teemo, since he gains MR when he suffers magic damage.

But I have a question: The costs for his W are changed from a flat health cost to dealing magic damage to himself every second. This cost is scaling with his AP and I don't really understand why. I know, Dr. Mundo isn't building AP usually, he is building tank and his AP scalings are not really good. But it still seems odd for me that a champion gets punished for building a specific stat.

So: Why does the cost have an AP ratio?

I'd imagine it's part of the whole massochist vibe. When he gets more damage into the fire around himself, it would naturally burn him more. It's like how they put a slow on rammus' w; it doesn't make a HUGE amount of sense from a gameplay standpoint, but thematically it does.

Rammus' and Urgots self slows are static, though.... If I am not mistaken, then Dr. Mundo is the first case of a champion getting directly punished for building a stat because he is harming himself more with it.

There could be an argument for champions with health costs, but relatively to their health pool, the costs are always static. Meanwhile if I would buy an AP item on Mundo after that change without health on it, I would directly harm myself by increasing the damage I take myself.

Maybe you are right and it is for thematic reasons. I still think that concept is kinda odd. But him having fireballs rotating around him doesn't make sense in the first place. I hope he gets that VGU as soon as possible. ^^
