Illaoi Skin Vote: Feedback

Chembaron Yamada·11/21/2017, 9:16:50 AM·56 votes·3,296 views

The results for the Illaoi skin vote are out and it turned out that Battlecast Illaoi was the winner.

Unfortunately, I see alot of negative feedback here in the boards, coming from people who voted for one of the other 2 options, which are frustrated now. While this is understandable, it's sad to see how people are reacting here.

Just like after the VS event, the voices of negative feedback are louder. People who are disappointed are more likely to come to the boards and vent over it than people who want to share how happy they are with the winner.

So I just want to point out: There are alot of people in the community who liked the whole event. It was great to be part of the skin development process and I look forward to the articles showing us how the skin is progressing.

I would be highly disappointed if this feedback would lead to Riot not doing such a vote in the future, just like I hope that Riot will continue the VS events in the future as well.

So please share your positive feedback about the event. Let's show Riot that we appreciate what they did for the community and that we would like to see that coming back.

Great job man. I am behind everything you said.

(hate me, but i really do like the concept-winner)

I really wanted Adventurer, and I was a tiny bit bummed when I saw this one won, but I'm not upset about it. I really liked this one too for the X-Men Days of Future Past feel, so I'm all for it. I just really wanted Indiana Jones Illaoi more.

I didn't vote for that one, but I support it. i liked all three, really, but I felt that the deep space one was the coolest! (I liked the black slimy tentacles).

In any case I like it when riot does votes like this. (Though it panned out for me last time Diana )

I voted for a different skin myself, but im okay with whatever skin they pick, simply because she needs more skins in general and the masses have spoken. i was only sad she didn't get a skin that was solely for her. but yay a new skin for tentacle lady!

Personally the skin isn't for me. Does that mean I hate this contest and never want one like it again? Does that mean I'll be mad over the winner?

No, don't take the wrong message from this Riot. Some people will dislike the results but that was bound to happen. It was fun and I'm looking forward to that Illaoi skin in a couple months.

I think it was great that Riot let us in on the decision making process. I certainly hope it will be done again in the future. That sad, the negativity could have been forseen. Riot gave players a taste of what-could-have-been; and when players don't get it there's obviously going to be salt.

I was sad when i saw the winner. I honestly don't like the Battlecast skin line (or any of the cyberpunk/machinery lines). So I was disappointed we were getting yet another mechanical skin. I'm also sad because this means Illaoi might not get another skin for another few years.

At this point I just feel like robotic skin themes are overdone (Battlecast, PROJECT, Mecha...)

Star themes are also overdone (Star Guardian, Cosmic, Dark Star...) but the Deep Space Illaoi skin was giving me Dead Space vibes + harkened back to AstroNautilus and Astronaut Teemo. (That's what I voted for and hoped would win)

Just my two cents.

Noblewind11/21/2017, 5:03:30 PM4 votes

Disappointed but haven't written about it until here. I personally thought the battlecast was the worst of the 3, I thought the deep space one looked amazing.

I was really happy to find out that the results of the Illaoi mains matched the overall vote though. It was cool that they showed that

Jkrexx11/21/2017, 10:13:29 AM3 votes

I've not complained and I appreciate the event. Unfortunately, for some reason, the worst skin out of the three (in my opinion) won the vote and people are just frustrated. Riot knows how this playerbase works by now so I doubt it'll put them off too much.

My initial reaction to when I saw the winner was “Wait Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!”

Quepha11/21/2017, 4:01:36 PM3 votes

Why would I give positive feedback about an event that only gave me disappointment?

I don't think Riot should do voting things in the future similar to this that determine content that players get, it's not a good idea.

Creating an environment where only positive feedback is allowed makes all the feedback worthless.

TwitchInMyPants11/21/2017, 7:46:51 PM3 votes

Honestly regardless of the winner its clear the design is tentative (likely going to change before release) and the fact they took community feedback for a champion that needed a skin is a good opportunity. They should do this more often.

The Nami Goddess11/21/2017, 7:50:35 PM3 votes

Personally, I only liked the adventurer skin. It was a cool new concept and imho the battlecast and space themes are horrifically overdone. But in the end, Illaoi is getting a new skin. I won't be buying it, I'll be sticking to void. But I did my part in trying to make something happen. I voted and that's all I could do. The fact is that I'm only one opinion. I can't expect for everyone to agree with me and I can't complain when people don't. And I'm definitely not going to be spamming the boards with BabyRage. It's not going to help anyone and it's not going to change anything

ahferroin711/21/2017, 9:59:50 PM3 votes

TBH, while I agree people are being jerks about this, the whole 'only one' thing makes it pretty easily understandable. All three skins were reasonably fleshed out (those were 3D renders, not just splash art, so they already had a significant percentage of the work done on all three), and they were all reasonably good skins (I didn't really like any of them, and would have preferred a Mecha or Project skin, but that's just me). Given that, I actually doubt Riot will just bin the other two, and would be willing to bet that they will be distinct possibilities next time Illaoi gets a non-event related skin (although the deep space one would probably make a cool Halloween skin). If that's the case, then Riot would be far better off stating that (IOW, 'Which one do you want first?' instead of 'Which one do you want?') from a PR perspective.

I am honestly annoyed that it wasnt deep space. Especially since every forum I go I would see deep space and even lol reddit had deep space on its banner. Guess I didnt take into account how many people werent on any forums and such.

On the skin note...I HATE the tentacle design. It has a hand on the end of it and it looks goofy as hell imo. Part of me wants to also put blame on the boob window and would like to see what would happen if they did a revote but removed the boob window cause I SWEAR it has something to do with it. I am also tired of all these fucking robot skins. It would be a bit better if she actually looked like a battlecast but she doesnt. This is more mad max meets cyberpunk and it was done in all the wrong ways. Nothing about the skin stood out. The outfit just doesnt say much other than my reality sucks and im trying to change a dieing world. Adventurer atleast coulda had a good story but the fact that it had the same colors as base killed it for most.

Deep space seemed the best because those tentacles would of looked sick with slamming them and watching them peel off the ground. The story could be expanded on by adding more to the skin line or adding it to the astro skin line and making them have an enemy. It was something done but I just felt they had alot more room to add their own flair onto it without too much expectation. With battlecast she has to look a certain way and sound a certain way to be a "battlecast skin". As an Illaoi main I am still going to buy the skin. But I will always have this disappointed feeling that she coulda been so much more.

Ahri Body Pillow11/21/2017, 11:16:55 PM3 votes

People are allowed to not be happy with the results, myself included. Battlecast is, quite frankly, an overdone theme. I understand the lore behind the skin, but the particles and colors have been done to death.

Additionally, Adventurer and Deep Space would have opened up the door for an entirely new skin line or expanded upon a current skin line with a small champ lineup.

IMO, the only bright side is the fact that Riot is at least looking into new skin lines or expanding Deep Space.

Just like after the VS event, the voices of negative feedback are louder. People who are disappointed are more likely to come to the boards and vent over it than people who want to share how happy they are with the winner.

Yes, which is why letting us vote on which skin we get is an awful idea, because people who really wanted that Astronaut skin will never get it and will be very resentful, whereas if Riot just made one of them into a skin, we would have been none the wiser to the other two options, and thus people would me much less dissatisfied. While to some people this is a great, magnificent idea, I wholly believe in the opposite. This idea breeds dissent and anger among those who voted, but lost, and even the people who won need to wait months before they finally get what they want.

Jaspers11/21/2017, 10:52:44 AM2 votes

As someone mentioned in a different thread, the Battlecast got the most votes but the other 2 got more votes than Battlecast so there will be more people disappointed than happy.

I'm fine with it but I personally would have liked the Deep Space because it would have stood out more. Her basic skin is green/pale blues, Void is purple, while Battlecast is just greys and it's hard to make great 'grey' skins.

Deep Space though, black tenticles clashing with the white of the space suit? Would have popped out colour wise.

But alas.

HalcyonDweller11/21/2017, 5:14:34 PM2 votes

Oi listen up. I only voted for something besides the battlecast skin because the tentacles were replaced with a robotic arm. If Riot puts the work into it and doesn't just make a robot arm then I have no problem with this being the skin.

I'm just going to be very disappointed if they replace the tentacle with a joint based limb. It's a tentacle not an arm, and as long as they don't fuck that up I'll be very excited to see the skin.

winteriscoming9711/21/2017, 7:17:02 PM2 votes

I don't play Illoai personally, it's just that we already have so many new robotic skins that recently came out and the other two would have added more variety. Although, a vote is a vote, I just expected people to follow similar reasonings

Noobinoob der II11/24/2017, 5:50:54 AM2 votes

The main problem was that there was a majority for one design but also a big interest in the other two designs. It wasnt that the other two got 2% and one got 98%. I don't like this winner takes all mentality. Its bad for this, politics and society.

I also think Battlecast is overdone and generic. But i can see why it has mass appeal. But instead of booting the other 2 designs. Why not make all three. Illaoi needs skins and all three catered to a different audience. I'm an Illaoi main, i didn't voted for BC. But i would have bought deep space and adventurer Illaoi both.

People seem to forget that final product and concept art are very different. If you think Battlecast Illaoi looks bad from the concept, don't judge too soon. Just look at Jhin's concept art vs. his final look. Dramatically different. The concept art is just a way to get some basic ideas out. Remember that it's shared its development with 2 other concepts, which are now being put aside.

I feel like they should just release all three, it'd put her skin count up there with echos, plus they literally just released to blitzcrank skins at the same time. I know he hasn't gotten a skin in awhile, but illaoi hasn't gotten a skins aside from her release. Aurelion sol and taliyah are in the same boat.
