"Mains"?

Why does anyone actually pick a "main" champion? I understand that lots of people keep a small champion pool and only play a handful of champions because they think they are really good with them. I have two issues with this. First off, you are really limiting yourself. In most cases these players haven't actually played most champions, so you don't even know if you might even be better as them. This also means that the chances are fairly good that you do not know the strengths and weaknesses of other champions unless you happen to have played against them often enough. Second, these are the people who cry, .. I don't mean complain, .. I mean pathetically, embarrassing, painful to watch crying about how their main is getting nurfed on the PBE or in the next patch. Why do they cry? Because this is the ONLY champion they feel good with. I almost have every champion in the game at this point, and I play them all fairly regularly. Most of the time when I want to just have a fun, relaxing game (oh and by the way, this is a game, you are supposed to relax and have fun) I literally just roll the random button 5 times and I play whoever it lands on, and in whatever role has not been called yet.

Also, I do understand that the term "main" is more commonly used for the champion that people most often play in ranked games, which are not really 'for fun' games. The point is, if you stop calling any one champion your "main" and you actually learn to play more than the minimum set of champions, you will see that when one champion is no longer the 'OP' there is probably another champion who is.

A lot of us do main a champion but also play plenty of others. I main Rek'sai but play plenty of other jungle champions.

To me main, is someone who you primarily play.

I used to main ahri. Now I play several other champions.

Basically main to me is just who you are currently playing the most. You can main more than 1. If you happen to main 1, then you are considered a 1 trick pony.

Most people pick a main because they find that champion fun for them, and they think the champion is good/viable. Youd be more likely to see an ahri main vs an urgot main. (Viability-wise)

Now, if you pick 10 different champions and try to master them vs picking 2 and trying to master those, youll see the difference.

Most "mains" arent mains, they just happen to play a lot of that champion.

To any1 considering "maining" 1 champion, consider adding 1 more. Usually 1 ap and 1 ad, for team balancing purposes.

I'd have to disagree with you on the "Youd be more likely to see an ahri main vs an urgot main. (Viability-wise)" It's less of a Viability-wise.. and more of a popularity-wise. Urgot is a sleeper op but no one plays him xD

Well I agree. I was wrong about viability. But urgot isnt top tier, otherwise youd see him in the LCS (like ahri).

Point is. People only play the broken stuff, and if everyone is broken, and everyone else is "average" the average champions seem weak.

I dont think urgot is OP, he is good against some people, but by no means "OP".

A true sleeper op is Ashe, but shes not mobile, so not really too good, as mobility and speed is pretty important for adcs nowadays.

I use to feel like you did. But the game becomes too frustrating that way. No one plays to enjoy themselves, and often times you're carrying some teenager who's throwing a tantrum.

Also, it's not just about knowing what champions do, it's largely about know how Champion A reacts to Champion B. You're at a disadvantage playing multiple champs because you don't how your champ should respond to theirs, even if you know what their champ does.

E.g. I main Maokai. Got matched against Olaf. I have never played Olaf, but I know how to deal with him in lane despite the fact he should counter me.

Because there's nearly always room for improvement. If you just play a bunch of random champs everyday you will never maximize your skill with these champs. Just because you main a champ does not mean you don't play other champs.

Just because you main a champion doesn't mean you don't know the strengths and weaknesses of other champions. Before it got removed, I used to play different champs in teambuilder. I think you confuse mains with one trick ponies. People main a champion because they're comfortable with how they play, what items to build, the matchups etc. Think of it less as limitation and more of a specialization. You may be fine personally with being a jack of all trades, but you're going to be mediocre at everything when you could be spectacular at a select few. It's the same way people pick a lane to play most of the time, they're comfortable there and can really take the time to dive into a particular playstyle

One trick Ahri here. 1.4m mastery with her. I play her because she's more fun than all of the other champions.

Wow, minus 6 lol. I'm really getting down there. I have actually seen the boards be a lot more forgiving recently, but I'm taking a beating.

Okay, right. I definitely understand that one people don't have and/or play only one champion. I do understand that isn't what "main" actually means. In fact, you are not even able to play PVP without having a certain number of champions owned, if I recall correctly.

When I am referring to "mains", I am referring to someone's attachment to that single character. It comes to a point where people feel so comfortable with that character that they will notice every little change, and yes, that is a good thing. My problem with this is that, in most cases, people will "main" a champion who is most often considered to be OP. Who tends to get nerfs? Champions who are mostly considered to be OP. Now that doesn't mean that you shouldn't play that champion. What I'm saying is, 1. Don't be surprised/throw a tantrum when they get nurfed, and 2. Expect that it is going to happen. Be less attached. Have more strength with other champions, I promise you, when one champion gets nurfed, it wont be long at all before another champion is considered to be OP.

People with true mains stick to their champion even when they are not in a good spot. i don't stop playing Riven after playing her since season 2 just because she goes through a season or two of being trash tier.

Even if I have other champions I play with sometimes, I never turn my back on my real main.
